Magic Shifts Audiobook

5 Hearts

The Kate Daniels series has to be one of my favorite series of all time. The world that the Ilona Andrews writing team has built in this magical Atlanta is, well, magical. Their ability to describe the monsters that Kate, Curran and the rest of the gang have to face always amazes me. They have the ability to make me laugh, cry and I’m always on the edge of my seat while listening to Kate try to save those around her.

In this Magic Shifts, Kate and Curran have given up control of the Pack. They are not allowed at the Keep. Jim is trying to juggle the political battle, now that he is the Beast Lord and ruling over all the clans. He knows that his power isn’t absolute at this time and that he is walking a very fine line. So there is nothing he can do when, Eduardo, a member of Clan Heavy goes missing and Mahon, leader of Clan Heavy, doesn’t seem concerned. However, George, Mahon’s daugher and Eduardo’s girlfriend, goes to Kate and Curran for help. I don’t want to go into too much more detail, so as not to spoil anything for people who haven’t read this book yet.

There are ghouls and djinn which are new this series. We also have Ghastek, our favorite navigator. Roland and Saimon also make appearances. We even get to see a lot of Dali, and I just love her to pieces. I love seeing how she is handling being consort to the Beast Lord.

Magic Shifts is a another great installment to the Kate Daniels series. There is a lot that takes place and you see the changes coming for Kate and Curran and many of their friends. Many have to make tough decisions, some already have made those decisions. I can’t wait to see where Ilona Andrews take the series from here. If you haven’t tried this series, I highly recommend it, but you will need to start at the beginning or you will be lost.

Reneé Raudman continues to be an excellent pairing for this series. She does a great job with the growing cast of characters and their many different voices and accents. She has the exceptional ability to really bring the emotion of the story to life. I think Ms. Raudman has a great ability to make me laugh or cry along with the story. While I could probably pick up an arc of this book in print, I will continue to wait for this series and pick up on release day on audio. I also wasn’t even willing to wait for a review audio. I went ahead got it from Audible so I could have it on release day. This is an audio only series for me.

Ilona Andrews

Authors – Ilona Andrews

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children, and many dogs and cats. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. I finished on Sunday and I was so happy with how the book turned out. I was scared (just a wee bit) of how they would be post-pack. I wasn’t disappointed!

    • I wasn’t sure where the story was going to go either. I’m really happy with the storyline. Books like these, I have the hardest time writing reviews for them. I just want to fan girl the whole time. 🙂

  2. I need to buy this one ASAP! Great review Melanie!

  3. Oh yes I agree I love this series and I had a great time with this one again. I really want to read more again!

    • This is a series that I could revisit over and over and never get bored.

  4. Awesome! It’s good that the series is still going strong. I guess it helps that there’s two of them writing, and they obviously have chemistry.

    • They’ve done such a great job, but then love everything they’ve published. All their stories are so unique.

  5. I am so glad this one kept things at fever pitch and interesting. I was a little nervous after the big grand finale feel of the last book. I love the idea of Dali as the Consort, too. Nice review, Melanie!

    • I think there were a lot of people who were nervous about this book after the ending of the previous book. I have to say, there is nothing to be nervous about. This one is just as good as all the others.

  6. I think I’m the only person on earth who hasn’t read this author and I really want to. Thanks for the great review!

    • It is on the top of my favorite UF series. It has humor, action, great worldbuilding and characters. There is some sex, but not tons of it. I can’t say a bad thing about it. I hope you get a chance to try it soon.

  7. I really need to start this series..I have book one on audio..lol. So little time so many books. 🙂

    • I know the feeling. There are so many series that I’ve yet to start either. I hope you get to start this one soon. It is my favorite.

  8. OMG… I loved this book SO FREAKIN’ much! Although I read it, I will be listening to it, too. I’ve both read and listened to this series and love it both ways (but reading first, then audio for me). Great review. I am so happy with how this one went.

I can’t imagine how tough THAT scene with Kate and Curran was to listen to. I was in tears reading it… I would have been sobbing in audio!

    • It was very difficult to keep from tearing up. My eyes were watery, that is for sure.

  9. I am so nervous for Curran and Kate. So much is changing. I can’t wait to read this book!

  10. I absolutely loved this! I’m so curious about Roland. I know he’s tricky but he seems so funny trying to actually be a dad. That premonition though kind of ruins it for me.

    • I’m really curious about Roland too. Should be interesting to see how he fits into the next story.
