Freed picks up about a month or so after the end of Struck. Phoebe has been training with the other Valkyrie. She is learning fast, but the other Valkyrie have been training since they were very young children. She has a lot to make up before she can compare. She has the great support of her Aunt Ingrid, her boyfriend and son of Loki, Fen, her half brother Tyr, who is also the god of war, she also has her best friend, Sam, who is a human, but has a little extra there. Some of the Valkyrie are accepting her, others are not, there are more that just down right out dispise her.

When Huggie, a raven and friend, shows up with a message for Phoebe, she learns that she can wait no longer to save her mother. She must venture into the world of the dark elves without the help of friends or the other Valkyrie. She isn’t sent alone though. She has the half-giant and half-troll, Junnal to accompany her.

It doesn’t take long for Phoebe to get into trouble in this world. Even with a cloak that is to hide her, she is discovered. It seems that Phoebe’s chances of saving her mother are slipping away. She does meet people along the way that can help her. She comes across Balder, god of light, who has been imprisoned with the dark elves by his own mother, no less (though she was trying to protect him from his fated death). There is also Callan, a white elf and mage. Who became a good friend to Phoebe. Junnal was a favorite character for me in this book. He is such a sweet guy. Wanted nothing more than to make sure that Phoebe was safe.

This story was full of action. There wasn’t a huge amount of romance in this one, as Phoebe and Fen aren’t together much in this book. The lack of romance isn’t a big deal to me, but I could see where others might be frustrated by it. I did miss time with Fen, Tyr, Ingrid and Sam. But the time with Junnal and the introduction of Baldar and Callan was great. If you’re looking for a fast-paced urban fantasy, this is a fun book. I do recommend you read book one first though.

Freed Audiobook Narration

Once again, I thought that Emma Wilder did a great job with the narration of this book. She stays with the same voices for the characters who have returned. I think she does a good job with the pacing of this action-packed story. I really want to call out her voices of the dark elves. I think the voices she picked really close to what was described in the story. They had high-pitched voices (and voices I wouldn’t want to attempt to imitate). I also liked the voice of Junnal. This is the only series that I’ve listened to by Emma Wilder, but I would definitely be on the lookout for more.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. The lack of romance doesn’t bother me, I am used that in good UF. I like the sound of the raven, this sounds unique. Thanks for the giveaway chance.

    • Same here. I have no problems with the lack of romance. I know it will for some others. The raven is pretty cool.

  2. I’ve enjoyed the books I’ve read from her. Pretty sure I have book one of this sitting on my kindle >.<

    • I need to get back to her werewolf series. I’m way behind on it. I’ve gone through all the ones that are on audio, but when the audio publisher stopped producing them, I haven’t gotten around to the books.

  3. Even without the romance, it sounds like a nice one. I have it but I still need to read it. I’m a bit late…

    • Yeah, the lack of romance isn’t an issue for me either. I like action in both my UF and PNR. 🙂

  4. I like what you are saying about the action and the world building of this series. It’s UF so I can deal with a mild romance element, but I can see missing the familiar characters if they aren’t around for much of the story while she’s off on her rescue quest. Definitely want to try this series at some point b/c I love Norse mythology.

    • I’m seeing more and more books around Norse Mythology. I can say that I’m happy to read them. 🙂

  5. I knew I was in for a pretty fast paced story. I totally agree, I missed Tyr, Fen and Sam. They were my favorites from STRUCK and wished they had bigger roles in this book. Now we have quite the merry group of characters and I think I’m going to have a hard time keeping everyone straight!

    • I’ve read several series with many characters, so I hope it won’t be too hard to keep them all straight. Amanda does stick to fast paced stories

  6. I agree with Heidi, I don’t really expect romance in my UFs but it is nice when it’s there. This does sound fun and unique, something different from the norm.

    • I feel the same way. I read UF for the action, which this has in spades. 🙂

  7. Hmmm… I burned out on her first series after loving the first couple books. I haven’t been able to try her stuff again.

    • I’ve only read the first three books in her werewolf series. When they were no longer on audio, I quit reading them. I have the next book in that series in paperback, but haven’t gotten to it.

  8. Valkyries!!!! I’m usually never on the lookout for stories featuring this fantastical race but when a see a story featuring them I automatically want to one-click.

    • I do love Valkyries. Immortals After Dark will always be my favorite, but these are fun too.

  9. A lack of romance is also not a huge thing to me either. I also think you had me at Huggie. 🙂 This one sounds like a audio I could really melt into and just forget the world for a moment. *ah* 🙂

    • I love Huggie. I wish he had a larger part in the series. Junnal was adorable enough to make up for just a little bit of time with Huggie.

  10. Thanks Melanie for the review and chance to win a copy. Looking forward to visit this world

  11. This sounds like an action packed read with some lesser seen supernatural/ mythology types like Valkyries. Too bad you didn’t see some of the characters as much in this one, but it’s fun to meet some new characters as well. Junnal sounds like a great characters!

    • Hopefully, there will be more of those characters in the next book. 🙂

  12. Sounds like this was a great follow up book in the series. Sometimes it’s necessary to cut back on the romance to develop the plot more, so I think it would work for me. Glad you are continuing to enjoy the narration too!

    • I agree. I don’t mind the lack of romance. I know that some do, so I thought I would include that bit of information.

  13. She’s one I’ve not read yet. Good to know about being best read in order 🙂

    • I read her first series, but I stopped when they quit putting them on audio. I still want to read them, just don’t know when I will get to them.

  14. I like UF better, I think, when the romance plays a lesser role in the story, so this sounds right up my alley. I’ve wanted to read this series but haven’t been able to fit it in. I think audio is the way to go. I’ll be able to fit it in sooner!

    Great review.

    • I’ve really enjoyed the audio. The narrator does a really good job. I hope that you enjoy. 🙂
