Beyond Shame Audiobook Cover

All Noelle Cunningham has ever wanted is a life beyond – beyond the walls of Eden, where only the righteous are allowed to remain, and beyond her stiflingly restrictive existence as a councilman’s daughter. But only ruins lie outside the City, remnants of a society destroyed by solar storms decades earlier.

The sectors surrounding Eden house the corrupt, the criminal-men like Jasper McCray, bootlegger and cage fighter. Jas clawed his way up from nothing to stand at the right hand of Sector Four’s ruthless leader, and he’ll defend the O’Kane gang with his life. But no fight ever prepared him for the exiled City girl who falls at his feet.

Her innocence is undeniable, but so is their intense sexual attraction, and soon they’re crossing every boundary Noelle barely knew she had. But if she wants to belong to Jas, first she’ll have to open herself to the gang, and to a world where passion is power, and freedom is found in submission.

Beyond Shame

My Thoughts

Beyond Shame is the first book in the Beyond series by Kit Rocha (a.k.a. Moria Rogers, a.k.a. Donna Herren and Bree Bridges). This series takes place in a dystopian world after solar flares took all technology on the planet. Electricity is not stable either. Eden is supposed to be a utopia, but with all its rules and restrictions, it is far from it. That is where is find Noelle Cunningham, the councilman’s daughter, who was living outside of those regulations. She is kicked out of the city and dumped into Sector Four to fend for herself.

The sectors surrounding Eden are known for their corruption and crime. They are run by gangs and street rules apply. Each sector is known for different “specialities”. Sector Four is run by the infamous bootlegger Dallas O’Kane. He makes the best liquor in the area and makes tons of money at it. Sector Four is also known for its explicit extracurricular activities. Nothing is off limits as long as it is consensual.

When Noelle falls at the feet of Jasper McCray, right hand to the head of Sector Four. Jasper takes in Noelle who is on something and nurses her back to health. Jasper, even though he is a cage fighter and a thug, he has quite the soft spot and Noelle fits there perfect. They are perfect together. He is a natural dominant. Noelle is a natural submissive who wants nothing more than to experience life.

The characters in this book couldn’t be better. They are hot, tattooed and share well, for the most part. There are some pretty elaborate sex parties in the sector. The people in the gang are loyal, sarcastic and cocky. Once you are part of the O’Kanes, you are one for life. You are even tattooed with cuffs around your wrists to prove you are part of the gang for life. It also offers you extra protection in the sector. Everyone knows that if you mess with one O’Kane, you will mess with them all.

Beyond Shame Audiobook Narration

my review

The narration is good. Lucy Malone does a good job with each of the different characters. I don’t think she does a bad job with the men. She makes Noelle’s innocence sound believable. Each character has a distinct voice. The tone and pace is done well.

Kit Rocha_400x400Kit Rocha is the pseudonym for co-writing team Donna Herren and Bree Bridges. After penning dozens of paranormal novels, novellas and stories as Moira Rogers, they branched out into gritty, sexy dystopian romance.

Narrator Lucy MaloneLucy Malone has narrated dozens of audiobooks and is one of the most sought-after voices for erotica narration. A number of her titles are consistent bestsellers on Amazon and Audible, and she has been described as having “the best voice in the biz.”

  1. I loved the world building in this series, too. I just wish there had been less sex scenes, because I felt they took a lot from the actual plot. I had the same issue with the 2nd book. Still have to find the time to read the 3d one.

    • I love the world and the characters. All the books are very high in sex. I’ve read all of the books and novellas that have been published so far and the amount of sex doesn’t drop off, but I think the stories get better and better.

    • I love this series. I forget how I found it, but it is a wonderful series and is on my autobuy list. This first couple is one of my favorites. Nichole and Jasper are so cute together, we do get to continue to see them in books going forward. All of the characters are lovable in their own way.

  2. I’m not an easy sell when it comes to a high-sex series and I LOVE this one! What did you think of the narrator Loupe? I’ve been considering switching to audio on this series but I’ve had a lot of trouble with finding many female narrators to be grating to me. Karen White in particular and she’s narrator for a lot of books.

    • Personally, I liked this narrator. She does a lot of erotica books and fits well with this series. I thought she did a great job with the guys. I don’t mind female narrators, so I don’t know if this will work for you or not. The clip that we have is longer than the clip on Audible, so give it a listen and see what you think. I hope you like.

  3. This are the kinds of stories that challenged the feminist in me…LOL And not in a million years I’d have thought I would have liked it, but when the author drags you into the story and doesn’t let go you can’t help to see it to the end and be surprised by the level of your enjoyment. I can’t even imagine watching Lucy Malone reading some of these scenes!
    Great review Melanie!

    • Thanks. I’ll admit, I’ve never had issues with sex in a story, as long as it isn’t absurd. Sometimes I will skim if it is poorly written or if the scene sounds like something Gumby couldn’t perform. I’m all about a good story. Sometimes sex makes them better, sometimes worse. In this case, it makes the stories better, at least in my opinion.

    • I know it bothers many people. It has never bothered me, though I think this first true erotica that I’ve listened to. Many of the PNR and UF books have some pretty hot scenes, the erotica just has more of them.

  4. Okay, I want and need this in my life. Sounds like I would love it. Great review!!

  5. Not so sure I would enjoy this as much as you did. But I’ve heard a ton about Beyond Shame! Maybe someday I’ll have the courage to buy it. :]

  6. I haven’t read any of Kit’s books but this sounds like my kind of read! I’m always on the look out for some new hot book boyfriends and by your review it sounds like these books are full of them, thanks for sharing Melanie πŸ˜‰

  7. Will you be reading book 2? I love the concept of this series but it needs more plot for my taste. It felt like a virginal princess let loose in an orgy fest LoL. Ill await your feedback for the second one.

    • I’ve read all the books that have been published so far. I’ve listened to books one and two. We will be posting the review for book two in the future. I own books three and four on audio, but haven’t listened yet. Lex is the heroine of the next story, who is so not a virgin. I’m pretty sure that Noelle is the only virgin in the series, if I remember correctly.

  8. Dystopian Erotica? Now that isnt something I have read before. Well, I don’t read much erotica, not my cuppa. Still I am curious because I like dystopian. Unfortunately, I dont think I can listen to this one as I do alot of my listening in the car while driving my kids around and when there are sex scenes I have to turn it down πŸ™‚

    • The ebook is free right now (don’t know for how long), if you want to give it a try reading. I know a lot of people don’t like to listen to erotica, and I understand. I listen in a car by myself or with earbuds in, so no one knows what I’m listening to.

  9. I didn’t realize that dystopian erotica was a thing… And, I love how you described the characters as being ‘hot, tattooed and share well.’ LOL! Sex parties aren’t really my thing, especially in audio, but I am happy that as a listener of this genre, this story was such a hit with you.

    • I read the series before I started listening. I love it. They write such great characters. I can’t get enough of this series. I read the books and then get the audios when they come out. They never release on the same day.

  10. Dystopian Erotica in audiobook, maybe I just found a new walking partner lol. I still need to try audio, and never thought of something beyond YA or the Darynda Jones series which I hear is awesome. I’m glad this series on audio as much as the written. Great review!

    • Thanks. I’ve really enjoyed this narrator. I need to get to listening to books three and four (both of which I’ve read). I hope you enjoy. This one is at a great price right now, if you go to Amazon and get the kindle version free, the Audible version is only $2.99, but I don’t know for how long the Kindle version will be free.
