Ah, the last book in the Dark Protectors series. Endings of series are always bittersweet. I love seeing how everything wraps up, but then I also sad to see the end of characters that I’ve come to love. In this series and in this book, the ending comes with the story of Zane and Janie. Janie is a character we’ve watched grow up throughout the series. When we first meet Janie in the first book, she is only four years old. I haven’t read many books where I’ve known the character as a child. I wasn’t sure how I would like a romance about a book when I read about them and stuff bear named Mr Mullett. Turns out, it didn’t bother me in the slightest.

Janie is the chosen one. She is a very powerful seer. She sees the future. Always has. We see her do this in the first book when she is just four years old and tells her that her knew father is coming to get them. She also has the ability to create dream worlds. Not only create dream worlds, but to allow other people into them. In comes Zane, a boy that has grown up with Janie, but we don’t know what he is. Is he a vampire, shifter, a hybrid? No one knew. There is also Kalin, who is a kurjan that has been at war with the vampires since the beginning of the series. He also wants Janie.

Zane has had a rough life. We’ve seen him in bits and pieces throughout the series, but this is the first time we really get to spend any time with him. He is very loyal and a great warrior. He’s done things he isn’t proud of, but he has done them to protect his family. He also wants to protect Janie and keep her out of this war. Problem is that she is vital to the war. There is no keeping her out of it.

I really enjoyed the wrap up to this series. I thought it brought things to a great conclusion. I loved that there was plenty of page time with each of the characters that I’ve loved from the series. I loved watching everyone come together to win the war. While there are two potential love interests for Janie, there is no love triangle. Kalin is never a true potential lover for Janie, no matter how much he wants it. He is just too evil for he to ever willingly be with him.

I think that this was my favorite romance of the series. I loved watching these two come together. I don’t know if it is because this is something that has been building since book one or what, but I really enjoyed seeing Zane trying so hard to win Janie. He really wasn’t what Janie was expecting when she finally got to met him in person.

I also enjoyed the wrap up at the end with each couple. I thought that was a great way to end the series. I felt it gave it great closure. I will miss this world that Rebecca Zanetti has built. I will have to check out some of her other series to see what I’m going to try next. I’m sure it will be an adventure.

Marked Audiobook Narration

Once again, I really enjoyed the narration by Karen White. I’ve enjoyed it throughout the entire series. I was always able to tell which character was speaking. She had some wonderful accents, plus the demonic voices she had to tackle. There was even some revisit of the really young Janie, which she nails. If you haven’t tried Karen White, I recommend you try one of her audiobooks.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. Glad the end of the series went well! I love when a series wraps up nicely instead of rushed. I keep saying it, but I’ll get around to book one of this series sometime soon lol

    • So many series, so little time. I completely get it. I feel the same way when I see people review series and I keep saying that I’m going to give them a try.

  2. I need to get back to into this series *sigh* My reading/listening block really got me behind!

    • I feel like I’m really far behind on a bunch of stuff too. I’m only going to get further behind because I’m listening to IT right now. That will take me probably a week or maybe more. I’m only 7 hours in, which is a full book for a lot of books.

  3. That is good. Endings are not only bittersweet, it can be quite tricky too. I haven’t read this series, my first try with RZ was far from good. But I like that the wrap-up was great and wasn’t rushed.

    • I’ve only read this series and her Sin Brothers series and I loved them both. It was not rushed at all. This one wrapped up well. I’ve read many that have been wrapped up too quickly.

  4. So glad this ended on a high note and the romance was a favorite. This serie is on my wishlist!

    • I hope you enjoy when you get to it. I know there are so many great series. It is hard to get to all of them.

  5. I really need to read this series now! Ugh! Everything about this book and series fits my criteria for any paranormal stories I would love to add to my shelves. Great review lady!

    • Thanks, Leona. It was a fun series. I really enjoyed it. Many of the romances weren’t my favorite, but I loved all the stories and the overall story arcs.

  6. I’ve debated starting this series and your review is inspiring. Think I’ll put it back on the list.

  7. I’m glad this series ended so satisfyingly, Melanie. I know it’s bittersweet when a series ends but at least this one ended well. I picked up Claimed in audio to refresh my memory on the story so I can dive back in. I’m happy to know the entire series is worthwhile.

    • Claimed is a fun one with the king and queen of the Realm. I didn’t listen to any of the novellas. I might have to go back through and listen to them too.

  8. Ending are always bittersweet but I’m glad this one ended well for you. 😉

    • I know, sometimes it is hard. I do feel like I’ve accomplished something though. I did want to finish some series this year and I can mark this one off the list and I really enjoyed it.

  9. Sounds like a good series and that it ended well. I love Karen White so if I try this one it will be on audio! 🙂

I so need an ipod! Thanks for the giveaway!

    • Good luck on the giveaway. I really like Karen White too. I just saw on Felicia’s narrator spotlight that she does some cozy mysteries. This might be my way to finally give them a try.

  10. Ah Melanie I feel the same way about a series ending especially one you aren’t ready to let go of. Great Review Thanks for the giveaway chance too!

    • You’re welcome, Debbie and good luck! This was a fun series. I can always go back and listen to the novellas, which I didn’t listen to while going through this series. I just did full-length novels.

  11. Oh yes, seeing Janie and Zane finally get their book was great. I think I teared up near the end as she reunited all the older couples.

But good news, Melanie! The spin-off Realm Enforcers series really just keeps things going with this world and many of it’s characters. Just the focus moves from the Vamps and Kurjans to the Witches and a shadowy group against them. Latest book even had some Zane time. 🙂

    • I did really enjoy Zane. He was a great character. I’ll have to try this series. So many great books. 🙂

  12. With every post, you add more books to my TBL pile!

  13. Between you and Felicia, I so need to start reading this author. I have a few listed for later at my library and just need to get to them. Thanks for the reminder!

    • I really like her. If you want to try her, I would recommend starting with Sin Brothers. It is only four books and it is my favorite series so far. It is a romantic suspense with a hint of paranormal (genetic enhancements in humans raised in a military type camp)

  14. Oooh… a seer and a warrior! I like the sound of that. You have me intrigued about Zane’s difficult past. Sounds like the perfect wrap up to the series!

    • It was a fun ending to a series that I really enjoyed. I guess there is a spin off series I can delve into soon. So many books, I don’t know what I want to start next.

  15. I really have got to get this series read. Yay for it ending well. Endings of a series always make me a spot nervous so good hearing it was entertaining 🙂

    • I’m always worried about that too. I was happy with how this one ended.
