My review

This is one of my favorite Paranormal Romance series, especially on audio. I love the mix of action, snark and sexiness that Kresley Cole brings to the stories. Add in Robert Petkoff’s narration and you can’t help but make any book from the Immortals After Dark series an autobuy on release day for me. While I will admit that some stories are better than others, this one wasn’t extremely high on my want list (for a IAD book, it was still high overall). I like the Lycae the best and I have to say Lothaire is one of my favorite stories in the series. Not sure how much of that is the story and how much of that is listening to Petkoff’s accents. I will say that once I got into this book, I enjoyed it way more than I thought.

Lanthe and Thronos have known each other since they were children. They were best friends even as their species are mortal enemies. However, due to some miscommunication and things that were done, they had 500 years of hatred for each other. Thronos, though, feels the pull of his fated mate and seeks Lanthe out even though he can’t stand her. He even gets himself caught by the Order to be with her.

As with all Immortal After Dark books, the timeline of this story somewhat overlaps with previous books. It starts with Lanthe and Thronos breaking out of the Order run prison, which we’ve seen the last few books. Lanthe is trying to escape with Carrow and Ruby, but Thronos drags her off in a different direction. Then the pair go on an Odyssey type adventure through worlds. As they try to survive these unknown worlds and perils, they learn that things about the past are not all as they seemed. As they overcome their differences, they learn that they were good together, just like when they were kids.

There is a lot happening with the overall story arc of the series. Cole also brings many of the characters and smaller story arcs back into the overall story, including the Dacians. There are some major spoilers that come out in this story. Not sure how many more books are in the series, but I’m starting to think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel of this story arc. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next and who the next couple will be. I have some ideas, but I’m not sure at this time.

As always, Robert Petkoff knocks it out of the park with the narration. While this one doesn’t have accents that I love, he is still amazing as he pulls of the different personalities of the characters. He does such a great job with the large number of female characters, especially showing their attitude. He really puts emotion in all the characters. He really makes the sexual scenes so realistic, I have to watch the volume in my earbuds at work.

  1. As you know, I’m a huge fan of this series, and I have loved every Audiobook these two artist have put out, and this one wasn’t the exception, I loved it! I love listening to this muticast production performed by Robert Petkoff. When I’m listening to these books I feel like I’m in the movie theater and I have a front road seat 🙂 – That men is just awesome!
    Great review girl 🙂

    • I know, I think I could listen to Petkoff read the dictionary. Everything I’ve read by Cole has been wonderful. I haven’t tried her YA series yet, but I will at some point.

  2. I know, I know… You, and Jennifer, and Loupe have been on my case to pick-up this series. BUT, I did recently start listening to my first Kresley Cole audio, so that has to count for something, right? I will get to it eventually, I swear! Especially seeing how it’s one of your fav PNR series, but 14 installments? URGH! At least it’s still going strong after so many books, that’s definitely a good sign. Fab review as usual, Melanie!

    • Thanks Carmel. Have I mentioned sexy Scottish werewolves recently? Petkoff does a great Scottish accent. 🙂

      • Haha It’s been at least I couple of weeks I’d say. 😉

  3. Why Have I never touched this series, I must be living under a rock, oh wait, no it’s because I have so many fleeping books to read. LOL
great review!! I think this will have to go higher on my wish list

    • I hope that it does. I love this series. Not only one of my favorite narrators, but one of my favorite secondary characters in Nucking Futs Nix, the Everknowing. She is a several thousand year old crazy Valkyrie that can see the future and is meddling with it and the people around her. Tons of fun. I hope you enjoy.

  4. I can’t remember which ones I have read in this series, a few and I liked them all so I really should read more

    • This is one of my favorite PNR series. I highly recommend it. It is a re-read (or my case re-listen) frequently series. I hope you enjoy.

  5. I have no idea who these people are because I haven’t read her series and I don’t think I’ll be going to anytime soon since it’s a LOT, but it’s great that it’s still going strong!

    • It is still going strong, though I don’t know how many more books there will be. I don’t know anything official, but the story arc seems to be wrapping up IMO. That, and she is running out of characters to pair up. LOL. I hope you get a chance to try soon, it is well worth it. All the stories are great. I think my lowest rating was 3.5 stars and that was a novella.

  6. I’m behind on the series, but this one is on my TBR 🙂

    • It is another good one. There is a ton going on with the overall story arc.

  7. Gah. I need to read this series. I got the first one … or maybe it’s a prequel, so I just jump on it soon.

    • The prequel isn’t my favorite (though it isn’t bad), but I love book one. I hope you get a chance to try too.

  8. This series sounds great, gads 14 books and it looks like they should be read in order. I do like how intense it sounds. I think I will add this to books I listen to on audio.

    • They are great on audio. I highly recommend audio over reading since you do audio. The narrator is one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy.

  9. I’m listening to this one right now! I’m enjoying the story quite a bit. Whew these two have some issues! The narration is a bit of a struggle for me. I think really I’m just not an audio girl :/

    • “Having some issues” is really an understatement. It is a great story. Petkoff is one of my top narrators, though this one doesn’t have the accents, which I love. The books with the Lycae are my favorite.

  10. Can’t wait, can’t wait!! As soon as The Hollows read-a-long wraps up, I am back to my reread of this series. I felt like such a dolt–it’s been so long since I read the series that I forget Lanthe was Sabine’s sister. *headdesk* Great review, Melanie! I’m SO glad it was awesome 😉

    • It was great. I want to do a re-read (or rather a re-listen) of this series too. I want to do one for The Hollows and Kate Daniels as well. I need more time in the day. LOL

  11. Nix is awesome in this. I love that she hasn’t had her own book but she’s such a huge presence in this series. The way she fixes up people cracks me up 🙂

    • She is great. I can’t wait to see where Cole is taking her. There is definitely a plan there.

  12. I actually READ this one. My first time reading and Cole is awesome even in print. LOL

I am of course going to listen to the audio as well since Petkoff is a narrator GOD. I can’t wait to hear his for voice for Thronos. Especially since he has no real accent in the book.

    • I started off reading before they were putting these on audio, but have gone back and listened to each and every one. So worth it. I did miss the lack of accents in this one. Still Petkoff was great.

  13. Yet another reminder of why I seriously need to read this series (and Cole in general)! I plan to listen when I get around to it, but it’s just so intimidating to think I have 14 books to catch up on. I skimmed your review, seeing as I don’t want to spoil anything, but I’m thrilled to see it’s book 14 and you’re still loving it.

    • They’re generally pretty quick reads if that helps. I highly recommend listening to these. Petkoff is one of my top three favorite narrators and really brings the characters to life. He does great Scottish and Russian accents, other too, those are just my favorite. He also really brings out the snarkiness of all the characters, even the women. Can’t say enough good things about these audiobooks.

  14. Great review, Melanie, and thanks for sharing a sound sample! I really enjoy the narrator’s voice and that’s really important for audiobooks.
I enjoyed this story a lot, too, and the fact that our couple had felt like enemies for so long made it even sweeter in the end 🙂

    • Thanks. Narrators can make or break a story. Petkoff is great for this series. His ability to do the different accents and add the snarkiness of the characters is amazing. I hope you have a chance to give him a try sometime.

  15. This is a series I’ve been wanting to read for a while, but haven’t found the time to do it. I’m not sure I’ll listen to the audiobooks, I don’t enjoy paranormal romances on audio… but I’m very curious about Robert Petkoff. I will check Audible to see which other books he has narrated.

    • I’m sure you will enjoy this series. I also think you would anything Robert Petkoff narrated.

  16. I’ve just finished “Warlord wants forever”, I’m glad to know that book #14 in the series is still that good 😉

    • Like with any series, some books are better than others and many people have different opinions about which are the better ones. As a whole the series is great. I don’t think I’ve ever rated a book in this series below three and half stars. I hope you enjoy as much I as have.

  17. I’m listening to this one still. I’m trying it out for when I’m cleaning but haven’t gotten quite the right set up yet. I need a way to make my phone louder because dang over the cleaning noise I’m doing a lot of rewinding. It is such a great series though. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂

    • I used the big headphones that cover my ears for mowing, vacuuming and anything else that is loud. Glad you are enjoying.

      • I was trying to hook the phone to the kitchen stereo but the connector thing didn’t go as I was hoping and went the other direction so no sound happened. Like I’d plugged head phones into the stereo instead of it channeling the book and being able to up the volume through it. Ahhhh. I’ll figure it out. I’m so uncoordinated I’d totally get myself all tangled in cords for the head phones I’m betting but I might have to give it a go. Would make moping SO much more enjoyable I’m sure 🙂

  18. You know I thought I commented, lols. Anyways, I love k. coles IAD series. I still need to read Lothaire, thank goodness I have it in paperback. I do love this voice here. Great review Melanie

    • Thanks. This is one of my favorite series and I loved Lothaire. I hope you enjoy.

  19. My friend raves about this narrator! I havent read or heard any of these books yet but I hear such greats things.

    • He is one of my favorite narrators. Recently, I picked up a book just because he was the narrator. While I enjoyed the story, I don’t know if I would have enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed listening. I hope you get a chance to try soon.
