Hammered picks up pretty much where Hexed left off. Atticus must go to Asgard to steal a golden apple for Laksha to settle up a debt from the previous story. Leif wants to go to Asgard to kill Thor and there are many who want to go kill Thor too. It seems that Thor is not the nice guy that we see from Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel movies.

One of the big things that stuck with me was all the stories about each person and why they wanted to kill Thor. There were many and they weren’t good stories. They were well told. I loved listening to each character tell Atticus about how Thor had wronged them. I would want to kill him too, even if he did smile like Chris Hemsworth.

We learn about how Leif because a vampire too. We get to spend time with the werewolf alpha, who has been in previous books but in small pieces. Not to mention the new characters. We also can’t forget the Morrigan. This wouldn’t be an Iron Druids book without her.

Iron Druid Chronicles continues to be a fun urban fantasy series with a very likeable main character and wonderful secondary characters. It has a mix of several different kinds of mythologies including Norse, Greek, Finnish, Christian folklores. Add to that the standard werewolf, vampire, witches and other supernaturals that we are used to seeing, and you get a great group of characters, both good and bad, to choose from. As per usual, it is the humor that I love in this book. Atticus talks about his angel and devil on his shoulders as Spock and Captain Kirk.

Now go and stake some vamps. Especially the sparkly emo ones.

Awesome! I’d just bullied Jesus into doing a shot with me. Nobody would ever believe it, but I didn’t care. We ordered the insanely expensive stuff, seventy-five dollars for a 1.75-ounce pour of premium Irish whiskey, because if you’re doing a shot with Jesus, you don’t buy him scotch.

“Say no more,” Leif interrupted. “I understand. I will simply have to kill them all myself.”
“There he goes again. I’m telling you, Danny Elfman would love to get hold of those lines.”
“Not John Williams?”
“If you’ve got some hopelessly overmatched heroes fighting evil and some Imperial types marching, John Williams is your guy. You need a song to make people reach for a box of Kleenex, talk to Randy Newman. But if you want creepy atmospherics and spine-shivering chords to back up your casual death threats, you gotta bring in Danny Elfman.”

“I see. And who is this author?”
“Neil Fucking Gaiman.”
“His second name is Fucking?”
“No, Leif, that’s the honorary second name all celebrities are given by their fans. It’s not an insult, it’s a huge compliment, and he’s earned it. You’d like him. He dresses all in black like you. Read a couple of his books, and then when you meet him, you’ll squee too.”
Leif found the suggestion distasteful. “I would never behave with so little dignity. Nor would I wish to be confronted in such a manner by anyone else. Vampires inspire screams, not squees. Involuntary urination is common, I grant, but it properly flows from a sense of terror, not an ecstatic sense of hero worship.”

Luke Daniels continues to be a plus to listening to this series. If you haven’t tried listening to this series, I highly recommend it. He is amazing. I think he does a great job bringing out the personality in Atticus, not to mention Oberon, Atticus’s Irish wolfhound. I will say that I thought that Ratatosk, a giant squirrel who helps Atticus get Asgard sounded a bit like Smeagol from the Lord of the Rings movies.

Kevin HearneKevin is the author of The Iron Druid Chronicles, an urban fantasy series published by Del Rey Books. The first six books of the series are now out as well as a novella that’s book 4.5 and some other short works. The seventh book, SHATTERED, will be released June 17.

Narrator: Luke DanielsLuke Daniels was born into a family of actors. Both his father and mother have been performing and teaching for almost five decades. It is because of their influence that, from a very young age, Luke and his two brothers often found themselves in rehearsal halls at repertory theatres all over the country; watching innumerable productions of Much Ado, Julius Caesar, and Midsummer’s.

Luke’s first theatrical role came at the age of 5 as Fleance in a production of Macbeth. He immediately loved the creativity and camaraderie of the theatre. (It also didn’t hurt that he was allowed to miss school for certain performances.)

Over the years Luke has performed at many repertory theatres across the country, including the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Connecticut Rep., and Hope Summer Rep. in Holland, Michigan. Luke has his Bachelor’s from Western Michigan University and his MFA in performance from the University of Connecticut.

Luke has worked professionally as a director, teacher, audiobook narrator, voice-over, commercial, and industrial actor.

But he maintains that the greatest role he has ever played is that of a Father to his daughter.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. I love Luke’s voice for Oberon. I enjoy this series but I’m not sure I would be as hooked on it if I read it vs. listening to Luke’s narration. I’m currently listening to Shattered and I still enjoy the series. Like most series some books are better than others but overall this is a fun UF series for fans of mythology with a side of humor.

    • I completely agree with this. I love this series on audio, but I’ve never tried to read it. UF seems to work that for me in general, though. Something about the genre just clicks for me in audio form.

      • I really enjoyed UF a lot too. I think the genre has some great narrators that like to narrate them. I’m extremely happy about that. 🙂

    • I’m loving this series. I agree that this is way better to listen to, though truthfully, I have nothing to compare it to. I haven’t tried to read it. I’m going to try my best to never read, but only listen. 🙂

  2. OOh this sounds really good Melanie and since I read Fred the Vampire accountant from your review of his second book + Drew has agreed to do an interview with me so stay tuned this one is going on my wish list.

    • I can’t wait to read the review. I know he has the third Fred the Vampire Accountant book coming out very soon. I’ve already requested it for review> 🙂 I’m so glad that you enjoyed the first book. I always love hearing when someone loves a book that learned about from me. 🙂

      • Yes thank you for introducing me to Fred 🙂 and his third book is out its called Bloody Acquisitions Great title right?
I’ve scheduled his interview for 9-26

        • That series has great titles. That is what drew me in and I’m so glad it did. I will be on the lookout for your interview. You have great ones, so it should be fun. 🙂

  3. I need to grab the audios on these so bad! I really enjoyed the one book I read in the series. Glad you’re having such a good time with them!

    • I can’t recommend this series enough, especially on audio. I hope you get a chance to try them.

  4. That sounds like a lot of fun. I love Norse mythology when done right.

    • I like Norse Mythology too. I’ve been reading more and more of it. Not to mention, I’ve been watching Vikings on the History Channel. It’s a fun show. 🙂

    • We have very similar tastes in UF stories, so I know you will love it, too. I’m glad you grabbed it on audio.

  7. Darn it..I have book one on kindle and audiobook..I really need to listen. I think I would love these!

    • I know you would Kimberly. It is such a fun series. So much action and humor.

  8. I also greatly enjoy this series. Luke Daniels does a great job narrating the books. Oberon is such a fun character, often bringing humor to tense situations.

    • Yes, so much so. Luke Daniels is amazing. I just love the voice he uses for Oberon. 🙂

  9. I really need to start this series soon! I will try to do the audio if our library has it.

    • If your library doesn’t have it, I would really try to convince them to buy it. It is such a great series. It would be great for their collection. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

  10. I’m so glad to see this series is going strong beyond book one. I read it and loved it, but never kept going. The audio version seems to make it even more fabulous.

Great review, Melanie! Loved the quotes.

    • Aren’t the quotes great. There are so many great ones to choose for each book. I hope you get back to this series. I do highly recommend the audios. I don’t think you will go back to reading if you give them a try.

  11. I really need to try this series, every time I see a review I want to try it…lol. The fact that Luke Daniel narrates is a good reason to go for the audio version. 🙂

    • It is a fun UF series. Plenty of action and humor, but a lot of different mythologies are used, which is fun. This is the first series that I’ve listened to with Luke Daniels. I will be looking for more. He is wonderful.
