Narrator Interview: Gomez Pugh #LoveAudiobooks

Posted by on Jun 25, 2018 in Miscellaneous | 6 comments

June is Audiobook Month. We will have several narrator interviews, along with other audiobook posts and of course audiobook reviews. Lastly, don’t forget to check out our giveaway.

Meet Gomez Pugh

Gomez Pugh was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, but left before it made him soft. Then he lived in New York City but left before it made him hard. But just barely. He now resides in Los Angeles and plans on staying until the sun turns his brains into scrambled eggs. When he is not narrating audiobooks, he is either at the beach or worrying about something. Even when he is standing still, his mind rarely is. He is a secret romantic, but has a sneaking suspicion that he is fooling no one. He has the soul of a pirate/poet and the mind of an accountant. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it. Thank you.

An Interview with Gomez Pugh

1. How did you get involved in recording audiobooks?

When I first moved back to LA, an old friend called me saying he had been asked to do a book he didn’t think he was right for, but I might be. I went in and auditioned and that was it!

2. What type of prepwork do you do before recording a new book? Do you prepare differently if the book is standalone or first in a series versus later books in a series?

I read through the book while taking notes: questions about pronunciation, character traits, anything that happens in the book that needs to be foreshadowed earlier, etc. I also mark up any particularly difficult passages so that when I get in the booth I have a better shot of getting through them without having to stop. Then I research character voices for accent/dialect and how the voices match up against each other.

When a book is a series, I go back and find the character voices from earlier books in the series. I have gotten better at saving clips so I don’t have to go back and scour through old audiobooks. I want to find the balance between keeping the voices consistent, but allowing them to evolve over the course of the series.

3. Do you narrate every book that comes your way or have you ever turned one down. And if you have what made you decide not to go forward with this project?

I have turned down a few. Sometimes it is that it just isn’t a good fit or you don’t connect with the material. But usually I am excited to get in the booth and tell an author’s story!

4. What is the element of narration that you find comes easiest (accents, age, emotion, rhythm of the story)?

I love reading first person narration. I can really get into the character and it feels like I am just telling the story to a friend. This also helps me get into the emotional space that the character is in. I also enjoy finding unique voices to use for the characters.

5. What is your favorite thing about performing audiobooks?

When I get so into the story that I almost forget I am narrating.

6. What was your most challenging read? What made it so difficult?

I narrated a book that had characters from Brazil and Ghana and Russia and Australia and China all talking in their native accents and sometimes in their native languages. And I don’t speak ANY of those languages!

7. Which famous person, living or dead, would you most like to meet and why?

Shakespeare was the first name that popped into my head. A master storyteller. I’d love to hear about what it was like when he was writing and producing all those plays!
