Dimitri and Jacyee are shifters that have been very close for a long time now. Dimitri claimed Jacyee as his mate in a previous story. He wanted to tell her to keep herself safe. Jacyee is a strong willed tracker and high up in the pack (just below Dimitri). She doesn’t take to being told what to do by anyone but her alpha, Kendrick.

So there is something going on in New Orleans. Kendrick and Dylan have asked Dimitri and Jacyee to go undercover to figure out exactly what is going on and who is leading this new group. They are chosen because they would make good targets. Dimitri is a very strong fighter, but he also has a terrible stutter. He is also frequently mocked because he’s a red wolf, which some see as not pure. He’s often called “coyote”. While this doesn’t bring Dimitri down, because he knows that he could win a fight with any of those mocking him, it would make it easy to infiltrate this cult-like group.

So Dimitri and Jacyee stay in Jazz’s house while in New Orleans. It is a character itself. It has a mind of it’s own and doesn’t mind sharing it’s thoughts. It is also very protective, which vines that will wrap around it to protect from a severe storm. When the second floor is damaged, it just repairs itself.

So Dimitri and Jacyee meet up with a bear shifter who is working to convince shifters in the power of the goddess. He does some “magic” by sticking his hand in the fire and not getting burned, but it isn’t magic, just a magic trick. The more we learn about about Brice, the more suspicious he seems.

So this story wasn’t the best romance and the mystery wasn’t all that mysterious, but I still had a ton of fun in this world that Jennifer Ashley as created. I loved how Dimitri didn’t allow his stutter to define him. I love how Jacyee is a strong female and that didn’t intimate Dimitri in the slightest. He frequently admits that her strength is one things he loves most about her. Neither need the other to complete themselves, but they are stronger as a pair. This is a story that I read mostly for the characters. The characters are wonderful, so even if the romance isn’t my favorite or if I figure out who the bad guy is quickly, I still love spending time with these characters.

Cris Dukehart does an amazing job with the narration of this book. She did a great job with Dimitri and his stuttering. You could really tell when he was getting frustrated and when he was willing to just work through it. The way she had Jacyee finishing his sentences without her sounding condescending was great. I love listening to her narration of this series.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. I just had a blast with this book, and what a pair these two made for each other.

  2. Awwwww… I would want more romance for these two. I already feel protective of Dmitri 🙂 I’m glad you still enjoy this series!!!

    • This pair was so much fun. I loved how strong he was, despite the stutter and what people thought of him.

  3. I enjoyed this one but thought it started out kinda slow. I loved that house and how it has a real personality.

  4. I really enjoyed the two of them and their dynamic. His stutter was an interesting characteristic.

PS– Your feed stopped updating a bit back. Last it shows having posted is Sophia’s review of The Falmouth Connection

    • Thanks for the heads up about the feed. I’m not sure I would’ve noticed. I’m looking into it. I hope to have it fixed before my next post. I agree the stutter was a great characteristic for him.

      • No prob! I’m not sure what it is but three of yall all disappeared at the same time. I believe you’re all on wordpress maybe. I was going wow it’s quiet all the sudden! lol

  5. I’m behind on this series but I love it!

    • This series is so much fun. I still have a few novellas to tackle.

  6. Oh I miss this series. Thanks for the great review

  7. That house sounds so cool! Glad to hear you enjoyed this one. Too bad about the romance not being as good as you hoped and the mystery not being too mysterious. The characters do sound wonderful and well written. Great review!

    • I do love the characters in this series. That is what makes this series so much fun. I’ve really enjoyed listening to it.

  8. I’m pretty sure my library had these in audio when I checked awhile back. I need to hurry up and get book 1 😀

  9. I keep thinking I’ll try this series, but now there are 10 books out?! Too many others on my TBR!

    • I know exactly what you mean. I do love this series, though.

  10. I really enjoyed this story. I felt like the romance didn’t need to move as fast as Jaycee and Dmitri had somewhat of a relationship ahead of this. I am in love with this world for sure.

    • You’re probably right there. Romance isn’t usually high on my list. I like the suspense parts to stories where they try to work something out, like this cult like thing in this one.

  11. Thank you so much for the fabulous review, Melanie! I have to admit… I have favorites, and Dimitri was absolutely one of them! ANd that HOUSE!!! I LOVED the HOUSE!!! SO glad you enjoyed this and ALL of the books in the Shifters Unbound series 🙂

    • That house was amazing. I just loved it. Thank you so much for bringing this series to life for me. Dimitri is a favorite of mine. You did a great job with him.
