Immortal: A Fallen Angels Novel

My Thoughts
MLSimmos

This review is going to be somewhat vague. I don’t want to give away any spoilers to anyone who is still planning on reading this series.

This is the sixth and final book in the Fallen Angel series, which was a bit of a spinoff from Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. We start off this series right where we left off with the end of book five. In this book, we have Jim’s final two tests in the war between good and evil. Davina is up a win, so everything is on the line.

Immortal is exactly what you would expect from a J.R. Ward book and falls right in line with the rest of this series. You still have tons of pop culture references, speech that doesn’t quite fit the characters, and brand name dropping. Nothing anymore than we’ve had with all of her books, so you shouldn’t be surprised.

The biggest surprise to me was the entire series timeline is only about six weeks long. I guess while reading, I always thought that the timeline was longer. I was really surprised to hear that it had been less than three months since Jim’s original death.

Sissy has a very large part in this book, as she is the sixth soul that Jim is set to save. Adrian and Jim are trying to keep her out of the war, but she wants no part of that. She wants to help, even though she doesn’t know she is the soul to be saved. After Jim obsessing over her for the past few books and losing more than one win because of her distraction. Jim and Sissy finally get together and it is remarkably tame for Ward.

Overall, I think this book wrapped up the series pretty well. There are several questions that are answered. We see more than one happy ever after. Pretty much all the recurring characters have plenty of page time, especially Adrian. I don’t think this is the last we will see of some of the characters from this series. Ward has pretty much left it open for some to make an appearance in the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Immortal Audiobook Narration

My Review

Eric Dove has narrated all of the Fallen Angels books. He does a good job and I’ve enjoyed his narration from the beginning. I started this series on audio, so he is pretty much the voice of Jim, Adrian, Davina and the gang. I think is pace and emotion are done well. There are on a handful of women that are ongoing in this series, Davina, Sissy and Davina’s therapist. Davina has a very sultry voice which Dove does well.

Sissy has a much more naive voice, but as a young virgin, it seems to work for her. He also does the stuffy Nigel, Collin and the other archangels well. You are never guessing who is talking, as he does a great job with separating the voices of each characters.

  1. I haven’t tried this series neither the other but I keep hearing amazing things about the author and I really should try one for hers mainly as I have some.

    • Between the her two series, I like the Black Dagger Brother more than this one, but then vampires. I hope you enjoy them.

  2. I did not know that this was the last book. I read the first three, and I have 4 and 5 in paperback, but now that it’s finished, I’ll have to get back on the wagon. I’m glad it ended well for you, and I’m always happy when an author leaves a possibility of future appearances. Thanks for the heads-up!

    • Yes, Jim has to save souls six and seven in this book. Not everything is wrapped up, but I think that is because those involved will be in BDB. The ones that are not appearing to move forward do seem to wrap up well. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

  3. Oh wow I didn’t realize this was it. I still have the last 2 to read I think. Or one maybe? Hrm. I need to go digging in my shelves! So glad it wrapped up nicely. I’m always nervous about that these days.

    • Yea, I thought there was going to be one more, but Jim has to save two souls in this book. I’m always worried about the ending of the series. I’ve seen it done badly a few times. The last few I’ve seen have been done really well.

  4. I only read your review diagonally, Melanie… Since I got my copy this week, I didn’t want to be spoiled in any way. I’m glad you enjoyed it! And I can’t wait to dig in myself 🙂

    • I think you will be happy. It is a typically Ward book, and pretty much everything wraps up well. I hope you enjoy.

  5. I’m listening to this one now Melanie, and I had forgotten how Eric G. Grove is the perfect fit for this series. He sure gives these novels the right ambiance.
I’m only on chapter 2, but I can see how I’ll be glued to my phone until TWD..LOL

    • He is perfect for this series. I hope you enjoy.

  6. Whew! I can breathe better coz if it’s bad then I won’t read it til next year maybe.

Gosh I want ot know how Davina is doing. I’m sure Jim won and it’s the HOW that’s interesting. I do hate her label drops, is she getting paid for advertising? Psh!

    Thanks, Melanie!

    • At one point she mentions twice about Jim’s Hanes T-shirt. My thought, I don’t know what brand of jeans he is wearing, can I move forward with the story without knowing the brand of jeans. LOL

I think you’ll be happy with the ending.

  7. I think I got up to book three in this series…gotta pick it back up becuase I really like it. Great review 🙂

    • Thanks. I’ve enjoyed the series, even if I like BDB better. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

  8. I have this one on my TBR, still need to catch up on these though. I think I’ve read book one and two, will probably have to reread those though. Glad to see it wrapped up nicely.

    • It was a good ending to the series, and we will see some of my favorite characters in BDB, which is nice too.

  9. Oh wow! An entire series in just 6 weeks? That must be 6 action packed weeks! I haven’t started this series yet – I actually have only read the first Black Dagger book so far, so I have some catching up to do! But I’m looking forward to it 🙂 Great review!

    • Thanks. It doesn’t read like time is moving that fast, or at least I didn’t realize it. It is a good series, but I like BDB better, cause Vampires. I hope you enjoy.

  10. I found this series to be much darker than BDB when I first picked it up and enjoyed the first book but wasn’t too crazy about book #2. I kind of put this series to the side and never finished it. My sister actually read it and said it gets better. I bought all the books so I do plan on continuing the series! I didn’t realize she was only writing 6 of these, I like a short series so I might read these sooner than I thought. Great review Melanie!

    • Thanks, Lori. I had thought it would be at least seven book, because of seven souls he has to save. Jim has to save two souls in this last book. I don’t like this series as much as BDB, but I thought it was pretty good. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

  11. I have her Black Dagger series on my wishlist. Which should I do first? It sounds like this has a lot of action since you were surprised by the timeline.

    • Personally, I like BDB better. Although, this series is technically a spinoff series, you can read it without reading the other first. However, this series is really short with only six books, BDB is has 12 books out with a lot more on the way. I like both series on audio, so that is an option, if you want to try listening or reading. I hope you enjoy.

  12. thanks for the great review, I have this one in print and as soon as I can devote 500 or so pages to my pleasure reads it’s mine.
I love this series, love that it spins off BDB love Ward!

    • Thanks. I hope you enjoy how the series ends. From reading the transcripts of the signing, it will be a few books before we see them.

  13. I swear, I don’t know if I’ll ever get to this series. I want to, but damn. One day, maybe.

    • This is a series that isn’t for everyone. I know several people who didn’t like it. Maybe one day you’ll be in the mood for something like this. I highly recommend it on audio. I found that the narration helped me with this series.

  14. I always assumed this series was paranormal romance…I think I might have the first few but have never picked them up. Maybe this winter.

    • I think it kinda straddles the line. It has the feel of UF, but it does have a HEA couple for each book. I’ve seen it listed both ways. Don’t know which is correct.

    • I thought it was a fitting end to the series. I hope you enjoy.

  15. I didn’t realize that this was a BGB spin-off, but at least Ward wrapped up the story line after six installments instead of 12+. Still, most reviews mention that her angels are no where near as good as her brothers, so it’s doubtful that I’ll ever make time for this series.

    • Yeah, the heroine in the first book was actually Marie-Terese who was the head hooker at the Iron Mask. It takes place near Caldwell. We see de la Cruz and Xhex cross paths with characters in the story. I agree it isn’t as good as BDB, but there are only six books in the series, so not a hard task to complete.

  16. I have the first 3 books that I need to start. Should I read BDB first though?? I have had mixed opinions about this series. I enjoyed your review 🙂

    • Thanks. There is a small amount of character overlap, but so far, you can read/listen to either series without the other. Start with which ever series you want. You’ll be fine either way. I hope you enjoy.

  17. I gave up on this series after second book. I don’t know if I’ll read the following books, but knowing there are only four books left is an incentive… someday.

    • I know a lot of people gave up on this series. I’ve enjoyed it. I hope that the fact that the series is short will convenience people to come back and give it another try.

  18. Hmm…interesting review. I haven’t read this series at all so I have no real input, but I’m glad that it manages to gain high ratings even so further along in the series. Usually they go downhill for me 🙂

    • It’s a pretty good series. Some stories are better than others, but overall, I would say that the series holds it’s own until the end. I’ve read some series that go downhill. Some I keep reading with the hopes that they will pick back up, others I’ve given up on.

  19. Immortal just might be my favorite cover so far-love it! I picked up book one at one time but just didn’t get into it. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the series as a whole. I was surprised by the six week timeline and six books in the series. That gives me hope that I can try to pick it up again one day 😉

    • It does help to know that a series is shorter to get it moved up that TBR pile. I know some series that are long and I just think that adding just one series adds so many books to my already too large TBR list. I hope you enjoy.
