In the first book of the Call of the Crows series, we learned a lot about the Crows and the Ravens. In this second installment, we learn about more of the nine clans that have been chosen by the gods to fight at Ragnarok when the time comes and to try to keep it at bay. Mostly, we learn about the Protectors. They are a group of males who are raised knowing what they are. They served the god Tyr. They had owl-like qualities, including turning their heads 280 degrees, which freaks everyone else out.

This story starts off with a bit of a flashback to Jacinda “Jace” Berisha turning into a Crow. She was the wife of a cult leader who kills her. She awakens while he is burying her. Jace joins in with the Crows. She goes on a berserker rage and attacks him. She becomes an introvert who spends the majority of her time hiding from the others, anywhere from under the house to in the cupboards, to read her books. She also has a very adorable puppy that follows her everywhere.

Danski “Ski” Ericson is a Protector. He lives at their library (how can you not love him already.). It isn’t just any library. Think of one of the best libraries you’ve ever seen. Think the library from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The Protectors just acquired some Russian books that they need cataloged, but they don’t have anyone who can speak Russian. So Ski goes to ask Jace who can speak tons of languages (I can’t remember the number or if it is even mentioned. I know they discuss several of the languages that she can speak and how she learned them all). She finally agrees, reluctantly to help them.

There’s a couple of different plot lines in this story. There is the craziness that is the Crows. There is the fact that Jace’s ex-husband is wanting to bring her back into the fold. There is also the matter that in the previous book, a certain god they thought they had killed, is not actually dead. Oh, I can’t forget the books that Jace is translating and her time in the library. I know that sounds like a lot is going on, but it isn’t all crazy. Most of the story revolves around the ex-husband and the god that they fight.

I loved Jace. I think it is mostly because of her love of reading and avoidance of people. As a heavy reader and introvert myself. I can’t help but see a bit of myself in her. I don’t go on berserker rages, but I would love to be able to. I know a few people who I would love to unleash those rages on. Ski is so sweet. I love how much he just wants to see Jace happy. He completely understands that she doesn’t like small talk and doesn’t ask her to do it.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the pets. They are adorable. There is Rev, Jace’s puppy. There is also Brodie Hawaii, Kara’s pit bull who was also turned into a crow when Kara was turned. She is quite an interesting character. Then there’s Ski’s cat, Sulka.

Lastly, I should mention Bear, one of the Protectors. He is excessively protective of the books. He cracked me up several times about the books and then again with the puppy. I should also mention that Jace’s grandma is pretty great too. I should also mention that there are a few hints from Shelly Laurenston’s Pride series with Grizzlies and Wild Dog shifters. Don’t worry if you haven’t read them, they’re just some shifters who make an appearance. I would recommend that series though. It is a lot of fun too.

If you’re looking for a super fun series that is based on Norse mythology, this is the series for you. I do don’t know a whole lot about Norse mythology. The stuff I do know, I don’t know how much is accurate, so I can’t say how much of this is accurate. I just know that it is fun.

“I’ve got an idea,” Gundo cut in. “Have the Ravens kill your ex-husband.”
“It makes complete sense. That way you and society won’t have to worry about him at all.”
“If you’re so worried, why don’t you kill him?”
“Because I’m a Protector,” Gundo patiently explained. “I’ll protect you because that’s we do. But outright murder? That’s a mindless enterprise. Seems much more ravenesque.”
“You just think that the Ravens are stupid.”
“They are stupid.” Erickson muttered.

The Undoing Audiobook Narration

4 Hearts

I really love the narration of Johanna Parker. I think she does a great job with the humor in this series. She does a good job with the different voices for both male and females. I do listen at an increased speed, but that is normal for me. Johanna Parker is one of my favorite narrators when it comes to series that is filled with humor.

Originally from Long Island, New York, Shelly Laurenston has resigned herself to West Coast living which involves healthy food, mostly sunny days, and lots of guys not wearing shirts when they really should be. Shelly Laurenston is also The New York Times Bestselling author G.A. Aiken, creator of the Dragon Kin series. For more info on G.A.’s dangerously and arrogantly sexy dragons, check out her website at

Narrator Johanna ParkerJohanna Parker is an Audie Award Winning, Earphone Award Winning actress living and working in San Francisco. Since narrating her first audiobook for Recorded Books in 2002, Johanna has received high praise for her work in all genres, including the young adult Mediator series by Meg Cabot, Earlene Fowler’s Bennie Harper Mysteries, and her portrayal of Sookie Stackhouse in Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire books of which Audiofile has said, “Parker personifies Harris’s perky Southern heroine, Sookie Stackhouse. Her splendid pacing allows listeners time to absorb the action and emotions…listeners will be enthralled.”

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. It sounds like there are a lot of really great main and secondary characters in this series. I love it when books are like that. It really does add something to have a full cast of lovable people. This series sounds so much fun, I’m going to go look up the first book.

    • I love Shelly Laurenston. She writes such fun characters. They are full of snark. I’m a huge fan of secondary characters. They are usually my favorite in a book. I hope you enjoy The Unleashing. This is a great series to try her, since there are only two books out.

  2. What a crazy world! It’s huge!!! But I love the sound of Jace, too, if only you have to root for the quiet types. Especially b/c a puppy follows her around. Puppies are excellent judges of character ;). And holy guns on the cover model!! I’m in!!!

    • This is a great world Kristin. So much snark. If you’ve never tried Shelly Laurenston, this is a great series to dip your toe into her work, only two books out. She also writes as G.A. Aiken where she writes about really snarky dragons. What’s not to love? 🙂 I hope you enjoy.

  3. Ohh this is that author you told me I should read, isn’t it? I thought I had book one on my TBR @_@ Just added it!

    • It is so fun. So much snark. Only two books, so you’re not too far behind. She does have other series to try if you like this one though.

  4. I GOT ZERO listening time last week. I picked it back up this morning. I am so loving it 🙂

  5. HIYA MEL! <3

I don't know much about Norse mythology either but now reading your review, it makes me want to delve into that world! I've been wanting to learn more about mythology and things so I'm glad this book delivered for you chica! <3 I think I'd read it normally though, without the audio, only because I like to look at the words as I read? Make any sense? teehee!

    • I’m sure it will be just as much fun reading. I hope you enjoy it. I just love the dialogue between the characters. So much fun. 🙂

  6. I really enjoy Norse Mythology there is a lot of it in the Iron Druid Chronicles. I also like the sound of the crows and Ravens and the overprotective bear. I think this sounds like a terrific series. I am adding it to my list.

    • I just started the Iron Druid Chronicles (review for Hounded will be posted soon). I hope you enjoy it Heidi.

  7. What a great review. Thank you. Haven’t started this series, but I do have it on my TBR. I do love Ms. Laurenston.

    • What’s not to love? Her snark is so much fun. The crows are a lot like the wild dogs. Chaotic and very loyal.

  8. This sounds like a original series with the mentions of crows, ravens and those people with owl like creatures. Jacinda sounds like a characters many of us bookworm can relate to with her love for books. And an adorable puppy in a book is always a good thing too. And Danski works at the library, sounds like a good combination of of characters. Great review!

    • Thanks Lola. It has been a fun series. I did like the addition of these two characters. What’s not to love with bookworms, right? The snark is off the charts. 🙂

  9. You listen/read the most awesome shifter books, Melanie! I’m on a romance break now, but I’ll be sure to hunt down the first book. Crows?! I don’t think I’ve ever read a series that features crows!

    • I do love my shifters. 🙂 Ravens, crows and owls. This is a great series. I hope you get a chance to try it. It is a lot of fun and full of snark.

  10. I don’t know why, but the fact that it’s Crows makes me excited to read this. I t sounds great, but even more with Croooooooows! 😀

    • It is so much fun. I just love Shelly Laurenston. Her books are full of snark. There are the female crows, male ravens and the male protectors which have owl like qualities. I hope you enjoy it.

  11. Jace sounds fantastic as does the world building. You make me want to click and download all of these audiobooks!

    • Hahah. I know exactly how you feel. You add so many to mine too. We’ll never be without books to read/listen to. Yay!

  12. This sounds kind of interesting, I need to go check out the first book. Love the cover! 😉 I loke Johanna Parker and think she does a good job with adult books. I have listened to her do YA and it just didn’t really work for me but she is great with adults so I am sure she did a great job with this one. 🙂

    • I’ve not tried her in YA, but I could see where an narrator that we love for adult stories isn’t as good at YA. I haven’t listened to many YA stories, but there is a different feel to them.

  13. This sounds like a fascinating read and series, Melanie. I like the Norse mythology Laurenston used, but the world building also sounds unique. And the library and books are a major draw, of course! 😉 But “I don’t go on berserker rages, but I would love to be able to.” <–that made me giggle out loud because I feel ya! I'm a book loving introvert as well but I sure would like to unleash a berserker rage on occasion. 😉

    • I will say there are times I really would love to be able to go on a berserker rage. I just don’t want to deal with the consequences of such an action. That prevents me from doing many things. 🙂

  14. I love mythology so I think it could totally be for me and the story looks a bit different and I cofess I’m curious about the events.

    • Melliane, it is so much fun. I love the mythology, the snark, the characters. I hope you get a chance to try this series. I think you would enjoy it.

  15. Cool about the Norse mythology tie-in. I haven’t read a Shelly Laurenston yet, but I might start with this series instead of the older one. I haven’t tried that narrator yet, either.

    • You would love Shelly Laurenston. Her humor is on par with Eve Langlais. They are both great for making me LOL. I agree that starting with a shorter series is the way to go. There are only two out in this one, so it will be quick. She then has The Pride and Magnus Pack series, which are tied together, but can be read separately. The Pride series has the same narrator, but under a different name. This author also writes under G.A. Aiken.

  16. So happy you liked The Undoing! This was an easy shoe in for one of my favs of 2016.

    • I love Shelly Laurenston. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I love this series and the Pride series, and the Magnus Pack too. I also love her as G.A. Aiken.

  17. I am definitely a Jace twin. The berserker rages are not quite as external, but I sure could have them with certain people. I really enjoyed the whole crew and the Protectors really made me laugh at times. I did not know those shifter appearances were from earlier series. That was really interesting!

    • I loved Bear. I really hope we get his story soon. I enjoyed the Ravens in the previous book, but not as much as the Protectors. These exact shifters were not used in the Pride series, but wild dogs and grizzlies are in that series. I highly recommend it.

    • The Pride series is narrated by this narrator under another name, so check it out on audio too. She has another series, which I’ve read, that is just now being released on audio. It has a different narrator that I’m not familiar with. Lexxie @ (un)Conventional Bookviews is reviewing that series on audio. I’m interesting in hearing how the narrator does.

  18. I really like the Pride series of books but I haven’t read anything else from her. Sounds like an interesting book.

    • I love the Pride books. This series has the same humor, but with the Norse mythology instead of shifters. Highly recommended.

  19. I read the previous book in this series and couldn’t get into it, which surprised me since I usually love Laurenston. The plot and characters of this one sound a lot more interesting to me. I might give the series a second chance.

    • I hope you enjoy this one more. I really enjoyed the first one, but I think I liked this one better. Jace and Ski are great. I also love Bear, who is another of the Protectors. I’m really hoping he gets the next book.

  20. Can you believe I hadn’t heard of this before, Melanie? It sounds so good, and I’m so curious about the Crows and the Ravens!

    • It is so much fun Lexxie. I know you picked up Shelly Laurenston recently, don’t know if you got a chance to listen to it yet. This series has a different narrator, but the same Laurenston humor. I hope you get a chance to try this series. It is so much fun.

  21. I didn’t finish the first book because it felt so disjointed to me. I am wondering if that might have been a mistake, because the second one seems to be getting better reviews.

I always have to listen to my audio faster, too. I wonder if the narrators talk that slow when they’re reading, or if they slow it down.

    Great review!

    • I did like the second one better than the first one, but I loved the first one too. I love Shelly Laurenston. Her humor just fits me. I’m reading her other pen name, G.A. Aiken, right now. I’ve been speeding up the narrations even more lately. Bumping more and more up to 1.5x when I normally listen at 1.25x.

  22. I love that there’s pets 😀 I didn’t enjoy the first one but maybe I should try this one out on audio and see how that goes. Can make a big difference on formats sometimes.

    • Try the audio. I love Johanna Parker. I tried to read Molly Harper’s first Jane Jameson book many, many years ago and DNF. Then several years later after listening to some of her other books went back and listened to Jane Jameson that I loved it.
