When I saw the cover for the Unborn Audiobook, read the blurb and saw that Angela Dawe was narrating the story I decided to give it a shot, despite the mixed reviews I’ve read on Goodreads. I also remembered reading a good review at Rabid Reads a few weeks back; that clinched my decision.
The setting in Unborn is very interesting. I do enjoy stories that have aspects of mythology woven into them, mix a falling Angel, dark Angels, light Angels, Gods and Goddesses, Gargoyles and Soul Stealers – now my ears are perking. Unborn is my first experience with this author, but not my last.
We get two worlds; the underworld where Khara, the heroine and the story teller has spent all of her existence under the protection of her adoptive father. The other is earth, where the sons of the God of Wars (a group of alpha warriors), petrol to keep everyone in line.
When Khara gets ripped away from her world and is dropped in the middle of the dilapidated city of Detroit we begin to find out who she truly is. The ensemble of characters begin to populate the pages, and slowly but nicely we get introduced to the world.
I liked the characters.
Four brothers and a newly found sister make for a lot of interesting interactions, and though at first Khara seemed a little detached and unemotional, I liked her, after all, logic and detachment have been part of her training to survive her world.
I liked the brothers and their distinctive personality. Never-mind that I’m not 100% attached to them yet, but it was a really good introduction, and I can easily see me caring deeply for these characters with future development.
Of course, I never get bored of finding the quintessential bad-ass that holds the mystery, the good looks, and the sex appeal that hints at a romantic development. I liked him a lot! His name is OZ….I like it.
I enjoyed the world and the plot.
Post recession Detroit makes a perfect setting for this paranormal/mythological world to grow, and a great ground zero for these beings to duke it out.
Protecting their sister, their routine patrol duties, and the malevolent events that have followed their sister arrival opens up the story for some action.
The world is fairly well developed, we are left with a very good understanding of the plot, and although I’d have liked more questions answered, my curiosity has been picked, and since the story is to be continued, I’ll be picking the next Audiobook when it comes out.
I believe the Author has mixed good ingredients to turn this into a super enjoyable series, I’m curious to see where she take us from here.
All in all, Unborn was a nice and easy listen, recommended for those looking for a new UF series that has a lot potential.
Unborn Audiobook Narration
If there were ever an Audiobook that utilized Angela Dawe’s talent, Unborn is it.
Her remarkable range of male voices is great! From the authoritarian tone of one of the brothers to the playfulness of some, and finally to the mysterious and bad-ass attitude of OZ Angela ‘s interpretation is right on.
Angela Dawe has a melodic tone to her reading, and I always need a few minutes to adjust before is not noticeable, but once I do, it’s always a smooth sailing. I always enjoy her readings.
Her interpretation of the heroine was excellent, I got her unemotional personality, but I easily saw her progress as she became more acquainted with her new family.
The pace and the right tone for the story made Unborn an entertaining listen, and I’m certain this story has been moved up a notch by Angela Dawe’s performance.
I’m looking forward to next Audiobook.
