June is Audiobook Month. We will have several narrator interviews, along with other audiobook posts and of course audiobook reviews. Lastly, don’t forget to check out our giveaway.

For this year’s JIAM, I thought it would be fun to do a book tag specific to audiobooks. I found this one hosted by Books and Things YouTube Channel. It is more an interview style so it will be like I’m interviewing myself. Haha! If you enjoy doing tags, feel free to consider yourself tagged.
Well, here goes…

1. Have you always listened to audiobooks or when did you begin?

I have not always listened to audios. In fact, compared to some, I’m a rookie. I started listening to audios (won’t count the Disney kid records back in the day) in the Fall of 2015 when I took Audible.com up on their free trial book.

2. What is your favorite audiobook?

Um, this question is a bit torturous.  Naming one is just not possible since l love a handful for different reasons.  But, I guess one that marries the best of story and voice is The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson and narrated by George Guidall.  There are others, but this is the first one to leap to mind.

3. What is my least favorite thing about audiobooks?

I know there are technical things like mispronouncing words or background sounds that are troublesome, but for me, it’s something subjective: the voice of the narrator. Sometimes, at no fault of their own, I find a narrator a poor match for the story they are reading. This may be because of the image I have in my mind of what the character’s sound like, but most of the time, it’s more of an immediate reaction. This is preference and falls in the same category as mood reading.

4. What do you think is the difference in experience between physically reading a book and listening to it?

For me, there are two things. Audiobooks draw out the emotion of the story more. I’ve read books and felt emotionally engaged, but it gets way more visceral when I listen. Sex and violent scenes for sure. The second thing is retention. I do better remembering a story that I read rather than listened to. I noticed this when I started reviewing. I remember details, names, and more that I didn’t have to note down when I read that I have to note down for audio reviews.

5. How and when do you listen?

My listening is mostly when out on my almost daily walks or while doing chores. I am blessed not to have a commute and short distances I find books too distracting. So, I get in an hour or two a day with frequent pauses. As to how, I use my phone for Audible books and my iPod for others. And… once in a while, I’ll play a book on my computer through the speakers if I’m doing something like folding clothes or ironing and have the house to myself.

6. What style/genre do you prefer?

Mostly romance for print books, but I find that I enjoy sci-fi, historical, mysteries, memoirs, and general fiction just fine, too. I’m not sure what is meant by style so I’ll say I prefer one narrator or a dramatized production. I’m slowly finding a few dual narrations that I like.

7. What are some audiobook/narrator recommendations?

I seriously doubt that I have any that aren’t already on someone else’s list, but I’ll give it a whack just in case with a few new ones since my last year’s fav list:
Samuel Roukin reading Lost Boy by Christina Henry
Janet Metzger reading the Love in Provence series by Patricia Sands
Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon reading Dane’s Storm by Mia Sheridan
Elizabeth Knowelden reading the Lady Hardcastle Mysteries by TE Kinsey
Amy Melissa Bentley reading Alex Approximately by Jenn Bennett
