If you’re not reading or familiar with this series, it features mostly angels, archangels and vampires. However, Naasir is something other. He does have traits of vampires. He drinks blood, but he also has an animalistic quality to him that makes you realize that he isn’t a normal vampire. He is a very powerful individual and part of Raphael’s Seven. Raphael, is the archangel of New York and he has his Seven which consists of vampires and angels that are very powerful and his most trusted advisors and inner circle.

In Archangel’s Shadows, we really get to know Naasir, but not really what he is. So finally getting to read his story, I was excited to finally learn that story. Surprisingly, I was able to get the audiobook, after release date, and listen to it and was never spoiled by the elusive information. I saw several tweets #WhatIsNaasir. I saw several people say they knew what he was, but never spoiled it for me. For that, I thank all the early reader.

Anyway, I should probably tell you about our heroine, because she was wonderful too. Andromeda is the only granddaughter Charisemnon, who is allied with Lijuan, a mortal enemy of Raphael, and truthfully, anyone with any sanity. Andromeda left her homeland when she was still very young in angel years to study at the Refuge. She is now a scholar. Naasir is tasked with taking her to find the sleeping place of an ancient archangel before Lijuan can kill him. This is when Naasir learns that Andi, as he calls her, is going to be his mate. She is not only a scholar, but she has learned to fight and has done so in secret. She is quite the warrior.

One large plot point in this story is that Andromeda has made a vow of chastity until a “stupid grimoire book” is found. This does up the sexual tension of the book. Andromeda is ready to break the vow, but Naasir won’t let her. He makes it a point that he is going to find this “stupid grimoire book” so that he can be with his mate.

Overall, I would say this book was everything that I hoped it would be, and I had high hopes. Naasir is just such a wonderful character in his uniqueness. I was very worried that this story couldn’t live up to my expectations, but I shouldn’t have been. Nalini Singh has always delivered. Andromeda is the perfect angel to mate with Naasir. She is intelligent and she sees Naasir for who he is. There are some great plot developments in the overall story plot.

Archangel’s Enigma Narration

Justine Eyre nails the narration of this series once again. Each character has their own unique voice and tone. I think she does a great job bringing out the wildness in Naasir’s voice. I love how she did the accent for Lijuan. I sorta cringe when she is talking, which totally fits that character.

Nalini Singh born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated frequently).

So far, I’ve worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer’s mill.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. I can’t believe this series is up to book 8!!! I’m a little behind, I really enjoyed the first few books but took a break and never got around to reading the others, it’s one of my fave UD series because it’s a little different from my usual vamps and weres. Glad this was a good listen Melanie, I’ll have to move these up my list and get caught up!!

    • For me, this series just keeps getting better and better. The overall story are is so strong, than even when I haven’t loved the main couple (which isn’t often), I still love the overall story.

  2. Oh man, I think I’m on book 4 or 5 haha I need to catch up. Great review Melanie 🙂

    • It is such a fun series. So unique. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

  3. I’m getting so far behind but I’m thrilled that it’s still 5 stars at #8!

    • This is a series that gets better as it goes. It feels more UF than PNR. The story arc for the series is so well developed it keeps the series going strong.

  4. I loved this one, too. I couldn’t wait to find out what Naasir’s race was and what his backstory would be. He was written so well in a way that was interesting and unique from the others.

Oh my, that’s neat that the narrator got Lijuan’s voice so well that it was scary. 🙂

    • Yes, the narrator really changed up Lijuan’s voice after the injuries which made her sound so much creepier. She did such a great job.

  5. I want to read this series so bad. Hell, I want to read any of her books.

    • You can’t go wrong with either of her paranormal series. I haven’t tried her rock star series yet.

  6. YAASSS!! I loved this, too! It was definitely everything I’d hope for. *whispers* I think I may have even liked it more than Janvier and Ashwani’s book o.O Naasir and Andromeda were just so much fun. Great review, Melanie! I’m glad you weren’t disappointed 😉

    • I know, this series just keeps getting better. I don’t know how she does it.

  7. Thanks Melanie this is one author I really need to read!!!

    • I just love her. I highly recommend either of her paranormal series. I haven’t tried her rock star series yet, but I love the two paranormal series.

  8. Oh lord this series looks good too..I might just go audio for this series. Should I switch to audio for Psy as well?

    • I like the audio for the Psy series, there are others who don’t like it. I’ve been audio only for the past four or five books. I think both series are equally good. If I’m recommending for people to start Nalini Singh, I tell them to pick by if they want to read angels/vamps or shifters. you can’t go wrong with either series.

  9. Finding out “what is” Naasir wasn’t ever something that seemed important to me. I guess I had kind assumed what he was and I was mostly correct. For me, the magic of the book was going from seeing Naasir as childlike in the previous book to a male worthy of his mate in this one. Nalini did a fabulous job with his character development!

I’ll have to try this series in audio someday. I’ve heard the narrator is really good from a couple people now.

    • I had an idea of what Naasir was, but hearing about it was an amazing story. Nalini does wonderful character development, it is one of the things I like most about her stories. I do love the audios for both paranormal series.

  10. I’m listening to this right now, Melanie, and I’m loving it! Didn’t really read your review, but I can see that you loved it 🙂
    Have a fantastic week!

    • I completely understand. I usually skim or just look at ratings for a book I’m reading or planing to read. I hop you enjoy it as much as I did. I loved Naasir and his story. Loved the additional story arc too.

  11. This is one of those authors who was on my TBR list forever, and I finally read Slave to Sensation earlier this year. If her narrators are good, I may switch to the audio to get caught up sooner.

    Great review! 🙂

    • I love the narration for both of her paranormal series, though I will admit that I like this narrator a little more than Psy/Changeling narrator. I go straight to audio for both series. I hope you enjoy.
