An Interview with Carly Robins

1. How did you get involved in recording audiobooks?

I had been working as an actress in NYC for several years and I had gotten into writing and producing my own stuff and was having lunch with a friend discussing my career and how I had starting working in voiceovers. She mentioned a friend of hers who was an engineer for audiobooks and was looking for people. I emailed him and the rest is history. I had grown up listening to audiobooks and as an actress the written word is gold and I have always been a voracious reader…so it was a match made in heaven.

2. What type of prepwork do you do before recording a new book? Do you prepare differently if the book is standalone or first in a series versus later books in a series?

I always read the book prior to recording. The prepwork in terms of my acting process is the same whether it is a stand alone or part of a series. However, if it is in a series I try to get files from the previous narrators and I rely on the production staff to guide me with pronunciations like characters names, and specific character traits. There is definitely a lot more research for those and I am not always successful getting those answers, but hope that even with my take on the project, listeners will understand that it is a different artist and a different voice. If it is a series that I am the narrator for I am always so excited to see where the story goes and how the characters have evolved. Those are like visiting old friends and I am super excited to dive right in.

3. Do you narrate every book that comes your way or have you ever turned one down. And if you have what made you decide not to go forward with this project?

I do narrate everything that comes my way. The only time I have had to pass on a project is because I am so booked I just don’t have the time and the due dates don’t have any flexibility. This has only happened maybe two or three times. I figure, if the fabulous casting people think I am the right voice, then I am the right voice. I trust them and am so honored each time I get cast.

4. What is the element of narration that you find comes easiest (accents, age, emotion, rhythm of the story)?

Hands down the emotion and humor come so easily for me.

5. What is your favorite thing about performing audiobooks?

I love love love love reading. And getting to tell stories and getting into the minds of all these different characters is a dream come true. As an actress, to be able to play so many different roles is an absolute dream and it’s one I can’t achieve in any other medium (other than a one person show, but those are so rare).

6. What was your most challenging read? What made it so difficult?

I had a book where it was clear that the editor had done a poor job (if there was an editor at all, frankly) and it made the storytelling so difficult because at times I couldn’t even make sense out of most of the sentences. So my biggest challenges are always dependent on the quality of the writing. The better the writing the better I can be at my performance.

7. Which famous person, living or dead, would you most like to meet and why?

Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin. I am just so in awe of their talent, activism, creativity, longevity, confidence, vulnerability, and bravery…and I am sure I missed an adjective in there. They are pioneers in their fields and are STILL at the top of their game with the art they are creating and their relevance in our culture.
