Lucy Marinn is a glass artist living in mystical, beautiful, Friday Harbor, Washington, with a boyfriend, Kevin, who she believes is her soul mate. She has always had a magical side – a gift that finds its way into the breathtaking glasswork she creates – and she struggles to keep it contained. But when Lucy is blindsided by the most bitter kind of betrayal, she questions many of her choices. Her boyfriend leaves her and his new lover is none other than Lucy’s own sister. Lucy’s bitterness over this devastation ismultiplied buy the fact that she has constantly made the wrong choices in her romantic life.

Meanwhile, facing the severe disapproval of Lucy’s family, Kevin asks his friend Sam Nolan, a local vineyard owner on the San Juan Island, to “romance” Lucy so that she can more easily move on. But when Sam and Lucy begin to feel real sparks between them, Lucy must ask herself if she can easily risk her heart again.

As Lucy questions her beliefs about love, loyalty, and old patterns, mistakes, and new beginnings, she explores the possibility that some things in life – even after are being broken – can be re-made into something beautiful. And that is the only by discovering who you really are that you can find the one who truly deserves you.

My Thoughts

I love the way Ms.Kleypas delivers time after time real and relatable characters with a compelling back-story that brings them forward shaped by their experiences, and as a result we get multidimensional characters that inevitably captivate you with their story and drama.
As a child, Lucy discovers a world of magic, magic that will come to shine in her darkest moments, and it will be up to reader/listener to accept this new and unexpected element.
I love a slow and well-developed romance! This is exactly what we get with Sam and Lucy. As they slowly realize how much they care for each other you will also find yourself partaking in their drama and living their emotions, and sometimes some of your own.
I loved the way the element of magic was flawlessly added to the story to give a touch of whimsical to this otherwise down to earth drama. In the end, without giving any spoilers; this is a fabulous read/listen, the combination of very real human emotions, family betrayals, the challenging upbringing of some of the characters, and the sensuality always so delicious of Ms.Kleypas’ novels yield another engrossing and compelling story nothing short of fantastic.

Narration

Tania Eby is a new-to me narrator, and  a truly  pleasant surprise.
Having read the book not even 6 weeks prior, I never expected to be captivated the way I did with Eby’s performance, but from the moment I started to listen I didn’t stop, she gave the story the right mood, bringing the characters and story to life consistent with Ms. Kleypas’ style of writing.
Her interpretation of Lucy is right on target; it conveys a strong understanding of the character by bringing her to life in the way I had imagined and in some instances even better than I had.
Her approach to the rest of the characters is as equally admirable; I had no trouble distinguishing female and male voices nor did I their personality, each character is brought forward with the appropriate traits that make you get them as they were intended.
I highly recommend the audiobook to any fan of Ms. Kleypas or to any fan of the contemporary romance genre; this was an easy and thoroughly entertaining listen.
