My Thoughts

By Ml Simmons

We are four books into this series. Angel is really on track to make something of herself. She has passed her GED. She loves her job at the morgue. She is helping out at Pietro’s lab and even thinking about going back to school to learn more for this job. Angel and her Dad continue to do well. All the while she is improving herself, she is still the same ol‘ Angel and adding her own flare to everything she does.

In How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back, we have Saberton kidnaps Pietro and blackmails his Congressman girlfriend. There are a lot of questions about why Saberton Corporation and their CEO, Nichole, have such a hatred of zombies. The things that they do to some of their zombie hostages in this book are really just unbelievable.

We really see Angel use her ability to think on her feet and use her street smarts to really help out in a more covert type of operation when she travels with a team to recover the hostages. She proves that it isn’t all brute force and weapons skills that are needed for this type of job. I really think she proves herself and not only increases her self-confidence, but proves herself to the other members of the team who had written her off as a non-player.

We learn additional information on the zombie lore. I’m not sure how I feel about this new bit of information. I just don’t think I like how it comes about and it doesn’t seem realistic. Yes, I’m aware that zombies are not really real, but I just still need to feel that it makes sense in the world that has been built. This just seemed to me to be added to fill some need to “fix” a hole, not because it was originally part of what the author’s idea of the zombie lore should be.

There is a lot of questions that come up in the very last chapter of the book. It really changed a lot about the story and left me wondering where the overall story arc is going. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I will just say that I was not happy about it. That being said, I have faith that Ms. Rowland has a plan and I’m willing to wait it out.

How the White Trash Zombie Got her Groove Back Audiobook Narration

Pink Earphones

White Trash Zombie is one of my favorite series on audio. Allison McLemore does a terrific job with Angel’s voice. She really pulls off that redneck aspect to Angel’s voice with sarcasm to boot. She also is able to handle the non-Southern voices and is great with both men and women’s voices. This series will be an autobuy audio on release day for a while to come.

  1. As you know, I was not happy with the ending either. And, some of Rowland’s additions to her zombie lore really made me go WTF. Loved the narration & Angel, but I’m still not sold on the story. Your review pretty much sums up exactly how I felt about this audiobook. πŸ™‚

    • I loved the covert mission and seeing Angel show her street smarts. I was not a fan of the zombie lore change or the last chapter in general, but as I said, I have faith in Rowland. I will wait and see. Narration was out of the park as always.

  2. I really like this series on audio as well. I’m not sure I would enjoy it as much if I read it. The narration is just so good.

I’ve grabbed my copy already. The last book was good but it was a little slow for me. So I’m waiting until I’m in mood to start this one.

    • I felt that this one has more action than book three. Angel really comes into her own in this one.

I started off reading this series before listening. Now I go straight to audio.

  3. I was a little bummed with this one, I don’t know why I didn’t like it nearly as much as its predecessors :(. The plot failed to grab me like it normally does. I’m glad you enjoyed it more than I did πŸ™‚ I love Angel!
I totally agree, the narration is TOP NOTCH!

    • I was doing okay with it until the last chapter where some things happen that I was really not happy with. I was also not a fan of the new piece of zombie lore that was added. I loved seeing Angel really prove that she was more than just a stupid “hick” to all of those operatives in the Tribe. I think she really proved herself. Curious to see where things are going with Andrew, Nick and Gentry.

  4. Uh oh! Now you have me worried about that ending! I haven’t had time to listen yet, but now I’m really curious as to where things are going. Thanks for sharing!

    • Have faith. I’m sure it will all work out in the end. Think of it as a cliffhanger. That is how I’m looking at it. It will turn around. I’m sure of it.

  5. I have book of this series in audio but have not listened to it yet so I skimmed your review since I want to go in blind but your rating is enough for me to know that I should definitely try this one out. I live zombies and this series just sounds so original!

    • This is a great zombie series with a very original heroine. The narration is a great match for the series. I hope you enjoy.

  6. Still need to catch up on this series. I think I’m on book 2!

    • This series on audio is a preorder for me. I just love Angel so much.

  7. I loved the sample you provided!! The accent: Perfectly-perfect!
I was at Books a Million a few weeks ago & they had the first 3 books in this series for sale (it was a buy 1 get 1 for 50% off deal) Had they had book 4 I would of splurged.
I am kickin myself now. I had no clue as to how I’d feel about this series so I hesitated and missed out.
I am going to get book 1 asap, but I am debating-audio or book. Ill hit up Amazon & see whats what.
BTW I flippin love the background of your site. Perfect!

    • Thanks. Personally, I have switched entirely to listening to this series. I started off reading the book, but once I listened to the audio, I had to stay with the audio version. The narrator is just perfect for this series. I hope you get a chance to try it soon.

  8. Ugh, I’ve wanted to read the 1st book since foooorever. This is a series that I WILL read.

    • I hope you get a chance to start soon. I think you would enjoy.

  9. Hmmm I may need to pick up book one! (I’m totally digging that title). Sorry things ended a bit grrrr but glad to see even with that it was a good read for ya! Hope the next one turns that last little bit around for ya πŸ™‚

    • I’m sure it will turn around. I have faith that the author knows what she is doing. I hope you get a chance to try out this series. Angel is one great character.

  10. Thanks for the great review. I just can’t seem to like Zombie novels. I know I must be the only one out there left who doesn’t. Is there one in particular you could suggest I try to maybe get me into this genre?

    • Thanks, Debbie. This is the only zombie series I read, so I’m not able to help you. I’ve never tried other zombie books. I don’t know why.

  11. oh that’s nice! you know I’m really really late in this series like I have book 1 and I need to read it lol, like now, it would be great.

    • This is a great series. Angel is such an original character. The story is very unique too. I hope you get chance to start soon.

  12. This is another series that I haven’t read (b/c zombies, LOL), but I have to admit that I’ve been curious. SO many people think this is a great series, and well, we usually agree on books. I’m sorry that you got thrown for a loop at the end of this one. I hate it when the author suddenly changes things and, oh, look at that, no more book. I’ve read some of Rowland’s Kara Gillian series (another reason that I’m curious despite the zombies), so I understand your confidence that it’ll work out. I’ll be watching πŸ˜‰

    • This is the only zombie series that I’ve read. I picked it up because I loved Rowland’s demon series. I have to say, I like this one better. As far as the ending to this book, I’m looking at it as a cliffhanger. I have faith that Rowland will come back in the next book and work her way through this. She is a great author and has yet to disappoint me in the long run. I hope you get a chance to try it. I think you would like it, especially on audio.

  13. The narration is amazing but I actually DNF’d this one. πŸ™ I just couldn’t force myself to listen anymore I was bored out of my MIND!

    • I’m sorry to hear that. There are some spots that probably could’ve been made shorter, especially when they were traveling to New York and when they first arrive in the Big Apple.

  14. This is a series I have wanted to try, maybe I should go audio since I have been enjoying them so much lately.

    • You totally should. McLemore really adds to the story. I hope you enjoy.

  15. I really want to give this series a try, the covers are always amazing and I’ve been seeing some pretty good reviews on it as a whole. Hopefully one of these days πŸ˜€

    • I hope you get a chance and enjoy it. The covers are great, aren’t they?

  16. I was going to start this series, but now I’m not so sure. I hate it when series go a little downhill.

Great review though! And thanks for the heads up

    • I personally didn’t this this book was that bad. It was my least favorite of the series, but still good over all. I was not happy with a few things that happened at the very end, but I think that is because the author is billing for something in the next book. I hope you get a chance to try this series, especially on audio because the narrator rocks.
