I listened to the Mageri series when it was first released on audio back in 2014. I really enjoyed it. Simon was one of my favorite characters in that series, so when I heard Simon was getting his own book, I was really excited. So now I get to learn more about Simon Hunt, who is part of the Mageri Halo organization and a great strategist. He has always been a ladies’ man. I should point out at this series is UF, so the main character in the original five books takes a while to find her love. Here, Simon does it in one book.

So a council member asks Simon for a favor. It’s a big one. Novis, the council member, asks Simon to train a Learner of another councilmember. One that Simon can’t stand named Hannah. So, Simon shows up to talk to Hannah about it, he learns that Ella is deaf. She was at a party that was attacked and the injury isn’t able to healed because of something that was used during the battle. Hannah is embarrassed that her learner is “defective”. She isn’t progressing like she should be. Hannah will either have to live with the fact that she will have to take care of Ella for the rest of her life or “put her down”.

Simon agrees to help Hannah. One, Hannah is paying him a lot money. Two, a very powerful council member, in Novis, would own him a favor. He quickly learns that Ella isn’t nearly as “defective” as Hannah thinks she is. Once Simon starts to train her, her progress grows really quickly. Hannah is very protective of Ella and there is a reason for that (I won’t say why, so no spoilers). She has kept her sheltered since the accident and Ella is feeling suffocated. Once Simon is around, he takes her outside and out into the world.

Both Simon and Ella have a pretty brutal past. That past has both taken them to where they are now and it has brought plenty of baggage with it. This past has helped to bring Simon and Ella together. While training, Simon learns that someone is following them. He works with someone from the Chitah race to help track down who is following them. Chitah are a species that have animalistic qualities, but they aren’t shifters. They will grow claws and teeth, but that’s it.

This story is a nice paranormal romance with a ton of suspense. If you haven’t tried this series, I highly recommend it. I really enjoyed it. You can read this book without having read the Mageri series, but there are spoilers in this book for the previous five books, so it is really best if you read/listen to them first.

Risk Audiobook Narration

4 Hearts

Nicole Poole narrated the first five books in the Mageri series, and continues to do well with this book. I really enjoyed her narration. She does a great job with both male and female voices. Also, Simon is British, so she had to do his accent, which I thought was pretty good. I really thought she added to the story.

Dannika Dark was born on a military base in the U.S. and had traveled the world before she was nine. Now she is rooted in the south, but her head is planted firmly in the clouds. When Danni is not writing, she enjoys a great sci-fi or fantasy movie, heaps of chocolate, and unleashing her dark side.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. Thanks to you I now have this author on my TBR! I think I even picked up one to start. Glad you enjoyed it!

    • Lorna at Rabid Reads got me to try her. It has been a fun series. I hope you enjoy it.

  2. Hey Great review Melanie! Can this be read as a stand alone?

    • Yes, it can be read as a stand alone, but it will have a few spoilerrs for the rest of the series. This story takes place chronologically after the rest of the series.

  3. Is the Mageri series one that you think I’d love? I’m intrigued. Guessing it would be better to read those first 🙂

    • This one can be read as a stand alone, but does have some spoilers for the rest of the series. This one takes place after that one. It mentions a few deaths and some couple pairing that could spoil tha main series. Other than that, you could follow a long just fine.

  4. I have this author on my must try list. Darn, I think you added a series. I will try the Mageri series first. Hm… audio might be the way to go here for me. Brilly review.

    • Lorna at Rabid Reads got me hooked on this series. I really want to try her other series. I forget what it is called, but starts with Seven Years, I think. It has the same narrator too. 🙂

    • No, this is a continuation about Simon. Similar to what Frost did with her Night Huntress World/Night Prince books. It takes place after the first five books and can be read without reading those, but there might be some spoilers. You know people are dead, who ends up as a couple, who has babies, etc. But, you will understand the story without having read it.

  5. Neat that it combines PNR and suspense. Another series I need to try. Glad she gave you another book for the character you enjoy.

    • I’ve really enjoyed this series. It has been a lot of fun.

  6. I have the entire 7 series to listen to first! I cannot wait.

    • I need to get that one too. I’ve heard such great things. It also has the same narrator as this one.

  7. This sounds good, but I want to read the other books first. My OCD tendencies insists on it.

    • I completely understand. I’m the same way. I hope you get to try them. The whole series has been a lot of fun.

  8. One day I’ll really have to try this author! Everyone is loving her books!

    • Lorna is the one who got me on the series. I’ve really been enjoying it. I need to try her other series, Seven.

  9. I really can’t wait to read this one, Melanie, because I love Simon too. But I have to finish the Mageri series first and I’m on book 3. 😉 I’m happy Simon’s story was a good one!

    • It is a fun series. I think you will really enjoy the rest of it and Simon’s book too.

  10. Glad you got Simon’s story and that it was a good one, even if it was filled with heartache, sometimes those are the best ones though. 😉 Wonderful review!

  11. Huh.. never even heard of the author or the original series. I’m a big loser. This sounds good! Thanks!

    • I learned about this series from Lorna at Rabid Reads. She is a huge fan. This author/narrator combo has another series that everyone is raving about called Seven. I really want to pick it up to.

  12. I have this audio ARC, Melanie, so apart from just checking your 4 stars and that you enjoyed the narration, I didn’t read your review. I need to listen to this! I love Simon, too, he’s so much fun. His irreverence always makes me laugh 🙂
    I hope you’re having a great week!

    • You will love this story Lexxie. Simon is a lot of fun with his own story. 🙂

  13. Awwww, man! I’m so behind on the Mageri series! I’m afraid to start back up with book 4 b/c I’m afraid she won’t end up with Logan. I’m such a weenie!! But I absolutely LOVE Simon so I’ll just have to man-up b/c this sounds soooooo awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn, it’s been forever since I read this series… Awesome review!!! Thanks for the reminder!!! 🙂

    • I think you need to pick back up this series. If you read Simon’s story without having finished the series first, you will get spoilers.

  14. Is this a continuation of the Mageri series or is it a spin-off or standalone? I still have to read the first series where each book is a countdown from the previous. I know I’m behind lol.

    • It is both, truthfully. You can read it as a stand alone, but it will have spoilers for the main series. If you care about knowing who dies or who ends up as a couple, don’t read this one first. If you don’t mind those kind of spoilers, then go ahead and read this one, you won’t be lost (though I would start with book one).

  15. It’s always fun when one of your favorite characters in a series gets their own book :). It sounds like a good one with the suspense, paranormal and romance elements.

  16. Oh that sounds like a great set up. She’s on my authors to try list. I really need to make that happen!

    • This has been a really fun series and different from other urban fantasies that I’ve read. I love the way magic is used in this world. She also has another series I want to try called Seven. I’ve heard great things about it as well.
