Fever series, book 7

13 hours and 9 mins

Genre: Urban Fantay

It’s easy to walk away from lies. Power is another thing.

MacKayla Lane would do anything to save the home she loves. A gifted sidhe-seer, she’s already fought and defeated the deadly Sinsar Dubh—an ancient book of terrible evil—yet its hold on her has never been stronger.

When the wall that protected humans from the seductive, insatiable Fae was destroyed on Halloween, long-imprisoned immortals ravaged the planet. Now Dublin is a war zone with factions battling for control. As the city heats up and the ice left by the Hoar Frost King melts, tempers flare, passions run red-hot, and dangerous lines get crossed.

Seelie and Unseelie vie for power against nine ancient immortals who have governed Dublin for millennia; a rival band of sidhe-seers invades the city, determined to claim it for their own; Mac’s former protégé and best friend, Dani “Mega” O’Malley, is now her fierce enemy; and even more urgent, Highland druid Christian MacKeltar has been captured by the Crimson Hag and is being driven deeper into Unseelie madness with each passing day. The only one Mac can depend on is the powerful, dangerous immortal Jericho Barrons, but even their fiery bond is tested by betrayal.

It’s a world where staying alive is a constant struggle, the line between good and evil gets blurred, and every alliance comes at a price. In an epic battle against dark forces, Mac must decide who she can trust, and what her survival is ultimately worth

Burned

I’m a colossal fan of this series, and listening to Burned made me feel like I had been lost wandering aimlessly around through the literary world for the past two years and I finally came home.

I freaking loved being back!!! Just being back and having my wheels turning once again made me forget the long wait. Lost in a world of mystery and suspense where the surprises never give you time to settle  is once again plain awesome and addictive….Within a few minutes, I felt like I never left and never wanting to leave again.

After I heard Mrs. Moning was making this story about Mac, I couldn’t help to think, what else is there to say about Mac & Jericho? I didn’t think their story could successfully continue without having to ruin their HEA…I was wrong…So wrong.

The Fever world continues to be an amazing blend of darkness, mystery, testosterone and an incredible sensuality that coats the suspense and danger of its stories.

The story takes off with a super HOT introduction from Barron’s point of view, and it makes it clear from the get-go that this world is no child’s play.
If you bought the audio clip from Mrs. Moning’s website a few years back, you would know what I’m talking about.

The first few minutes of this audiobook move the story into to a higher level of sensuality. This time is sexier, edgier with a more direct approach to its adult content than any of the previews installments. I for one, loved it!

We get more than one point of view to let us spend time with Dani, Barrons, The Unseelie King, Christian, Kat and of course Mac.

Here are few things I absolutely loved about Burned

1- The way the author manipulated the plot to deliver Mac’s voyeuristic point of view….Brilliant!

2- The clever twist that delivers us a new Dani…Or maybe an old Dani that’s always been there, but we failed to notice.

3- The way some old scores get settled…Yeah! Heads will roll!!

4- The way Barrons continues to be the sexiest men in fiction (yeah, my feelings..LOL)

5- The way Ryodan is almost the sexiest men in fiction and continues to be a bad-ass that leaves you no doubt he’s no one to mess with, and  not being sure what’s behind some of his actions,  have me the most curious.

6- The way in which the author continues to bring our favorite Highlanders to the Fever world. Oh Christian! I’m so glad he has some pretty strong allies.

7- The unique writing style that weaves strong human emotions to deliver  authentic and relatable characters that despite its fantasy setting never fail to transport your heart and mind to the setting.

Best of all!

The way in which I was once again left looking for clues and hints of what’s coming next and the motivations behind some of the character’s actions.
A lot more mysteries to unravel and theories to be made….
Yup! Once again, Mrs. Moning have left me wanting more.

Nothing new here, but exactly what I expected and knew only Karen Marie Moning could deliver.

Warning: The story takes off pretty much where ICED left off. I highly recommend reading/listening to that installment to get the best experience out of BURNED.

Burned Audiobook Narration

Phil
Yellow earphones

To hear Phil Gigante utter those two words, Miss Lane, is just phenomenal!

Not in million years I could imagine a better interpretation for these dark, mysterious and all around sexy males than Phil Gigante’s. I know he moves these novels up a notch for me every time.

His approach to Barrons, Ryodan, Christian and the rest the MacKeltars (every male character for that matter) is impeccable. Way to convey their darkness, authority and sex appeal..OH MY!

His Scottish accents are magnificent! The different tone and voice for each character are always right on. It’s not easy to convey a face expression just by one’s voice, but Phil manages to do that every time..BRAVO! If you’re already a fan, you know what I mean. And if not, you’ll be one soon.

Fever is a world full of testosterone, and Phil never lets you forget that. Don’t let me forget his voicing of some the unseelie creatures…..He’ll make your skin crawl.

And most important, he takes you to Dublin, every time.

I loved his performance!

Natalie
Yellow earphones

Natalie Ross was not left behind in this duo.
She also does a great job with all the female voices. I had a little problem in Iced when it came to figuring out who was talking beside Mac…Not here. This wasn’t an easy job. We have Kat, Joe, Dany, Jada… just to mention a few. I know, you’ll meet Jada..soon! I always knew who was talking.
Natalie is the narrator of the story for the biggest part of the novel. The responsibility of the pace and the major interpretation of the story falls on her shoulders. Once again she skillfully brings you to Fever world. She easily lets you experience the mood of the novel by conveying the urgency of some of the scenes.
As usual, she’s right on with Mac.

All in all, I love both performances. They truly complement each other to brings us another great episode in the Fever world.

  1. I didn’t like Iced and wasn’t planning to read this one… I know!! But after reading your review… I NEED this book!!
You sold this book to me darling. Awesome review!

    • If you didn’t like Iced than you might enjoy this one better, I seen a lot disappointed peeps b/c there wasn’t enough Dani. On other love Iced, and here I loved just being back in the Feverworld.
So I can only hope you have the same experience, the narrators always take this books up a notch for me..LOVE THEM.

  2. I loved Iced and have been waiting impatiently for Burned – I’m glad to see it’s lived up to the hype. I pre-ordered the signed hardback but I don’t know how long it’s going to take to get here…I want it NOW!!!

    Great review!

    • Thank you Patti. I seen a lot peeps that love Iced not enjoying this one much…They not liking the change on Dani, which I did b/c I feel it sets up the story for something bigger, but I really don’t know what direction she’s going with her character…I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

  3. I don’t like Mac (this has always a series I have liked in spite of the lead character) so it is going to be interesting to see if I am going to like this. I like Dani so if that character is ruined I will probably not continue. I don’t want her to be a villain and I have a feeling that is what KMM is doing. I am listening today so we will see.

    • I can see why this is not turning out to be a winner for you. With Mac narrating the majority of the book I don’t think it could stand a chance with you…lol
I on the other hand like the change for Dani, it opens the plot for a lot possibilities, some that I can totally see you might not be happy with 🙁

  4. I’m reading this right now, Loupe, but the male narrator sounds like I’d really enjoy him, and I love listening to British and Scottish accents 😀 I am pretty sure hearing the very first part in a male voice would make me shiver all over…
Great review! I am adding this audio to my wish-list 😀

    • The narration always is a winner for me Lexxie, I’m not lying when I say the minute I press play I get lost in their world and I always love being there. I get that stupid grin of my face…You know what I’m talking about..lol

    • This is fantastic series Brandi, and I couldn’t recommend it on audio enough. I’ve loved every audio experience from this series, and Burned wasn’t the exception. I hope you decide to give the series a shot 🙂

  5. Ok so I glanced over your review because I want to enjoy every page of this book with no spoilers…LOL (not that you post them, but when it comes to this and the BDB books I want no clues!) I honestly thought this book would continue Dani’s story solely with just a mention of Mac and Barrons and was surprised when it became another “Fever” book. Either way I can’t wait to listen to this one thanks to you and get my fix of Barrons and Ryo! 😉

    • You know, I wasn’t expecting much. When I heard that is was about Mac & Barrons I though, they are done! I don’t want to see them broken up or anything like that, and I thought the world wouldn’t be interesting to me, but, no… The minute I got back into their world I love being there.. I hope you like the narrators, and that they move the story up a notch like they do for me 🙂

  6. Fantastic review! I am so happy about where she took the series. I think heads will be blown to pieces with the plots advancements. KMM def knows how to keep her readers on her toes!

    • Thanks Annie! That’s what I thought too. I really want to see where everything is going, I love the characters to pieces 🙂

  7. LOL Loupe, tell us how you really feel 😉
What a great review. I can’t wait to read it, but first I have to read Iced, yeah I know. But wow is there ever enough time to read all the books we want. And I’m definitely there with you on Jericho like I said in my post yesterday you nailed how I feel about this series.
    Thanks

    • I love this series Debbie! You can tell…LOL I can’t wait to hear your thoughts about Iced. There was a lot people mad, but I loved the one too. I can’t get enough..lol

  8. At last this audio is in my hands. I am jealous you have already listened to it! I can’t wait to jump back into this world. So happy Mac and Barrons are back. I love both narrators for this series. Five freaking stars! Now we have to wait a couple of more years until the next one…..

    • I hope not Heidi! I heard the next one will be out this October and that this was supposed to be one long book and publisher decided to do 2 books out of it.. I don’t know how true that is, you know how many rumors we hear, but in a way I hope is true so we don’t have to wait long.

  9. This series has been on my to read list forever and maybe I need to go with the audio version…eep!

    • Yes, I vote for the audio! God! I hope you get to live the same ride I had! 🙂

  10. Mine should be here Thursday, but after reading this review, I think I should have splurged on one day shipping! I cannot wait to read it 🙂 AHHHH BARRONS

    • You probably read it by now, and you know if which category you fell-loved -hated
I’ve loved every book, and is not very often that I play re-play when I finish an audiobook, but damn if I don’t do it every time with her books 🙂

  11. YES! *picks self off floor after fainting* I’m so excited for Burned, and I’m not sure now if I should go audio now. Your convincing me with the voices of our guys being so well done. Maybe both? I’m suppose to get my copy today, but the audio sounds like nothing I’ve heard before and need to 🙂

Thanks for making me drool … on my keyboard *wipes clean*

    • I LOVE the audios, especially since Dreamfever. Phil is phenomenal!! I hope you love it, but it seems there a lot angry people for not following through with Iced, which I loved by the way,
The narration always move this books up notch for me 🙂

  12. Fantastic review! I wasn’t excited for this release as Iced left me cold and Dani isn’t a favorite. Thanks for the clip, too. Phil Gigante….*sigh*

    • Exactly! I love Phil! And I love listening to this one! I did love Iced. To be honest, I’ve love every book and I really excited about how all this is gonna play out. I had very low expectations b/c I didn’t think I’d like the world any more if we went back to Mac & Barrons, but their relationship is not the main focus of the book so I loved being back.

  13. I am still behind in this series as I still have to read the last fever book but I am sure marking this down as an audio must read. 🙂

    • I love, love this series on audio! I highly recommend them in that format. The narration is top notch and it always enhance my experience of the book 🙂

      • You and others talking about Burned has me running to audibles..found Shadowfever for only 3.99 and with my $10 coupon I can get it and Iced for only $1.99!! See what you did..you should be proud of yourself..lol. 🙂

        • That’s a great price! Yay! I hope you love them as much as I did Stormi 🙂

  14. I love your excitement for this series. I’ll probably give it a go one of these days. Great review Loupe!

    • Like I said, I’m colossal fan, and I love the world and its character…Audio is the way to go Sharonda 🙂

  15. Maybe someday I’ll read (or more likely listen to) this series. I hear it is (mostly) amazing!

    • It’s is an amazing series, I mostly love it because of the mysteries and of course the crazy hot alpha males..but mostly Barrons…LOL
I highly recommend the audios, and to stick with it even if the first book don’t blow you away 🙂

  16. My friend was just talking about these books the other week. I believe she’s meeting the author this weekend actually.

Glad you loved this and it surprised you too!

    • I went to the signing for the last book, Iced, and also the one before that..You can tell I’m a big fan 🙂
      I did! Thank you!

  17. Well that’s good to hear. I have someone in a book club who was pretty dang livid over this one and not happy with KMM. Glad to hear it worked for you. I do enjoy her books. I just need to get myself caught up. I still have Iced on my shelf waiting for me. Too many books! lol

    • I know, it’s so hard to keep up! There’s a lot people mad, but there was a lot people mad with last book…I love that one too..LOL I love being in this world 🙂

  18. I respectfully disagree. Nothing new going on with Mac & Barrons. Their little tift was beyond silly. She is mad he hid her memories less than 48 hours after meeting her. He has done way worse, haha

Dani was missed and “Jada” is not all that interesting, I am glad Dani aged in the silvers because that needed to happen, but seriously….now we have to see Dani through this dual personality.

I think KMM let Iced negative reviews get to her…because this felt too forced.

    • I LOVED Iced too! That was 5 star listen for me, and I clearly remember a lot people mad. I’ve loved every book. I’m a big fan of her world, and the narration of these books just makes them great to me. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it like I did. I can totally understand disappointment, I’ve been there many of times myself, but not this time.

  19. Sold! I just need to read Iced and then I’m here.

Awesome, excited book lover review, Loupe!

    • Fans were very divided with Iced, I loved it, and I love this one, but maybe you should wait until the next and don’t suffer cliffhangers. The audios are awesome! At least not until the next one..lol
I love this world! Can you tell 🙂

  20. Oh my, oh my! Guess who just started Darkfever last night…this girl! I’m finally meeting Mac & Jericho! After reading your review of Burned, I can’t wait to go through the series now!

    • Oh Grace! I hope you like it, b/c if you do, you’re in for quite a ride 🙂 Not a lot romance, but the sexual tension get to be phenomenal!
      Yay!!

  21. I can finally read this review!

I love your quip about Ryodan, LOL, man I would like to have a quick romp with one of the Nine! I loved Burned but not with the same intensity as Iced. I feel kinda weird about it actually LOL. Still I will never abandon this series! It’s going to be another long wait!

    • I really enjoyed it Briane, I loved being back! I love her world and the gang. I know there’s a lot angry peeps out there, but there were a lot a lot angry peeps with Iced. So since the first 5 original books got published the reactions have been split, angry and not uniformed. Your rating is about right for me if I’ve read it, but the narration of these books always put the extra star on my experience 🙂
      I can’t wait for October!

  22. I just finished Burned late last night, so I held off reading your review until now. I listened to Iced, but this was the first time I got to experience Mac & Barrons in audio, and that in itself was a real treat. The story on the other hand… not so much. I didn’t have a problem with Dani’s age in the previous installment, and felt like this book was to appease the readers that did. KMM didn’t get to write the novel she’d originally intended which was disappointing. And, I found a lot of the threads entirely too convenient. I’m going to go write my review now before this turns into a long ranty comment. LOL! I’m psyched that you LOVED it, I just wish that I was in the same boat.

    • I didn’t have a problem with Dani on Iced either, that was a 5 star listen for me even when most peeps were hating it and the 2 and 1 stars were rolling in.
I was really afraid this was going to be a let down for me like it was for you, but nope, within in a few minutes a was lost in the world once again.
Sorry it didn’t work for you 🙁 I know how that feels, it sucks! I was left anticipating the next book and wanting to know where everything is heading, and I love that! Of course the narration always move these novels up a notch for me…I freaking love their interpretation.
I can only hope we’re in the same page after we listen to the next one…Happiness, just as misery does, love company.

  23. I plan to start this series soon. I’m just glad I won’t have to wait years between books! I guess being a slacker was good for something. 😀

    • Yes it was!! B/c I never suffered in my life the way I did after I read book 4…lol
It’s a great ride Christy. You just have to manage to like the first book enough to continue. The males here are not very nice..lol, but they are HOT!
I really enjoy the mystery and the guessing in her books.

  24. I still haven’t gotten to this series yet. *ducks out of here*

    • I know you’re not big fan of UF with no romance, but the sexual tension and the romance undercurrent we get is phenomenal. I hope one day you decide to give it go 🙂

  25. I LOVED Burned! There was so much going on and Moning opened up so many storylines! I can’t wait to see where everything goes next!

    • YAY! I’m glad you enjoy it Megan 🙂 That’s exactly one of the reasons I love being back, so many things to be answered…I’m looking forward to all them!
