This book has been a long time coming. For as long as I can remember, people have been asking Jeaniene Frost to write Ian’s book. Well, she has finally done just that. My biggest concern going into this book was, would it live up to the hype? I’ve found that many books that I wait a long time for, don’t live up to the wait. Luckily, that was not a issue here. I loved Ian’s book.
If you know me, you know I go into books pretty blind, if I can. So, I had no idea who the heroine of Ian’s story would be. Imagine my surprise when I see that it was Veritas. She’s been around for a while, but has always had short times on the pages, but they were very big part of the plot. She’s a Law Guardian. That means that everytime the vampires of the Cat & Bones world bent and pushed the rules, Veritas made an appearance which could mean life or death for the vampire in trouble.
Now, Veritas wants Ian’s help to deal with a demon that has been a thorne in her side for more than 4,000 years. She knows that Ian has a score to settle with same demon, so he would be the perfect vampire to help her. We also learn that Veritas has quite a few secrets that she’s been great at hiding even from the well connected Cat & Bones gang.
I don’t want to go into too much detail, because I hate spoilers. But suffice to say, this is a great start to a spinoff series. If you haven’t read the Night Huntress series (with Cat & Bones as the main characters) or Night Prince series (following Vlad and Leila) or any of the other Night Huntress World books, you can still read this series, though I think you will have more fun with the characters if you’ve read the entire series to this point.
Shades of Wicked Audiobook Narration

Tavia Gilbert is again the narrator for this series (she’s done all the Night Huntress World books to this point). It’s nice because she continues to get the voices consistent across all the different books. I love all the accents she chooses (of which there are a lot and vastly different). Ever since I listened the first book (which I can’t remember which was my first audiobook), I’ve been straight to audio for this world. If you haven’t tried Tavia Gilbert, you should totally give her a try.
Jeaniene Frost is the New York Times, USA Today, and international bestselling author of the Night Huntress series, the Night Prince series and the Broken Destiny series. To date, foreign rights for her novels have sold to twenty different countries. Jeaniene lives in North Carolina with her husband Matthew, who long ago accepted that she rarely cooks and always sleeps in on the weekends. Aside from writing, Jeaniene enjoys reading, poetry, watching movies with her husband, exploring old cemeteries, spelunking and traveling – by car. Airplanes, children, and cook books frighten her.

It’s been years since I haven’t read anyof her books
I really love thie world she’s created. The characters are so much fun too.
Yay! I was hoping this would be good. Great review, Melanie.
I’m always worried about books with a lot of hype (I’m the same way with movies too). This one lived up to the wait.
Glad you like it. I figured his girl had to be Veritas based on the last Vlad book. Is it told from her POV like the other two series? I didn’t pick this one up because I really ended up not liking the Vlad series. But I’ve wanted Ian’s story forever. I wish it was a standalone like Menchares or Ian… I’ll have to see what you think of the second book and then maybe I’ll try it! Great review.
Yes. it is. I would really like to get into his head though. Thanks
OOh this looks fab Melanie. Thanks for sharing your fantastic thoughts
It was a fun story. Thanks for stopping by.
I was already going to read this one, love Ian!!! but I didn’t know Tavia Gilbert was the narrator. I must have the audio now. 🙂
I love Tavia Gilbert. She’s so great at her narrations.
Oh this was supposed to be my next book, but something has come up and I have to put it off a bit. I’m so excited for Ian’s story! Thanks for no spoilers!
I think you’ll love it when you get to it.
Aye, it was a long time since I read anything by her
I really love her work.
It is nice to know that you can read this as a stand alone as it has been years since I read the Night Huntress series. Also happy that it was such a strong read for you.
I’ve really enjoyed Jeaniene Frost’s vampire books. The characters are just so much fun. 🙂
I use to love her work and then for whatever reason I stopped reading her books. I should definitely make a point of picking her back up again. I know I have numerous books still on my kindle from her vamp series.
I’ve done that with a few authors. I don’t know why. It isn’t that I didn’t enjoy their work. I think there is just too many great ones to keep up with them all. Which means, unfortunately, a few fall through the cracks.
I’ve only read a few of the Cat & Bones books..you have me super curious!
I’m a huge fan of Frost’s characters. They are so much fun. Ian is a favorite and this book only made me like him more.
I haven’t read the entire Night Huntress series but I do love her books. I might have to start this series at some point.
I really enjoy her books.
I loved this book and plan to grab a copy of the audio. Tavia Gilbert does such a good job with this group of characters. I am happy to see that you enjoyed this one as much as you did, Melanie!
Tavia does do a great job with these characters and oh the accents. SO many of them.
I’m so happy to see this was a great one. I’m only skimming since I have to catch up. I will. I still have all the Vlad books on audio and I love Vlad. Anne – Books of My Heart
I really liked Vlad’s book too. I’ve been waiting for Ian since way before Vlad. I’m so glad he finally got his book.
