This novella set in the Hidden Legacy world is a bridge between Nevada as the lead character to move to Catalina, Nevada’s younger sister. So Nevada and Mad Rogan are getting married. As if that wouldn’t be chaotic enough, a crown that Nevada is to wear in the wedding, a family heirloom in Rogan’s family, goes missing. Rogan’s mother doesn’t want to upset Nevada, so she asks Catalina to look into it.

So, Catalina has some massive power. Most people don’t know what it is, which is the way she wants it. She has the powers of a siren, so to speak. She can make people fall in love with her and do whatever she asks. She’s never really tried to develop her powers, but mostly works on keeping them contained and just avoiding people in general. She has to use her powers to figure out what happened with this crown.

I really enjoyed this short novella. We already see Catalina growing up, as she takes more of a role in the family business, investigations. She has learned that she must learn how to do more than just keep her powers under control. I think I’m really going to enjoy my time with Catalina, even as I will miss time with Nevada as the leading lady.

Overall, this was a fun story and a nice bridge between the two main women in the series.

Diamond Fire Audiobook Narration

4.5 Hearts

So, this book starts off with Renee Raudman narrating as Nevada. Then quickly the reins are turned over to Emily Rankin as she narrates Catalina. I’m not sure the reason for a change in narrator. Renee Raudman has been narrating Ilona Andrews books since the beginning (with the exceptions of male narrated stories). I think it was a shock to most fans to have someone else narrate this story.

All that being said, I thought that Emily Rankin did a great job with the narration. I liked everything about her narration. She does a great job with the wide cast of characters (there were quite a few characters in this book, especially considering the length), and she did a great job with all of them. I thought the male and female voices were done well. Her pace and tone worked great for the series as well.

While, I’ll miss Renee Raudman’s narration of this series going forward. I think Emily Rankin will be a great substitute. I have no doubt that she will win the hearts of the Ilona Andrews fans if given a chance. I know that she has already won mine.

Ilona Andrews

Authors – Ilona Andrews

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children, and many dogs and cats. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. Nice review. I did read this one, but it’s on my TBR for audiobook. Like you, I’ll miss Renee R., but I will certainly give the new narrator a chance! Thanks!

    • Emily Rankin does a good job. I’m going to miss Raudman though.

  2. I promise I will one of these days read a novel by this prolific author team. Sounds great thanks Melanie

    • You won’t regret it. I promise. They have great characters, world-building and tons of snark.

  3. I had such a great time with this novel as well!

  4. If I ever get the time I will give book 2 a go 🙂 and in audio! hehe

  5. This was a nice transition from Nevada to Catalina.
Hmm, that is different about the switch in narrators. I do like Rankin already so that is good.

    • I’m not sure why the decision to switch narrators. I think this was my first time Rankin. I do like her. But I will miss Renee Raudman. She’s been a favorite of mine for a long time.

  6. I still have only read the first one in their first series. I do own a couple from the next series but have never started it. I’m glad you are continuing to enjoy these authors books!

    • So you’ve read the first Kate book. That is a really fun series. They’ve just brought it to and end last year. I do think they will have spinoff series set in the same world, though.

  7. I read the first couple of books in this series but now I’m behind. I need to catch up, it really is such a fun and unique series.

  8. I enjoyed this one. Never did the audio though.

    • I really loved the first three on audio, as Renee Raudman is a favorite narrator of mine. I do think the new lady is good too. It will just take a bit to get used to her.

  9. Wait…there’s a new narrator? Why? I am sure that I will get used to the new narrator but it will feel wrong for a while. Glad you enjoyed this one.

    • I’m not sure why they are changing narrators. The authors did do a blog post, but they didn’t really go into the reason for the change. Since the series is changing from Nevada as the main character to Catalina, it will make the change in narrator easier, I think. I do think Rankin sounded great, so she should be good going forward.

  10. I really enjoyed this one as well, but I had the same feelings as you did regarding the narration. I wasn’t sure about the change, at first, but I settled in with Emily and enjoyed the rest of the book. I can’t wait for more.

  11. I read this one and I bought both the ebook and audio formats. I loved this. But then I love everything Ilona Andrews. It’s great to have your thoughts on the narration; I look forward to rereading that way before the next book. Anne – Books of My Heart

  12. I will definitely miss Raudman, but I think they way they made the change worked out really well. I’m excited to continue on with Catalina with hopefully lots of Nevada and Rogan included as they work on cases. I can’t wait for more!

    • Agreed. I hope Nevada and Rogan make a lot of appearances too.

  13. I read this one and enjoyed it. I didn’t know it was going to be on audio until after I read it. I might try the next one on audio to see if I like Emily Rankin.

  14. This is the only series by Andrews I don’t listen to. I did it to see if I would love the books as much if I read them… I did but the voices in my head became those of the characters..and here we are!

    • I have a hard time sometimes when I start reading a series before I listen. It took me a bit to get into Gideon’s Riders series after having read the first three books.
