This is the second book in Alexandria Ivy’s The Agency series. You can read this one without having read the first book, though the hero of the previous book does have a cameo appearance in this story.

Carmen Jacobs has published a best selling true crime book on a few serial killers that she worked on while in college. Then she is off in a remote cottage when someone drops off an envelope of pictures. She’s not sure if it is a prank or if the pictures are real, but they cause her alarm. The cops don’t want to believe her, so she contacts someone she met previously, Griffin Archer.

Griffin has created a program to help law enforcement to find the bad guys. It can be used at every level of law enforcement from local cops to anti-terrorist groups at the national level. He is more than willing to help Carmen Jacobs.

There are also some framily drama issues between Carmen and her father’s family. Her parents died when she was real young, so she went to live with her maternal grandparents. Her grandparents were not a fan of her father’s family, and cut off all contact. There is more to that story too.

Griffin and Carmen go around the country as the investigate what appears to be a series of murders across multiple states. We also get to see their romance build throughout the investigation and more than one life threatening situation. I will say that solving the murder case is more of the plot with romance taking a back seat. I did enjoy the mystery and trying to figure out who all is involved in these murders.

What Are You Afraid Of? Audiobook Narration

4.5 Hearts

Jim Frangione continues to do a great job with the narration of this series. I love his male and female voices. His pace and tone are always exactly right for the scene. He is a great romance narrator that I’ve listened to for years, starting with J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I continue to search out books with him as the narrator. If you haven’t given him a try, I highly recommend him.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. I’m afraid of any book with a title like that! EEP! I just can’t do dark rom-suspense. I need sunshine and unicorns! haha

    • This is a thriller matched with romantic suspense. It is darker than some of the others in the genre. But, then, I love dark stories.

  2. I like that the romance takes a back seat to the murder solving plot. It makes it flow better in my opinion. Sounds like a great series!

    • Me too. I don’t mind romance in my stories, but I tend to read for other reasons (humor, mystery, action, etc).

  3. i have yet to listen to him but he sounds good 🙂

    • I know several people who don’t like them and several more that do. I really like him. He is one of my favorite male narrators.

  4. I keep meaning to pick these up. Definitely in audio because I like his narration work. You tempt me to do it sooner rather than later. 🙂

    • I’m just getting started with this author, but I love this narrator.

  5. I only tried a few Ivy books but some weren’t for me so I haven’t tried a lot more I confess

    • I remember seeing her for the first time for some paranormal books, but I’ve only tried her romantic suspense. That is so weird for me, because I like paranormal better than romantic suspense.

    • I’ve really enjoyed these first two books. She has another romantic suspense series that I listened to two books with this same narrator.

  6. I haven’t read her in a while but I love her books.

    • I’ve not read many, but I’ve really enjoyed the ones that I have.

  7. I hadn’t heard of this series although I have read the author before. The program to help crime fighting sounds different. I also love a good romantic suspense. Glad you are liking this one!

  8. Sounds good Melanie and you can’t go wrong with Jim narrating. He is one of the narrators of JR’s Consumed too!

    • I do love his narrations. The first time I listened to was BDB. I haven’t tried her other series with his narration (just the angel series, which had a different narrator).

  9. Did it get hot and heavy with the couple? I ask because inasmuch as I love a good mystery, I tend to doze off when it’s too romance-centric. With the exception of romcoms & chick lit and even then it’s a struggle, I can’t focus on romance anymore 🙁

    • This has romance, but is more of a suspense/thriller with some romance as a secondary plot. At least in my mind.

  10. This sounds dark and intriguing. Love the narrator’s voice.

  11. Geez, you are just adding to my list!

    • Just returning the favor. You’ve added to my list over the years too. 🙂 <3
