When this series first started, I really enjoyed it.  We had a small town cop who also summoned demons.  It was a great story and the author’s background as a former cop and morgue tech really added a lot to the story.  The past couple books in this series, we have gotten away from the cop aspect of the story, as the main character, Kara, has spent most of her time in the demon realm.  As the investigations was some of my favorite parts of this series, I really missed that in the last book and feel that it was lacking in this one as well.  There is a small short scene where she is now a “civilian consultant” for the FBI, but it really just a side note to the story.

I also have a hard time with the her relationship with Mzatal in this book.  After what Rhyzkahl did to her in the last book, how could she put so much trust another demonic lord so quickly.  There are a ton of revelations that take place in this book that I can’t comment on without giving away spoilers.  I think this book could’ve been shorter.  It is probably the longest book in the series to date and it is a little slow in places which makes it hard to keep going.  I will continue with this series to see where it goes, but hope that the next book picks up the pace.

This is the first time I’ve listened to a book in this series without reading it first.  I’ve done a re-read/listen to book one last year with the intention of doing the entire series before this book came out, but just ran out of time.  I really liked the narration.  She really brings the characters to life, and there are many characters, several of which are not humanoid.  She does a great job bringing forth the arrogance of the demonic lords, the emotions of the humans and the weirdness of some of the other demons.  I will probably stick with listening to this series going forward.

  1. I’m listening to Rowland’s White Trash Zombie series right now, and am absolutely loving it! I may have to give this one a try too, although, the covers look like it might be a little too sci-fi for me. Sorry to hear that you haven’t enjoyed the recent installments as much, it’s hard to make the 6th book just as good as the first unfortunately.

    • Even though I started with this series from Diana Rowland, I’ve always liked the White Trash Zombie books more than the Demon books. There is just that little hint of humor that really made the books more fun.

The beginning of this series is very UF, think early Anita Blake with demons instead of vampires. As with the Anita Blake series, this series has traveled far from it’s original plot line (I know that will turn a lot of people off and I hope that it won’t. I still read Anita Blake, though I don’t enjoy it as much as I used to, 3-4 stars as opposed to 5). There is pretty much no police work anymore, it is all demonic politics. I don’t hate the story line, I just miss the old police work. This book in particular, seemed to have a lot of filler story that could have been left out in my opinion.

    • I would give it a try. I think that this book might just be a lull in the series and that it will pick back up. I’ve also seen where other bloggers, who I hold in high regard, have given it five stars, so it might just be me. This one does have some humor to it, but not as much as the the zombie series. This one is heavier on the romance than the zombie series (or maybe just the sex).

  2. Since my favorite UF series (The Hollows) will be ending soon, I’ve been searching for a new one that could fill the void, so I love discovering ones like this.

    • If you like Rachel, you’ll enjoy Kara. They are very similar as characters. The plot lines are very different, but still very good.

    • I love this series so much, I hope that the next one picks back up. I can’t remember how many more are left in this series, but I don’t think there are many left. I’m thinking one or two, but don’t quote me on that. 🙂
