I was very excited to get back into the world of ARES Security and the brothers of a sort that run it. This series follows five guys who became friends while in a Taliban prison. They endured hell which has made them closer than brothers could ever be. Now they all use their skills to keep the people in America safe from other Americans.

Lucas St. Clair came from an elite family. They expected him to one day run for government. His family has very strict rules for how a family should be and how one should present itself. Lucas wants nothing to do with that. He got really tired of his family always frowning at everything he wanted. Now he just wants to do his job with his friends. He isn’t happy when he is drawn back into town when a old friend from high school is killed. Tony was not only dead, but he was found with a picture of Lucas’s old girlfriend, Mia.

Mia is very much blue collar girl. She grew up in the wrong part of Louisiana swamps. She was very embarrassed by her alcoholic father and trashy yard. Even when she was in school, she knew that she wasn’t good enough for Lucas (even though Lucas didn’t believe that for a moment). Now, she is all grown up and has taken her father’s lawn mowing business and turned it into a very successful landscaping business.

This story has a great mystery in how they go about trying to figure out who killed Tony. There is also some great investigation in how some other people are tied to this case. In addition to Lucas and Mia, there is a romance between two secondary characters, Max the detective and Taylor, and single mother that works for Mia in the office.

While I’m a really big fan of reading a series in order, those of you that are not bothered by reading out of order can start with this book. The story is mostly stand alone and I think Ms. Ivy does a great job of bringing in the details you need for that were given in the first book. If you like a romantic suspense/murder mystery, this is a great choice.

I’m a huge fan of Jim Frangione. I started listening to him with Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I’ve been very pleased with several books that i’ve listened to since I first found him. I will mention that I felt a little bit like I was back in the BDB world at the beginning of this book with the characters talking “shitkickers” and saying “True that.” Luckily, that didn’t stick around for long and I was back in the headspace for ARES. I’ve known some people who don’t like Frangione’s women’s voices, but I don’t mind them. I do like him for alpha male type characters. I also think he is great with pace and tone.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  3. Sometimes I like reading series that you don’t have to read in order. This sounds like a good one. I will seee about the audio versions via my library.

    • I’m pretty anal about reading books in order, but it is nice when you don’t have to. I hope you library has this one. It is from Recorded Books, which is usually pretty easy for libraries to get.

  4. Sounds good, yet to read this author but heard good things! 🙂 Great review!

    • This is my first series by this author. I’ve wanted to try her for a while. I really enjoyed her.

  5. I’ve read two of her series and loved them and meant to get to this one as it released, but couldn’t squeeze it in. Now I’m kicking myself. I love how you describe the characters and the mystery and the brotherhood of guys. Glad you got an old fav narrator for the series, too.

    • I hope you’ll be able to get to this one at some point. It has been a fun series so far.

  6. Even though I like reading them in order as well, it is nice to have series done sometimes as stand alone reads as well. Great review for this, it sounds like a fun series.

    • I hope you get a chance to try this one. It has been a fun series so far. Second chance romances aren’t something I go looking for, but I don’t mind them depending on how they’re written (why the split up, etc).

  10. I ws a bit disappointed by the book I read by her but I need to try another novel!

    • This is the only series that I’ve tried by her. She had been on my TBR for a while. I’m glad that I started with this series. I have heard some less than promising things about some stories. This one is fun though.

    • This is my first series with Alexandra Ivy. So far, I really like her. I hope you get a chance to try it. I think you would like it.

  11. I’ve always wanted to read an Alexandra Ivy story but I never knew that she did romantic suspense, I had been mostly focused on her paranormal stories.

    • She has been on my radar for a long time before this series came out. I have wanted to try her paranormal stuff too, but this series came up for review, so I decided to grab it. I’m really glad I did.
