In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. My Thoughts

Magic Bites Audiobook was first released on 2007, and I only had the fortune to have discovered it just a few months ago, and oh boy!! I’m so glad I did!.

Magic Bites is the first entry to the Kate Denials series that contains at the moment 5 installments, with book number 5,  Magic Slays just recently released.

I’m  at awe at the incredible amount of imagination the has gone into creating this fantastic, creepy, magical, unique, crude and sometimes gory universe, this is the kind a book that grabs you by your throat and refuses to let go until your done with the book.

I found it fantastic the way the authors (husband-wife team) manage to walk a delicate line between the urban fantasy genre and horror, as for me I’m going to put this book firmly on the urban fantasy category.

When Kate Daniels finds out that her guardian Greg Feldman is dead, she sets off on a  quest to find his murderer.  By the references given by Kate of his character, I was sorry that we didn’t get to meet him. But there are plenty of other characters to meet.

Kate forms uneasy alliances with shape shifters, and members of the Order who may or may not prove helpful in finding who’s behind Greg’s death. She will navagate a dangerouss world, andwhile she’s desparate to find a place where she can belong, it won’t prove easy to find it.

The character development was perfectly and flawlessly executed, by the end of this book you feel completely and orderly invested in this world and its characters.

I love the insinuation of romance, the underline feeling that hints to a wild ride full sexual tension, (just my cup of tea).

I love Kate Daniels! She has made the list of my favorite female leads along with Claire from the Outlander and Mercy from the Mercedes Thompson series, and if a first you find her not so likable, just give her a chance you won’t be disappointed.

Kate is strong, mysterious, outspoken (some might say, a bit mouthy). I love her sense of humor, mostly displayed in her sarcastic inner monologue, I found her sense of loneliness gave her the vulnerability that made her relatable and real.

Next to Kate herself, Curran  ‘the Lord of the Beasts ‘ is one the most appealing, fascinating and sexy characters in the story, this is only the first book, but even at this point I found Curran’s character worthy of  consideration to rival  my favorite bad boy,  Jericho Barrons, from the Fever series ( another must listen).

As is usual in a series the first book never makes it to the 5 stars category, but I can assure you, this series only gets better and better.

This is not for the squeamish or light hearted, we do get some gory scenes and a dark paranormal mystery, but all the loose ends are nicely tied up and in the end leaves you very satisfied with its conclusion.

Magic Bites Audiobook Narration

This was a well executed reading for Renée Raudman. She got Kate’s personality from the beginning, I don’t know if the fact that I never read the book before I listened to it influenced my judgment. I started listening with no preconceived notion of what the characters should sound like, and here, they sound perfect to me.

I’m not new to Renee’s work, she also narrates a few of my favorite audiobooks like, Blueye Devil by Lisa Kleypas and Passion Unleashed by Larissa Ione, taking this in consideration I can really appreciate her talent, these are all very different stories and I can very distinctively feel the divergence of the characters, and in the different tone of the stories.

Raudman does an impressive job at conveying the darkness, suspense and mystery of this novel; her male voices were distinctive and well performed.

The use of the creepy factor for some of the not so savory characters was the  best.

All and all, this was a very good narration, and  I highly recommend the Magic Bites audiobook to all fans of Urban Fantasy.
