This is the fourth book I read/listened to in a row that had a hero who was a geek or scientist. It wasn’t planned that way. I was just going through series and that is where they all landed. Kane Karys is known as the “smart” brother. He is the scientist. He spends most of his time in the lab working on the cure for the virus that is affecting vampire mates, shifters and most recently witches. He doesn’t believe in love. He looks at it like a scientist.

“What about love?”
He sighed “Love is a chemical reaction induced in our brain to encourage propagating the species. The sensation is merely a scientific phenomenon, like the northern lights.”

Kane isn’t as much of a fighter, but that doesn’t mean he can’t kick some ass. He just isn’t as good at it as his brothers. He also isn’t as good at fitting in with humans as his brothers. But he is the only one available to seek out the only demon destroyer they have found in years. So he is sent out to bring in Amber Freebird to help them free their youngest brother, Jase, from the demons.

Amber grew up in a commune where they grow all their own organic vegetables. They don’t eat any animals products all. She is a complete vegan. She lives completely off the grid and is quite the eco-nut. Kane approachers she has no idea what he is talking about with demons and such. She thinks he is referring to inner demons or something. She has no idea about her powers. Oh, Amber is also a pacifist, which isn’t a great way to battle demons.

Needless to say, Kane tried to convince Amber to mate with him, so that he will share her powers and he can fight the demons for her. Like I said, he doesn’t understand love. He doesn’t get how much asking her for something like mating for a purpose instead of for something like love would hurt her.

There is quite a bit of the story told from Jase’s POV. The demons are not kind to him. One of the female demons try to get him to mate her so that he could save her from her evil brother. Jase has quite the decision to make. I won’t spoil it by telling you what choice he makes.

There is also more between Zane, Kalin, and Janie. Don’t worry. This isn’t a love triangle in the making (I don’t think). Kalin is a bad guy. He keeps trying to get in between Zane and Janie. He also wants Janie because she is the key to winning the war. Janie wants nothing to do with him. Zane continues to push Janie away because he says he isn’t the good guy either. I don’t know. We did learn more about what Zane is.

There’s only two more full length stories in this series, Jase and Janie’s stories. I’m really interested in learning more about both of these two characters, and Zane as part of Janie’s story. I also really want to see what happens with the overall story. While I haven’t loved the romance in this series, I’ve continued to enjoy the story of the overall series and learning more about each character as each of their stories is told.

Karen White continues to do a great job with this series. I don’t know what else I can say about her that I haven’t already said. Her voice choices are perfect for each character. I never question which character is talking. I do listen at an increased speed, but I do that with all my audiobooks.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. I love a geeky hero Melanie. I just recently tried this author’s newest series. I am hoping to try some of these back series and this sounds like a good one 🙂

    • I really want to try that new series by her. It looks really good. This is the second series that I’ve tried by Zanetti. I’ve really enjoyed her work so far. It is tough when you find an author who has several back series and trying to get caught up. Good luck 🙂

  2. This sounds good. One of these days I will get to at least one of her series. They all seem so good.

    • The Sin Brothers series is a great one to try. There are only four books. I really enjoyed the audios, same narrator as this one. I hope you get a chance to try her at some point.

  3. thanks Melanie, yet another author I want to read. Great review!

    • There are so many of those authors out there that we’ve yet to try but want to. Not a bad problem to have for us, readers. A never ending supply of great stories. 🙂

  4. I love a hero who is so socially awkward, especially in love, that it’s almost painful. LOL This is another series I’m thinking of catching up in via audio, Melanie. I’ve always loved these vampires. 🙂

    • Kane was a fun one. He just didn’t know what to do. That is something he was not used to. I don’t know why I ended up with so many geeks all at the same time, but you won’t hear me complaining. I like smart men. Much better than dumb ones. 🙂

  5. I LOVE GEEKY HEROS. They are so cute and mmmm! Have had a good geeky hero in awhile. I think I’m going to have to hunt one down 😀

  6. It is seriously hard to resist a nerd. 😉

  7. lol yay for geek/scientist! I’ve done that before, picking books with similar aspects in the characters 😀

Hope you have a great weekend

    • I’ve really enjoyed these geeky guys. I hope you have a great weekend too.

  8. You are the one that has me wanting to read this author. Oh I so might have to do it on audio. I do like Karen’s narration.

    • Hahaha. This is the second series I’ve read by Zanetti. The first series I listened to was her Romantic Suspense series, The Sin Brothers. It is only four books long. It is narrated by Karen White also. I liked it even better than this one.

  9. Geek or no Kane sounds yummy lol. Your review has me looking harder at this series, so my TBR pile thanks you 🙂

    • I didn’t mean to sound like I was complaining. I love geeky men. You should also look at her Sin Brothers series. It is only four books long, so you could fly through it. It is Romantic Suspense. I like it even better than this one. Narrated by Karen White too.

  10. I have a soft spot in my heart for geeks / scientists, so I think I’d enjoy Provoked, Melanie! And of course, anything Zanetti writes needs to be on my kindle or phone 😉
    Have a wonderful weekend.

    • There is a lot more of Zanetti’s stuff that I want to read. I really want to get to her newest series. It isn’t on audio (or at least not yet), so I guess I’ll be reading it.

  11. I love revisiting this series through your reviews. Kane and Amber were great together. Poor Jace! I wanted his book, but getting to Janie’s book was on my mind, too.

    Glad you’re liking these.

    • I love revisiting older series that I’ve read through other people’s reviews too. I only have two more and then I will be looking for another series from Audible to review. 🙂

  12. I would not have thought, looking at the cover that this was a PNR! There seems like a lot going on, definitely a start at the beginning. I’m curious about these characters, the dynamics sound really interesting!

    • It is a PNR. It does have a bit of a UF feel because it has a great overall story arc that follows the whole series. I like PNRs that do that. Then if I’m not a huge fan of the couple, I can still enjoy the story. It does make it harder to pick up the series out of order.

  13. I may have to pick up her books now. I love vampires and geeky vampires trying to find cures is always great to read.

    • I do love Rebecca Zanetti. This is the second series I’ve read by her. She has some other great series that I haven’t started yet, but I’ve seen some great reviews.

  14. Kane’s an interesting dude. The one who sticks out but has more to him than brawn. TG there’s no love triangle! Although the villain who keeps on getting in the way is more my guy. What a trickster!

    • I do love a good villain every now and then. Lothaire is still my favorite IAD male. LOL 🙂

  15. Ahh I definitely need to get these read. I’ve enjoyed her others so much. It is funny how you can land in those reading streaks. I managed to get 3 Sebastians and all called Bast in like 2 weeks time. lol

  16. this one sounds quite well done and it’s nice to have characters like that! One day I’ll have to try a book by this author!

    • I’ve really enjoyed the two series that I’ve read. She has two series (I think) that I haven’t tried. I hope to try them sometime soon.

  17. What a coincidence you read four books in a row with scientists as characters. He sure has a scientific view on love and I can see how that can hurt her to view love so scientifically. I am glad to hear you’re enjoying this series even though you don’t love the romance.

    • I like action in my books more than romance. I read a lot of PNR, but not necessarily for the romance, so it doesn’t bother me. Other might enjoy the romance more than I do.

  18. Audio books a re not my face, but the characters sound interesting and the story a unique one. Loved the review! Hugs…RO

    • Yeah, I know many people who haven’t found my love of audiobooks. The great part is that I can still share my love of the story with those people too. I hope you get a chance to try this series. It is a fun one.

  19. Seriously. One day I will read Rebecca Zanetti. I was supposed to read one of her books for book club this month and I ran out of time. I need to try her in audio, seeing as you like the narrator so much, since I tend to do better with audiobooks – I read so much faster that way. But this sure does sound up my alley – geeky hero! hell yes 🙂

    • This is the second series that I’ve listened to by Rebecca Zanetti, but with Karen White narrating. The first one was her Sin Brothers series. It is more romantic suspense and is only four books long. I really loved that series. This series I like a lot, but not quite as much. I do have the next book in this series and really excited to hear the youngest brother’s story.
