I know so many people who have been reading (or well, listening) to this series for a while now. I know that they love it and I’ve yet to try it. That is until now. After finally knocking out a few series (my goal for this year was to finish up some new series before starting new ones), I decided that I was ready to tackle a new series. How to review this series? Most people have already read it. If you haven’t I highly recommend that you start. I can’t believe I waited this long.

Atticus O’Sullivan is a druid. The last druid to be precise. He is quite old, but tries mostly to live a peaceful life. He owns and runs a bookstore and apothecary in Tempe Arizona. That is until an old god that he has a past grief with comes calling. Next thing you know, Atticus has trouble at every turn.

I won’t go into great detail, as there are so many reviews out there about this series. I will just say, that this is a great Urban Fantasy series, that is nicely told from a male’s POV, which we don’t have enough of in this genre (don’t get me wrong, I love a good female heroine, but I also like a little diversity too). This series has vampires, werewolves, gods, witches (boy, does Atticus hate witches), ghouls and more. It is hard to know who to trust and who is out for their own gain.

There are a ton of great pop culture references in this book, which adds a great amount of humor to this book.

“You’re not going to be in the hospital for weeks? Because that looks like a bullet hole in your shirt.”
“As the Black Knight famously said, that’s just a fleshwound.”
“The Black Knight always triumphs!” Perry beamed. Monty Python is like catnip for nerds. Once you get them started quoting it, they are constitutionally incapable of feeling depressed.

“You will respect my authori-tah!” Oberon said, in a passable imitation of Eric Cartman. I reminded him that I needed to concentrate. Sometimes dogs forget; they just get too excited.

My favorite part of this first book in the Iron Druid Chronicles, Oberon, Atticus’ Irish wolfhound. Atticus is bonded to Oberon, so that they can talk mind to mind. So while Oberon can’t talk out loud, Atticus can have conversations with him that we can hear. Oberon is very much a dog though, so everything you think about a dog holds true. He has no sense of time. He gets overly excited when he sees Atticus, no matter how long Atticus was gone. He has the attention span of a two-year-old on a caffeine bender. All he thinks about is meat, different kinds of meat. He seems to be partial to sausages (I’m a little disappointed that at no point does he ask for bacon. What kind of talking dog doesn’t want bacon. I always want bacon).

This is actually my first audiobook with Luke Daniels. I’ve heard for a long time about how great Luke Daniels was with narrations. I’m so glad I can now add him to my list of favorite narrators. He did a great job with this series. While being told from Atticus’ POV, it still has plenty of female characters and Daniels nails them all. Once again, I have to give him kudos for nailing Oberon’s voice. He really brought out the excitement that a talking dog would have about pretty much everything. He even brought the sorrow about things when Oberon had to do things he didn’t want or when he thought he was a bad dog. I’m really excited to continue this series with his narration. I will also be on the lookout for other books with his narration.

Kevin Hearne

Kevin is the author of The Iron Druid Chronicles, an urban fantasy series published by Del Rey Books. The first six books of the series are now out as well as a novella that’s book 4.5 and some other short works. The seventh book, SHATTERED, will be released June 17.

Narrator: Luke Daniels

Luke Daniels was born into a family of actors. Both his father and mother have been performing and teaching for almost five decades. It is because of their influence that, from a very young age, Luke and his two brothers often found themselves in rehearsal halls at repertory theatres all over the country; watching innumerable productions of Much Ado, Julius Caesar, and Midsummer’s.

Luke’s first theatrical role came at the age of 5 as Fleance in a production of Macbeth. He immediately loved the creativity and camaraderie of the theatre. (It also didn’t hurt that he was allowed to miss school for certain performances.)

Over the years Luke has performed at many repertory theatres across the country, including the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Connecticut Rep., and Hope Summer Rep. in Holland, Michigan. Luke has his Bachelor’s from Western Michigan University and his MFA in performance from the University of Connecticut.

Luke has worked professionally as a director, teacher, audiobook narrator, voice-over, commercial, and industrial actor.

But he maintains that the greatest role he has ever played is that of a Father to his daughter.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

    • I can’t believe I waited this long to started this series. It was so good.

  1. I’ve only read book 3 (?) in this series. I know, I’m good like that lol. I really enjoyed it though and need to get back to the series. So glad you liked it!!

    • I’ve been working through several series that I started and haven’t finished yet. I forced myself finish a few series before I started this series.

  2. I am so glad you loved this book. It is one of my all time fav series, and I adore Luke Daniels. I hope you continue to enjoy the seires, but I will warn you book six is one that requrires patience.

    • I can’t wait to see what you’re referring to in book six.

  3. Loved this book! Glad you were able to get to it. I’m switching to audio for the rest of the series.

    • Luke Daniels does an amazing job. You will enjoy his narration.

    • Eep! I didn’t know you had started this series. I love it on audio. It’s another series that I only listen to.

I’ve been saving the last two releases for my drive to and from KY in a couple of weeks.

And Jonetta I didn’t know you had read (or listened) to this!

      • Just started. I’ve already got book two ready to go. Not sure if it will be next or book three in Arcana Chronicles. You and Carmel have been after me for a while to start this series. I’m glad I finally did.

  4. This definitely looks like something I would read. Thanks for your review!

    • It is a great start to a series. I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. It has been on my TBR list for years. I don’t know what took me so long to start it.

  5. YES! I love this series. Atticus is my ultimate book boyfriend. lol. I actually read this book, but then listened to the rest. Luke Daniels gets a lot of credit for getting me interested in audio. 😀

    • I wish I had started this series much sooner. I really enjoyed this book. I’ve already got book two on my iPod to listen to very soon. This was my first book with Luke Daniels. I can see why everyone raves about him.

  6. Ah yes everyone is loving this series. I have the first book for a while now but I still need to try it… so alte *sighs* but it’s great to see it was a good time for you too.

    • I do love when I start a series so late, post a review and hear that I’m not the only one late to the party. I hope you get a chance to try it. It was a really fun start to a series. I’m excited to get to the next book.

  7. So, this one has been on my list for some time as well. I have heard so many good things about it. You rated the audio so well I might have to try listening to it. I felt bad at a signing of a group of authors and Kevin Hearne was there but I hadn’t read one of his books. I definitely need to fix that!

    • This was a great start to the series. I’m really excited to get to book two. So many great authors it is hard to get to all of them. This isn’t the only series that has been on my ever growing TBR pile for some time now. I hope you get a chance to try it. I can’t recommend the audio enough.

  8. Ha! You’re not the only one behind on this series. I’ve read this book, but never moved on to finish the series. I loved it, but I’m in the same boat you are about finishing other series first.

Loved Oberon and the humor in this one. I haven’t listened to Luke Daniels before, but glad he’s another good one.

    • So many great books and authors, it is hard to get to them all. It is really hard to prioritize all of them. I am glad to know that I’m not the only one with this issue. I really hope you get a chance to pick this series back up. I highly recommend the audios. Luke Daniels is amazing.

  9. I’m glad this was a good read. You’ve reminded me this is in my TBR since 2012!

    • That is probably how long it was on mine. It seems like forever. I’m so glad I started. I hope you get a chance to start it soon.

  10. I have a print copy of this book and I have been thinking of getting it on audio to try as I want to try this series. Now that I see Luke Daniels is the narrator I am pretty sure now that I must get it on audio…lol. 🙂

    • The audio was amazing. Luke Daniels did a great job. I will be sticking with the audio throughout this series. I’ve already got the second book ready to listen to on my iPod. Now I just need to figure out time to listen. LOL

  11. This is one of those series I’ve seen around or heard about quite often, especially a few years ago it seemed popular, and still have not a good feel of where the series is about as I never really read the blurb or anything.
It does sound like a good urban fantasy series and indeed it’s rare to have a male main character. I like the sound of Oberon, I always like animals/ pets in books and it sounds fun how the main character can communicate with him. Great review!

    • Atticus is an extremely old druid that uses magic and runs an occult bookstore. He has a werewolf and vampire for lawyers. There are witches, gods and some other nasties too. This book was a great start to the series with some pop culture references and lots of different paranormal creatures. Oberon is the best. 🙂 I’ve already got book two ready to listen too soon.

  12. Trust me… Oberon would not pass on a free bacon… ever. 😀 I love this series and I also love it on audio. I am behind but want to do it on audio as long as Luke reads the series.

    • No one should ever pass up free bacon. I don’t think it was mentioned in this book. His obsession was sausages and french poodles. LOL I think there might be a revolt if Luke Daniels ever quits the narration. I can see why so many people love him.

  13. Christy has been bugging me to read this series. I own book one, but maybe Audio is the way to go. Darn you and your positively fab review.

    • I know the feeling. You’ve added a ton to my TBR list too. 🙂 It is a great series and I can’t recommend the audio enough.

  14. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has yet to start this series… well now that you have, I may be LOL! I tend to be less drawn to books with male main characters but I agree, some diversity is nice. And yeah, Luke Daniels is another narrator I haven’t personally listened to, but Jennifer sings his praises and now you too, so I guess this is one I’m going to have to listen to sooner than later. Great review Melanie 🙂

    • I don’t read a lot series with a male main character. I think I have three now. This one, The Dresden Files and Heartstriker by Rachel Aaron, which follows a male dragon. I will say that I love all three series so far. All with male narrators who do a great job. I hope you get a chance to try this series, it has been a lot of fun so far.

  15. I SO agree with you MELS! <3 There isn't enough male POV! I make sure to add this into my stories when I write because I always love to hear the male side of things because even though I LOVE the heroine's thoughts, I love to hear what the guy has to say as well!

Thanks for sharing this with us Mel! <3

    • I read three male POV’s right now. This one, Heartstriker series by Rachel Aaron and Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

  16. I keep meaning to pick up this series because so many love it. I think I have the first few books even. I will have to push this one up the pile. 😉

    • I was the same way. Glad to know I’m not the only one. So many great books, it is hard to keep up.

  17. Another series that I have the first book of, but haven’t started yet. I was hoping to buddy read this with my kid, I think those days are gone! Hahaha… he’s not interested, maybe I can guilt him later on

    • This is such a fun series. Maybe after you listen to one or two, you can convince your son to give it a go. I so love this story. I’m excited to pick up the next one.

  18. Okay… you’ve convinced me to add this to my TBL list!!

    • It is a great read Jen. I recommend the audio. Luke Daniels does an amazing job.

  19. YAY!!! Oh, the quotes abound!! What I loved about this series? That I could share it with my hubs – he won’t read anything written by a woman. He’s not biased, he just doesn’t like a woman’s voice in writing. But we read these books together – I couldn’t keep up with him! I thought they were funnier than Dresden Files 🙂 Did you ever read/listen to Butcher?

    • I can understand that. I don’t read a ton of male writers. I like the voice of women better. I am listening to The Dresden Files, just not reviewing them. I am way behind, I think I just listened to book 7. It is a series that I’m just listening to for fun.

  20. Ah dang. Okay I really do need to get on this one. It’s been on the tbr pile for what seems like forever!

    • It has been on my TBR forever too. I’m really glad I finally picked it up.

    • I thought I was the last person to read this series until I posted this review and several other people said they hadn’t started it yet. I don’t feel so bad for being late to the party now. It has been really fun so far. I’m listening to book two right now.

  21. Haha! I love that Atticus hates witches… sounds like with a passion! I really like the sound of this Urban Fantasy! Thanks for the heads up!

    • This series is so great. It is one that I can’t believe it took me this long to get to it. I can’t recommend it enough. So good.
