Holiday Traditions

Melanie

cookie-120pxWe don’t have much of a holiday tradition around my house any more. But when I was growing up as a small child, I was lucky enough to have both sets of my grandparents at my house on Christmas morning to be with me and my older brother when we got to see what Santa had brought up.

I should say that every Christmas Eve, we got to open one Christmas present, that was always new PJs, so that our Christmas pictures would be nice. Then on Christmas morning, we were not allowed out of our bedrooms until both sets of grandparents had arrived. Then both me and my brother got to come out and go through stockings and open all our presents.

christmaswrench-120pxLooking back on that time, I know that I was truly blessed to be surrounded by so much family. Knowing how so many families are separated either by divorce or just distance from grandparents, not to mention that grandparents have several sets of grandkids to get to. I was very fortunate. I lost my father and both of his parents when I was around 8 or 9 all within a year’s time. Christmas is one of the few memories that I have with all them. I was lucky enough to have my mom’s parents until they past just a few years ago. I still have my mom, who will be with me this Christmas, all the way from Alaska. We don’t do much in the way of gifts and celebration, but it is great to see some of my family.

All my “family” traditions stopped when I turned 18 and I moved to this country; I was the only one in my family that moved to USA.

rocket-120pxBack then every 24th of Dec. the whole family and I mean the WHOLE family (uncles, cousins, grandparents, parents) would get together to feast and exchange gifts. These parties were big; there would always be around 30+ people…I told you…The Whole family..LOL..And don’t let me forget to mention the insane amount of fireworks!

On the 25th, we would get up early in the morning and head to the beach…Yes, the 25th was a big party in every beach. The memories of this times are dear to me, and I’m glad I was the kind of kid that enjoy every moment…I just loved getting to see all my cousins that I hadn’t seen all year.

To be honest, I don’t know how it became a tradition, but every year we find ourselves opening a really good bottle of wine and watching this TOTALLY AWESOME movie. And it gets funnier as the wine goes down..LOL – I don’t know if it’s the wine, but A Christmas Story  never gets old to us.
