Pride and Prejudice is a story of love and life among English gentility during the Georgian era. Mr Bennet is an English gentleman living in Hartfordshire with his overbearing wife. The Bennets’ 5 daughters include the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia. Unfortunately for the Bennets, if Mr. Bennet dies, their house will be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met, so the family’s future happiness and security is dependant on the daughters making good marriages.

Life is uneventful until the arrival in the neighborhood of the rich gentleman Mr. Bingley, who rents a large house so he can spend the summer in the country. Mr. Bingley brings with him his sister and the dashing (and richer) but proud Mr. Darcy. Love is soon in the air for one of the Bennet sisters, while another may have jumped to a hasty prejudgment. For the Bennet sisters many trials and tribulations stand between them and their happiness, including class, gossip and scandal.

My Thoughts

What can I say about Pride and Prejudice  that hasn’t been said or written about this wonderful novel, no doubt it is the literary masterpiece that it’s acclaimed to be, there is a reason a novel like this can stand the test of time, and after all if you are a romance fan like yours truly, this a must read/listen, how can you pass on a story so brilliantly told about, true love, money, deceit, social order, first impressions and the importance of reputation, and  one the sweetest  and  pragmatically character -driven romances, where the tension between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy leaves to want more and more.

I read  this book so many years ago, and  when I decided to re-visit this classic, I looked it up on audible, and I was surprised by the amount of choices,  just about every audio book publisher has a version (same book, just different narrator), so, I thought to give you my opinion on the  one I’ve listened to.

What makes this a unique experience; is how apparent Emilia fox’s acting training comes across; she literally acts every single part in this novel, you actually feel as if you are watching a play rather than listening to a book, within the first chapter, you forget you are in this century and begin to experience this novel and its characters come to life. Mrs. Bennett voice is performed with a voice just fitting of her character; clearly communicating her annoying personality. Elizabeth personality is perfectly flesh out with all her wit, charm and the sometimes acid tone towards Mr. Darcy doesn’t go unnoticed, as well as the arrogant manner of Mr. Darcy.

Her timing and pace are excellent, her clear British accent it’s easy to follow and understand, and I say this because sometimes I have a hard time with some narrators of these classics, there are  some British accents I have a very difficult time understanding, it may be just me..lol.. But I just thought I mentioned it anyway.

This is a great  choice for re-visiting this classic, but whatever you do, stay away from the abridge versions.
