Red Rising Trilogy #2

19 hours and 2 mins

Genre: Fantasy/Sci-Fi

With shades of The Hunger Games, Ender’s Game, and Game of Thrones, debut author Pierce Brown’s genre-defying epic Red Rising hit the ground running and wasted no time becoming a sensation. Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom from the overlords of a brutal elitist future built on lies. Now fully embedded among the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his work to bring down Society from within.

A life-or-death tale of vengeance with an unforgettable hero at its heart, Golden Son guarantees Pierce Brown’s continuing status as one of fiction’s most exciting new voices.

My thoughts of Golden Son Audiobook

  • must read icon

Yup, it’s a must read/listen! You would think that after reading gushing reviews of Golden Son over at Kimba Caffeinated Book Reviews, The Bookaholic Cat and Christy’s Love of Books my expectations would have been unreachable.

  • On an epic continuation Pierce Brown takes us in another thrilling and mind blowing journey where every chapter is a mini cliffhanger, ones that culminate in mother of all cliffhangers! The politics, the betrayals, the cunning, the plays for power and the fight to bring the Golds to their knees will give you whiplash…But Oh boy! Did I love/suffer every minute of it! All told with the voice of a hero whose inner struggles between  the red he is and the gold he’s pretending to be will prove “trust”  his biggest fault, while finding himself getting closer to those he has vow to destroy.
  • well written

The way, in which Brown’s injects Darrow’s inner-monologue with the right words to convey his struggles with his duplicity and the deep emotions is just magical.
The characters are perfectly fleshed out (new and old), and if you thought some alliances were questionable in Red Rising, you have seen nothing yet! I’m totally invested in this cause, and I lived Dorrow’s ups and downs with raw emotions, not to mention at the edge of my seat.

  • Out this world

There’s really not a lot I can say about what goes on with the plot without giving spoilers. Two years have gone by, and a lot has changed and then again nothing has changed. We find Darrow while he continues his path towards revenge and the liberation from the Golden tyrants. And while he navigates a political minefield that can really quickly turn into quicksand, you feel spent. All to reach an ending that rivals that of the Red Wedding (if you’re a fan of GOT, this is a must) when it comes to shock and surprises, it blew my mind!
I can’t recommend this trilogy enough, don’t let Sci-fi label scare you away (I’m not a fan of Sci-Fi), if you a fan of fantasy, political intrigue, and cheering for the underdog, then this series is for you!

  • Golden Son Audiobook Narration

Narrator Tim Gerard Reynolds truly puts you there!
The second guessing I did with Red Rising when it came to his voice not conveying a 16-year-old was all forgotten in Golden Son.
His interpretation of the novel lets you experience the world as it’s meant to be. The vigor in his interpretation of the actions and suspense scenes creates the perfect atmosphere that will keep you at the edge of your seat.
His array of voices gives the novel true authenticity, and it’s commendable.
I can’t say his female voices are the best I’ve ever listened to, far from it,  but in a story where the author hardly gives time to take a breath they are hardly noticeable.
This was all around winner for me, and I hoping it’s for you too!

Pierce Brown spent his childhood building forts and setting traps for cousins in the woods of six states and the deserts of two. Graduating from college in 2010, he fancied the idea of continuing his studies at Hogwarts. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a magical bone in his body. So while trying to make it as a writer, he worked as a manager of social media at a startup tech company, toiled as a peon on the Disney lot at ABC Studios, did his time as an NBC page, and gave sleep deprivation a new meaning during his stint as an aide on a U.S. Senate campaign. Now he lives Los Angeles, where he scribbles tales of spaceships, wizards, ghouls, and most things old or bizarre.
