When the world ends, can love survive?

For Scarlet, raising her two daughters alone means fighting for tomorrow is an everyday battle. Nathan has a wife, but can’t remember what it’s like to be in love; only his young daughter Zoe makes coming home worthwhile. Miranda’s biggest concern is whether her new VW Bug is big enough to carry her sister and their boyfriends on a weekend escape from college finals.

When reports of a widespread, deadly “outbreak” begin to surface, these ordinary people face extraordinary circumstances

and suddenly their fates are intertwined. Recognizing they can’t outrun the danger, Scarlet, Nathan, and Miranda desperately seek shelter at the same secluded ranch, Red Hill. Emotions run high while old and new relationships are tested in the face of a terrifying enemy – an enemy who no longer remembers what it’s like to be human.

Set against the backdrop of a brilliantly realized apocalyptic world, love somehow finds a way to survive. But what happens when the one you’d die for becomes the one who could destroy you?

My thoughts

Let me start by saying, I had very high expectations for this novel, and  I was  extremely excited about its release. I couldn’t wait to download this audiobook, but  unfortunately, I was left disappointed.

I expected a lot more, and I think it was mostly because I really enjoyed Jamie McGuire’s YA series, Beautiful Disaster – I know she’s capable of  developing strong and engaging characters regardless if you like them or not as people.

Even though I liked the characters in Red Hill, I never really got to the point when I really really cared what happened to them, the whole time I was listening I felt like an outsider, and I never felt the urgency of their situation.

As of now I’m not sure if the author were going for a strong character driven plot or a world driven novel, in either case it didn’t work for me.

The fact that the majority of the novel was spent with the characters trying to get to this place where they would finally  reachsafety didn’t bother me, what bothered me was that I didn’t find  their journey captivating or engrossing, and not once I felt at the edge of my seat, I think a few plot holes had a lot to do with it, I never felt totally convinced.
I also didn’t feel the chemistry between the protagonists, and that’s always a let down for me when it comes to romance.

As a colossal fan of the Walking Dead, this zombies world felt short in every front; nothing new, no brake-through, or impressive twists when it came to the zombies,  frankly I found the plot a bit boring despite finding traces of the writing style I love from Ms. McGuire.

I can see how peeps that are not so deep into the zombie literature might still find this novel entertaining, and paired with this great narration might just do the trick.

You have to take into account  that my point of view is from a big fan of post-apocalyptic novels.

All in all, it wasn’t horrible,  I don’t do horrible, it just felt short from impressing me, and  I can only give the plot a C.

Narration of Red Hill Audiobook    B+ Some times a good narration and interpretation can take an average novel to a higher level, and that’s exactly the case here. I really enjoyed the narrators approach to the characters, and I’m glad I listen to the audiobook because now I have discovered 2 narrators whose work I’m looking forward to seeing more of. Honestly,  I’d have to say that their performances were what enjoyed the most about Red Hill. January LaVoy  was very good at bringing Scarlet to life; I’m really impress with her ability as a narrator – the same goes for Zachary Webber, in fact, I made a point of making a short sample of his performance, take a listen: And last, but not least, Emma Galving, a pro at bringing YA characters in apocalyptic times to life, and she doesn’t disappoint here. Take a listen to a short sample: Ultimately, I think this group of narrators did their best with  the material they were presented, and as far as the narration goes, I was very satisfied.
