I’m not a huge Christmas reader. I’m not a person that goes out looking for Christmas related stories. I do enjoy a good Christmas story when it’s about a series and characters that I already love. I love novellas because we usually get to see a different side to the characters than in full length novels. Novellas tend to not have the big mystery plot (or at least not as large of one) and focuses more on the everyday of the characters which is a fun difference.

In this story, we get to see all the favorite characters from the Mageri series come together for Christmas. Like with a real family, some have more love for the season than others. And since this is the first time they are having Christmas together as a group, there is an interesting shopping trip as Justus and Simon go to purchase a tree and decorations. I love the thought process as Justice finds an ornament for each person.

The “gift” that is received it a pretty amazing one that comes at the perfect time. It is a gift that will be loved by all the characters, but a few in particular. I thought about going into this aspect of the plot line a little bit more, but I really loved the aspects of it. But, I decided that it was too much of a spoiler. If you’re a fan of the Mageri series, this is a must have addition. I’m really hoping that we will get another story in this series. Maybe Finn or Adam???

The Gift Audiobook Narration

Once again, I really enjoyed Nicole Poole’s narration of this book and the entire series. I really love her voice of Simon. I wasn’t a huge of her voice of the Rose, Justus’s daughter. She does sound younger than the rest of the group, but something about it just didn’t sound right. Rose is a very intelligent child and maybe Poole was working to make her sound it and it didn’t sit right with me. It is a small thing. If you haven’t tried Poole, I really enjoy her narrations.

Dannika Dark was born on a military base in the U.S. and had traveled the world before she was nine. Now she is rooted in the south, but her head is planted firmly in the clouds. When Danni is not writing, she enjoys a great sci-fi or fantasy movie, heaps of chocolate, and unleashing her dark side.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. Same here – I never go looking for a “holiday” book. But I LOVE holiday-based novellas in established series I love. I also enjoy a holiday setting in series, as long as the holiday doesn’t overshadow the main characters and plot.

  2. I don’t read all that many holiday themed books either, but this one sounds good! So many series I still need to read. I hope you have a lovely Christmas Melanie!

  3. I’m not a big christmas reader either, not because I don’t like that but just don’t have the time lol.

    • I think one reason I’m not a big fan is that most of the stories (at least ones that aren’t part of a series) fall under contemporary romances, which I’m extremely picky about. I do enjoy the UF and PNR stories that I’ve read.

  4. Oh I want this one, Thanks Melanie. I wish I had more time to read/listen to Christmas stories but just about when I’m ready the season is over and its just not the same you know!

    • Christmas does come and go pretty quickly. I seem some people read books in October and November and I can’t. I need it to feel like Christmas. I hope you had a great Christmas.

  5. I really need to try out both the author and the narrator. Kids are tricky. I’ve listened t a couple with kids now and not totally loved the narration of them.

    • I’ve heard some narrators who’ve nailed children and others who don’t. I’m sure they are very hard to do. I do love this author/narrator pair. I need to try the Seven series.

  6. I am not a big Christmas reader either, but I do enjoy novella’s in existing series and I did pick up two or three Christmas related books this year. And then coincidentally read a cozy mystery which took place around Christmas too, they are fun to read this time of the year.
I also like books or novella’s that show a bit more of the everyday lives. I am glad this was a good one!

  7. Fantastic review Melanie! I am glad that you enjoyed this one too! You should try her Seven series. It’s in the same world but very different 🙂

  8. Phew! I’m so glad you didn’t go further into the plot b/c you told me enough when I picture Simon and Justus going tree hunting. I really need to get over my fear of who Silver ends up with and pick this series up again. I’m such a goof… Great review!! Happy New Year to you!!!

    • I have no ability to wait when I’m in a series I love. I don’t know who you’re rooting for, but I know I liked it. Don’t read thins one until you know. Happy New Year’s to you too.
