Best Audiobook Player App for Smartphones

Best Audiobook applications for listening on a Smartphone

Best Audiobook Player App for Android and iPhone

I have recommended the following applications to many of my friends that wanted to listen their Audiobooks that they either bought as a CD or as MP3 CD  after they had transfered to  their Smartphone.

They all wanted to find and Audiobook player that would allow them the same features that Audible application has, like: Speed up, sleep timer and keeping the Audiobooks organized.
I have tried many applications; some were OK, but I considered these two the best.

A few years back, I was thrilled to find SpeedUp for my Iphone (thanks to Angela at UTC).

After switched to Samsung I found what I consider the best application in the market today, The Smart Audiobook Player.

So I thought it would be a good idea to share with you the features of each application. I know many of you accept Audiobooks for review, and you might be wondering what’s the best way to listen to those books that are sent you as  regular MP3 or Wav  download files.

I will assume you already know how to transfer your MP3 books to your phone, and that you’re familiar with the App Dropbox to accomplish that.
If you don’t know how to use Dropbox, here is a good video tutorial on how to use it.

By now there might be other applications for the iPhone  that can do a better job, but I a haven’t found one as complete as the Smart Audiobook Player for the iPhone yet…Hopefully  they publish one in the near future.

  1. This is great! I still use an iPod most of the time, but it doesn’t offer the speed options that many of the apps do. I was familiar with Smart Audiobook, but since I have an iPhone, that didn’t help me. I even asked the developer if he had any plans to create an iPhone app, but alas, he doesn’t know how to code for that. Good to know that there is something out there for us iPhone users. Thanks. 😀

    • I’ve tried to look for more complete app for the iPhone, but I couldn’t find one. And to be honest I was shocked that selection for android devices was a lot bigger. I’m going back to Iphone in a few weeks, now that they have a big screen…LOL so I’ll be looking around more carefully for a better app.
I use the smart audiobook player for all the other books I don’t buy on audible.

  2. I am having trouble with this. I have the Smart Audiobook player, but when I download an MP3 book from my computer it only plays on my Google Music player as a song. Grr. I need to take a tutorial on transferring and formatting them or something

    • maybe I’ll post a detailed Tutorial and how to transfer the books and start playing them – But if you look for your file folder on your phone, and then go to downloads – there you can make a new folder with the audiobook’s name, download the book into that folder. The app should find it right away. You should see it on your library. Maybe you have to un-install the app and re- install it to start from scratch. As soon as you open the App for the first time, you have to point it to the folder where your books are – I always make a new folder with the books name and I deleted when I’m done so I don’t have all that space taking out with books I already listened to.
I hope this helps a little bit for now, don’t hesitate to ask me if you have any questions.

  3. I love this post! I’ve tried both of these and liked them, but have you heard of or tried Listen Audiobook Player? I LOVE it! It’s only for android. It’s so easy to add your books, you can download cover art, tons of speed options, bookmarking, blah blah blah. My favorite feature is the fact that it adjust the playback time depending on what speed you listen to (if you want that option). Oh and you can personalize the appearance of your library and menu and colors and stuff. I love this app!

    • Are you talking about Listen Audiobook Player? I downloaded a long time ago, over a year ago, but it didn’t have all those features then, and I had trouble with the rewinding and the book skipping when I got notifications. If this is the one you talking about, I can re-download from my Google account, I think I paid 0.99c then..lol – Let me know if that’s the one, I’d love it with all those new features 🙂 If that’s not the one I’ll appreciate if you can send me the link to the one you’re talking about. Thanks Nereyda!!

      • Yup, that’s the one! I paid $.99 for it too and it was just okay at first and buggy. But they went through a major update in the last 3 months or so and now it has some really cool features. I like it way better than the audible app 🙂

  4. Thanas Loupe! I have a Samsung too so this will help immensely 🙂 i have audible, but I’m glad there are alternatives.

  5. I use Smart Audiobook player for the ones I bought on Tantor, love it. Sad that it switched me to basic after a month, need to figure out how to pay to get the full features. Will try out the other you suggested too 😀

    • It’s worth the 2 bucks Lily! I use it for Tantor books too!! Their audio App leaves a lot to be desired..lol SpeepUp pro is only for Iphone, but I’m waiting On Nereyda, she seems to have tried another app for android that sound really good too. I might be cheaper and better. I’m always open to better…LOL

  6. I’m relieved to see that you haven’t changed your iPhone app recommendation because I’m still using SpeedUp Player Pro thanks to you. I might be upgrading my phone shortly though, so I’ll have to remember this post if I decide to switch to Android. As usual, thanks for doing all of the legwork for us slackers. Hehe! You make listening to audiobooks SO much easier. 😀

    • I’m going back to iPhone at the end of this month, I’m waiting for my new phone..But I have to say, Samsung is pretty awesome, I’m really going to miss it, but since I have everything apple I though I should go back and check out the big screen…bugs and all..LOL So if I find something better for it I’ll let you know right away.

  7. I use the Smart Audiobook Player too, but haven’t listened to anything besides Audible in the last little while. I tried a bunch of others before I found Smart and hated them. I’m interested to hear if that Listen Audiobook app is as good!

    • Last one I used for was a review book. Audible still my #1 – God knows I spent enough in their store..LOL But I also use a lot for Tantor audiobooks and ambling books. I’m already trying the Listen Audiobook app and it’s pretty awesome so far and very easy to use. They have come a long way.

  8. I totally love the Smart Audiobook player – it doesn’t speed up as well as Audible does but they must do something special to their files to allow for that level of speeding up. I normally listen to audible ones on 2x but I can barely handle 1.4x on Smart Audio player. But hey any bit of speeded up helps.

that folder making thing really through me back when i first got the app!

    • Nereyda informed me that an old application has undergone major upgrades and they have added new features, so I re-donwloaded back yesterday and so far I love what I’ve seen. I haven’t listen to any books on it yet to check out their speed options, but they offer the same as the audible App. from 0.5 to 3X. And it’s only $0.99 🙂 I’ll let you know how I feel about it, but like I said earlier, I’m always open to better 😉

  9. I am so lazy… I just use iTunes for my audiobooks on my phone. And I am unable to listen to audiobooks at a faster speed, maybe when I get more used to it I will find it to be easier.
Thanks for sharing your fave apps, Loupe 🙂

    • You’re welcome Lexxie 🙂 And honestly, sometimes some books are better at faster speed, specially when you dealing with a narrator that haven’t mastered their breathing and you can hear them inhale every time they start a sentence 🙁

  10. I was using Audible to listen to MP3 audiobooks. I just had to change certain things in the info of the audio for it to recognize it as an audiobook and didn’t have a problem with it afterwards. Still, I’m downloading SpeedUp. You recommended it, that’s all I need to know.

  12. Try to use MP3 Audiobook Player! Clean and useful interface. Support MP3 and M4B audiobooks. Timer, bookmarks, remote control, control center on iOS7+.

    • Awesome! I’ve been looking for something better OS7 since I went back to the iphone, can it add book covers? Any how, downloading right now, if it works I’ll make a post about it, or if you have time, maybe you’d like to make guest post and tell us all about it 🙂
      Thank you.

Every book presented as folder in Documents of application. If you add single one or more files – application automaticaly sorted files to folders titled from meta-tags from file. If audiofile have image in meta-tags – this image extracted as book cover.
If all files in book not have images – you can manually add cover image. Simply upload image to folder of book – image will be used as cover image.
