Life After Theft
Narrated by Johanna Parker
This is a brand new story for this anthology. I love Hope and Karl. Always have. After watching the show Bitten, I love Karl even more. I love the actor they got to play him. I thought he was great in season one. Anyway, Karl is retired from being a jewel thief werewolf, but someone really wants him to come out of retirement. They try really hard to get that to happen. Hope is an Expisco Half Demon, aka chaos demons because they thrive on chaos. Oh, and who is her demon half, none other than Lucifer himself. Oh, and they have a daughter. Think of that breeding and how much trouble that child can be. Though the child isn’t a large part of the story, she was adorable. Makes Elena and Clay’s kids seem calm.

Forbidden
Narrated by Brian Hutchison and Morgan Hallett
While this isn’t a new story, I hadn’t read it yet. It is sitting on my shelf waiting to be read, just hadn’t found the time yet. Well, now I have. This story is told mostly by Elena, though there is a new character who has some POV and Morgan, the werewolf that hasn’t joined the pack, but we met in Alaska and was trying an experiment of living as a wolf for two years. He is thinking about joining pack now. He is on his way to Stonehaven when he stops to get something to eat. His choice of town wasn’t the best choice. The town’s high school mascot, werewolves. Then after eating, he starts to have issues and goes out into the woods to change. He is then found in the snow by the local police naked with no human footprints around, just paw prints. Elena is called. Dead body is found. It is a pretty interesting story as Elena, Clay and Morgan investigate these murders so close to pack territory.

Angelic
This was a reread for me. I’ve actually read it, listened to it and now once more here. Eve is not my favorite character in the Otherworld series. However, I think this is my favorite story of hers. She is working part-time as an Angel and then gets time off to be just a ghost and spend time with her lover Kristof Nast (the father of her still living daughter, Savannah). When she is working, she works for the Fates, they shift from the old, middle aged to elder as she talks to them. I love the way that part is written, it flows very well as Eve is talking to them. I can almost picture the body switching from one Fate to the other. Here, she has to fix some issues with the Djinn. The Fates extend her work time to figure out the issue with the Djinn.

The Ungrateful Dead
Narrated by Johanna Parker
This is a short story is another reread for me about Jamie Vegas, famous necromancer. She is a TV psychic who talks to dead people on stage. While she can talk to ghosts, that isn’t what she does on TV. She works the crowd just like any other psychic hack. Reads people’s reactions and plays them. However, in this show, the actual person she’s talking to, the ghost shows up. I wonder if that ever happened to her before. She doesn’t, however, pass along Uncle Mo’s interest in her sister or tell her that he thought she was fat. There is also a ghost who taunts Jaime a ton trying to get her help. When she calls Savannah to get some new banishing supplies, they decide to learn more about this ghost and his request. That’s when things get weird. Also, when you’re a ghost, don’t piss off a necromancer, nothing good can come from it.

Zen and the Art of Vampirism
This is a short story about Zoe, a long time vampire member of the interracial council. Zoe has never been a large member of the Women of the Otherworld books, but she is a fun secondary character that pops up from time to time. She is very old and getting towards the end of her life and she knows it. In this story, two vampires are trying to take her territory of Toronto. It is fun to see how Zoe convinces these two that they don’t want to rethink their idea. We get to see several landmarks around Toronto, which is a city that I really want to visit. I’m ashamed to say that I drive through this city every year to and from my cabin in the summer, but have never done more than see it from afar. I really want to spend more time there. One day I will. This is another revisit for me.

Counterfeit Magic
Like Angelic, this is one that I’ve read, listened and now I’m revisiting at least for a third time. This book follows Lucas and Paige, plus there is time with Adam and Savannah. The team has to investigate a supernatural fight club. Benecio is still trying to lure Lucas into the Cortez cabal. There are some relationship issues between Lucas and Paige, which annoyed me. I loved getting to spend time with Adam and Savannah. This is one of my least favorite stories. Lucas and Paige are not my favorite anyway, but I do love Adam and Savannah, so that kept me from completely disliking this book. I did forget how much this story annoyed me though.

Otherworld Secrets Audiobook Narration

I really enjoyed the narration of all of these stories. Johanna Parker is the only narrator that I’m really familiar with. She narrates a ton of stuff that I love. I enjoyed the two stories she narrated here. I also enjoyed the narration of the other stories as well. I’m not sure who all narrated all the stories, but they all did a great job.

I’ve been telling stories since before I could write. My earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, mine would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to my teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make me produce “normal” stories failed. Today, I continue to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in my basement writing dungeon.

  1. I have to ask… are you up to date with the Other World series, then? Is it done? I started it waaaaaay back when but just couldn’t bring myself to read Dime Store Magic (that’s book 2, no?) I don’t know if something turned me off or I read a bad review but I think Elena annoyed me or something. But I’ve got to say, I’m liking the way all these other characters sound!!!!! I may have to pick up the series again. Jeez, I own it already anyways 😉 Love my used book sales!

Ps. don’t know if I mentioned this anywhere but your comments on my blog sat in my spam for weeks before I noticed – no clue why they went there!!!! Sorry!!!

    • I am caught up up on this series. It is completely, with a few short stories and novellas still coming out. No more full length novels. Dime Store Magic is the third book. It is told from Paige’s POV. I don’t like her as much as Elena, but I didn’t mind her. I know some others who were not fans. As much as I love this series, it was a bit hit or miss because different characters’ POV.

Yes, my comments have been going into some peoples’ spam lately. I don’t know why all of a sudden, but it isn’t just your site. 🙁

  2. I might need to check out the audios for this series as a whole. I remember reading the books on and off as they were being released but don’t remember all too much.

  3. I really need to start this series. I let go of CV, as soon as I finish BDB this will be my next back series, looks like audio is the way to go 🙂

    • This series is hit or miss with the audios. They don’t have the same narrator throughout the series, so some are great and some, not as much. It is a fun series. I hope you enjoy it.

  4. This is a series I haven’t started yet either, just like some of your other wonderful commenters, Melanie.
I found several of your comments in spam yesterday, too… I wonder why!

    • I’ve been getting put into spam on several sites. I usually notice it and message the person to tell them. I don’t know why I didn’t notice on your site. *I think I need more sleep* This is a fun series. I love this author.

  5. It’s been a long time for me for some of these. They sound familiar so could probably use a reread. I’m not a fan of collections, and I’ve never tried one on audio. I have to try this sometime. I can’t stand the thought I’very missed some of these. Especially Karl and Hope!

    • Karl and Hope are my second favorite couple in this series (no one can top Clay and Elena). I can’t imagine if you got Hope’s child together with the twins, they would be a terror. LOL I don’t do a lot of anthologies. I do like ones like this where they are all from one series/author. I love these short stories where we get to spend time with all those secondary characters who don’t get as much page time. Here, I love that we’re still getting some stories, since the series is technically over.

  6. I really need to read this series. I watched season one of Bitten and loved it and I have Bitten sitting on my shelf..sighs so many books…it’s every bookworms problem…lol.

    • There are some differences between season one and the first book, but they are fairly close. Starting with second season, the show really goes in a different direction from the books and the third one is nothing the same, except that the same character exist. I liked the show, but, as per usual, the books are better. 🙂

  7. I haven’t started this series yet either but I loved her YA ones (at least most of them anyways) and her newest one so I have no doubt I will love this as well.

    • The Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising series are set in the same world, but there isn’t any overlap of characters. The same rules apply and the same types of supernatural characters. If you liked those, I think you’ll like the Women of the Otherworld.

  8. Another series and author I haven’t picked up yet. That’s interesting that there are multiple narrators for the antho. So not just separate stories to enjoy, but each might have different likeabilities due to the narrator, too. Interesting…

    • They do have different narrators. I thought all of these narrators did a good job. Johanna Parker is a favorite of mine, so I was excited to have her in this narration. She did a couple of the books in the series too.

  9. I think I need to do a reread of this series. I think I only got halfway through and only stopped b/c I had to review so many books. I love this world and might pick them up in audio. I do think I may do this pack of novellas on audio. Brilly review. You also reminded me I need to start watching the tv show as well. 🙂

    • Some of the audios are really good, others are just okay. They aren’t consistent with narrators, so they are hit or miss. The first season of the show I thought was really good (though not as good as the book). Each season after went further downhill. They changed the storyline from the books and I didn’t like it, but was worth the watch.

  10. Sounds good Melanie and a few narrators I enjoy are in the group! Win Win!

    • It is always fun when you know going in that you’ll like the narration. 🙂

  11. Ugh! I keep going back and forth on this series and I think it’s the TV show that’s messing me up on whether or not this series will be worth reading or listening to. Your review though gives me hope.

    • The series is better than the show. It is a fun series. I hope you give it a try. The audios are hit or miss because they don’t have a consistent narrator for the series. 🙁

  12. This is a series I plan to eventually make my way to. I think I’ve read one of her stories in an anthology, but that’s it.

Btw, I actually received this post in my email! Yay!

    • We got the plugin figured out. YAY!

This is a fun series. I hope you get a chance to try it. I love Clay and Elena.

  13. Oh yes it’s always so much fun to read her stories!

    • I think I saw she is only doing one more of these anthologies in this world and then she is done. 🙁

  14. It’s been quite a while since I’ve read one of her books but all the reviews I’ve read have been great. Thanks for the review.

    • I so love her writing. I’ve gotten behind on a lot of her stories, I need to get caught back up. She is a fun author.

  15. I haven’t read this collection yet, but I do think I own this one, only haven’t bought the latest collection yet. I have already read Forbidden, but most of the others will be new to me ones. I hope I can read it soon as it sounds like another good collection!

    • I love these collections. It lets me get back into this world, which I miss. Sometimes I go back and listen to a story here and there between other books. I hope you enjoy it.

  16. I really do need to get caught up with this series. Aw Eve was one of my favorites for the series. lol

    • Haunted was one of my least favorite books, but I find that I like her better in the short stories. Hope/Karl and Clay/Elena are my favorites.

      • I think it was the only one that got a 5 star from me. lol

        • Hey, everyone has the characters they love. That is one thing I liked about this series. It was UF, but still had so many different POV, that you don’t normally see in UF.

  17. This seems like such a fun read! And I like how they’re short too so you don’t have to worry about staying on one story for too long. 🙂 I listened to the audio and fell in love with the narrator’s voice! I like how expressive she is and it makes me want to buy audiobooks now! 🙂

    • I do like these narrators. I wish this series was more consistent in narrators. There are several different ones that do the different books. Some are wonderful, other, not so much. I will say there are more good than “eh” narrators.
