This is a revisit for me. I read the series back in 2015, but when it was offered on audio, I decided that I wanted to revisit the series. I’m a fan of this series. I love how this series tackles hard topics, but adds humor too.

In this story, Lauren is a human living in a mostly shifter community. Her best friend is married to the mayor, but he thinks he’s above the law. He beats her, but Lauren won’t allow it. She goes after the mayor. She’s not scared of his power. That’s when deputy and werebear enforcer Van Abrams shows up to break up the dispute.

Van hates humans. He makes no bones about it. He has no use for them. That is until he meets Lauren. He learns that she is his true mate. He must learn to overcome is prejudice. She catches him saying some horrible things about humans, but then he explains that isn’t how he feels about her, just her people. You can imagine how that goes.

Someone is trying to kill Lauren. The mayor is trying to cover up his abuse as his wife finally leaves him. Oh, and there are issues with the wolf pack and their hatred of the hyenas.

This story tackles several hard issues like men in power and how they think they are above the law. There is also the species version of racism against humans and hyenas. The bears have their reasons for that hatred, but they must learn that just because there are bad humans and hyenas, doesn’t mean that they’re all bad. The story of why Van hates humans is a real heartbreaker. It made me tear up and hate those humans too.

Again, I really enjoyed Kendall Taylor’s narration. She handles this cast of mostly bear males really well. I thought she really brought out the emotion in the story, when Lauren goes after the mayor and Van telling his heartbreaking story. I will be on the lookout for more stories narrated by her.

Ex-dance teacher, former accountant and erstwhile collectible doll salesperson, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Celia Kyle now writes paranormal romances for readers who:

1) Like super hunky heroes (they generally get furry)

2) Dig beautiful women (who have a few more curves than the average lady)

3) Love laughing in (and out of) bed.

It goes without saying that there’s always a happily-ever-after for her characters, even if there are a few road bumps along the way. Today she lives in central Florida and writes full-time with the support of her loving husband and two finicky cats.

My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.
