I could smell her fear, and it satisfied something deep inside me that had been writhing under her cool, superior gaze. I curled my upper lip so she could get a good look at my sharp teeth. I might only weigh thirty or so pounds in my coyote shape, but I was a predator…Mechanic Mercy Thompson can shift her shape – but not her loyalty. When her former boss and mentor is arrested for murder and left to rot behind bars by his own kind, it’s up to Mercy to clear his name, whether he wants her to or not.

Mercy’s loyalty is under pressure from other directions, too. Werewolves are not known for their patience, and if Mercy can’t decide between the two she cares for, Sam and Adam may make the choice for her.

Love this series. This was a hard one for me to rate, as I did not like so many things that happened to our headstrong little coyote heroine, Mercy, when she is called upon to repay a favor to the Fae. Yet, they were dealt with a deft and subtle hand. Nevertheless, don’t kid yourself! That won’t make them have any less poignancy on impact.

Ms. Briggs has a gift for telling a story simply, while managing to get a tenacious hold on the reader’s (or listener’s, as the case may be) complex emotions. She imbues her protagonist with compassion, courage, dignity, and a strength that inspires readers. All in all a wonderful storyteller and, though I may step away from the series right now, I know I’ll eventually continue on. Once I get over the shock and anger. Yes, actually, I was pissed.

Does every urban fantasy I pick up have to have rape in it, eventually? Once I calmed down, I realized how well it was all written. It wasn’t until composing this review that I cried.

I have every confidence that Patricia Briggs will handle the aftermath as well as she did that horrible incident. Then again, maybe I should jump right into the next adventure to experience more of Mercy’s indomitable spirit. See my rating dilemma?

Ms. King does a wonderful job of reading Native American “Walker”* Mercy’s POV in this third installation of the Mercedes Thompson series. She does a nice job on differentiating the voices; but more than that, I can’t help but feel she speaks for Mercy.
