When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she doesn’t think it’s love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her:

Never ask about the past.

Don’t expect a future.

They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.
Hearts get infiltrated.

Promises get broken.

Rules get shattered.

Love gets ugly.

My Thoughts

Ugly Love is just that! Ugly… There are all kinds or romance stories; some make us warm, some make us hot, some make us giggle with their humor, but some, like Ugly Love, reminds us that some stories are not easy, that love doesn’t just happen, you have to let it happen -and how past experiences can have direct consequences that shape our present.

Ugly Love is Miles and Tate’s love story…And just as the title suggests is not a pretty story, although and so many ways I found it to be beautiful.

I absolutely loved, loved how the story unfolds; in a brilliant and very original way we get taken through two love stories, one from 6 years ago, narrated by Miles, while at the same time, we get Tate’s story set in the present.

We all know that when we fall and we fall hard we will greedily take anything the object of our affection can offer us. Unfortunately for Tate, Miles can’t offer much; he doesn’t have much to give (or so he thinks).
In many instances, you would find the cold attitude that Mile displays towards Tate a little harsh, but this is where this story is ingeniously written.

Yes, I have listened to my share of damaged heroes. Heroes that in one way of another get redeemed in the end, but I never have listened to a story that let us simultaneously experience the present while getting privy to the past that have forced our hero to close his heart. While his story was unfolding, I wasn’t sure which one was the true love story in the book. I Loved this!

By getting Miles point of view, and by him taking us through his past experiences it gives us the understanding that his heart was once full; his story is beautiful and heart-breaking. We can easily see why he’s so afraid to love again.

I can’t blame Tate for falling so quickly for Miles or for braking the rules so clearly  established , I did too! And I would had too!  I love Miles’ reserved and guarded ways, and by getting his story I realized that he was the kind of man worth fighting for-and that it’s precisely what the smart and beautiful, Tate does.

Hard love is passionate and urgent, and we clearly get that in their sexy encounters.

To see how love can conquer all, as cliché as this might sound, made Ugly Love an endearing love story for me, I love listening to this book! And if you’re a fan of realistic, down to earth, and genuine love tales, with credible and likable characters, you must let Miles and Tate tell you their story.

Colleen Hoover Author

Author Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover’s love for writing began in 1985 when she was five years old. Her first story was titled “Mystery Bob” and was a huge hit with her mother, who was really good at faking interest.
Colleen continued to write short stories for friends and family until December of 2011, when she decided to write a long story she titled, “Slammed.” She self-published SLAMMED to Amazon in January, 2012 and it hit the NYT’s bestsellers list in May, 2012. She has since signed with Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, and now has six NYT’s bestsellers. Colleen prefers to be called a writer, as the term “author” still terrifies her and makes this feel like a job with expectations. She doesn’t work well under pressure and hopes writing will always remain fun and exciting.
Colleen’s newest novel, UGLY LOVE, releases August 5th, 2014. She is currently working on a new novel, CONFESS, which she is writing as fast as she can before she wakes up from this crazy dream.

Ugly Love Audiobook Narration by Grace Grant & Deacon Lee

First we have Grace Grant, an already favorite of mine with her interpretation of the Inside Out trilogy, and just as she did in that series, she once again fleshes out the raw emotions in this novel.

Tate’s personality is quickly established, and the result is very likable female lead, that despite being put in a situation where she was at a disadvantage when it came to love, doesn’t translate into a doormat kind of girl.

I clearly got her determination and maturity. Her inner struggles are clearly felt and transmitted to the listener, and you just want to root for her happy ending.
Her interpretation of Miles was excellent, I clearly got his detached and guarded personality.

All in all, I love her narration!!

Then, we have Deacon Lee, and WOW!

Ugly Love is my second experience with his work, and he’s quickly climbing to the top of my list of favorites.

Without tumbling into melodrama in a rich and warm voice, Deacon Lee excels at bringing the deep and raw emotions, as well as, the heart-wrenching moments in Mile’s story.
He’s playful tone at the beginning of his story quickly degenerates into the tortured hero we encounter in the present. His portrayal of Miles was nothing short of perfect!!

I love this narration, and I know, as much as these books have already some great rating, that their performance had a lot to do with my enjoyment of this story.

A lot of stories are a lot less ugly when they are beautifully portrayed.
