Rumor Has it Audiobook

Rumor Has it is the fourth entry in the successful series, Animal Magnetism by Jill Shalvis.
This audiobook was one of the five finalists for The Best Romance Audiobook of 2013, and I have no idea why I kept putting it on the back burner.

I don’t make a habit of jumping in a series out of order; I was a little worried that I would miss something from the previews books. I needed not to worry, within a few minutes I found myself really enjoying this light-hearted, cute, heartwarming and totally fun story.

Forced back to his hometown by an injury acquired while in service, special Ops Griffin Reid never expected to find his sister’s best friend all grown up and turned into a sexy and charismatic woman. And even less, find himself attracted to the slightly nerdy teacher.

Kate Evans can hardly believe that her childhood crush is back in town, and even less, that such of crush still is as alive as ever. She’s not about to miss this chance to see her crush realized even if is only for one night. The girl is determined to take what she wants and live on the edge for a little.

I loved the protagonists! I loved Kate! She’s strong, sweet, sassy when she needs to be and has a heart of gold that makes you root for her happy ending.

Griffin was the perfect hero by his imperfections. A bit tortured by past experiences he needs mending past his physical injuries, and seeing him helping Kate become stronger made him endear to me.

These two made swoon chemistry. The back and forward banter between them is a lot of fun and captured my heart in the process.

From the secondary characters that I want to know more about, to the well-developed and perfectly paced romance, Rumor Has it was a winner for me, and a super entertaining listen.

Narration

It’s not hard to see why Karen White keeps getting all these nominations. She’s excellent at bringing the mood of the novel to life; from a suspenseful scene to a happy, playful scenario, Karen White puts you there.

She’s lets the text dictate the tone of the story, and it would seem obvious, but I know some narrators that don’t do that. Her pace and timing are always on target. Her voice variations are smooth and never jarring. Her performances are skillfully edited; she sounds like she recorded the book in one sitting.

Another one of her strong suits and my favorite it’s the authenticity of her male voices; this is so important in a romance novel, probably more so than any other genre.

And lastly, she sounds like she’s enjoying the book by being 100% into the story, that helps transport the listener to the setting.

For all this, this was another wonderful performance by Karen White. It is now a matter a taste, and how well her voice plays with your ears.
