The Dirt on Ninth Grave Audiobook

4.5 stars

In this story we have Charley waking up with retrograde amnesia. She doesn’t know who she is or anything about her past. It has been about a month and she is working in a diner in Sleepy Hollow, New York. All of her friends and family have joined her, but they haven’t told her they know who she is. Charley’s sister Gemma warned that it would be too hard on her to force the memories back on her. Charley needed to come back to herself in own time.

It was fun to see that Charley was “Charley” no matter what. It did take her a bit to figure out her powers. She wasn’t sure about the fact that she really could see dead people. She was also very scared to tell anyone about it, scared she would end up in a straight jacket, who wouldn’t?? Watching her learn how she stopped time and how to deal with it was kinda fun. I’m sure I would be the same way. In awe and terrified at the same time.

She also got the chance to fall in love with Reyes all over again. Who wouldn’t want that chance? She got to go through those wonderful times of early love all over again. It wasn’t all hearts and flowers at first. She did see the darkest in Reyes and it scared her. She also saw the anger in him, which is also scary.

Watching all of the secondary characters that we know and love tiptoe around Charley trying not to reveal who they are to her, all while Charley can sense their emotions was hilarious. Not to mention, she can tell when someone is outright lying. Garrett, Osh, Cookie, UB (or Bobert as Charley calls him while she doesn’t know him), Swoops are all there.  Angel even made the trip to keep an eye on Charley.

One thing I also enjoyed was the secondary characters we got to meet in this story. The fact that this took place in New York instead of New Mexico, means that we had to have a whole new cast of characters. There is Dixie the diner owner. There are the other diner workers in Lewis, Erin and Shayla.

Charley also works on two different cases that proves that she is a PI at heart. One that is police related and one that is departed related. She just can’t help but to help people who are in trouble. She also has a departed that she must help as well.  We also learn that animals can be departed too.

This is a classic Charley Davidson story. It will make you laugh and cry. Even though this story Charley spent most of the story as Janey Doerr, it was still a fun story.

The Dirt on Ninth Grave Narration

5 stars

Lorelei King once again nails the narration of this series. She had to do some Russian accents in this one. She continues to pull of the snark that is characteristic of a Charley Davidson book. Add to that, she is also great with the parts that are also not snarky. She brings to the table whatever is needed for that scene and does it flawlessly. This is will always be a straight to audio series for me. If you haven’t tried it on audio yet, you don’t know what you’re missing.

I’m Melanie and I live in Ohio. I have two horses and a dog. I’m an animal lover, avid book reader and audiobook listener. I like to live vicariously through fictional characters. I enjoy reading and listening to mostly fictional books in the paranormal genre, including Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Horror. My favorite paranormal creatures are shifters, doesn’t matter the flavor.

  1. I started it 🙂 I do like the opening! I grabbed hankies though I won’t get there today I don’t think.

    • This one really got to me a couple of time. So good though.

  2. I have not read this series Melanie but I have this book on my shelf. Should i start from book one or can I read this without loosing my mind?
Great review, I don’t know why I’ve never read her, too many books too little time right!

    • Yes, you must start at book one or you will be lost. This is a series that must be read in order. They are easy to keep track of order. First Grave, Second Grave, etc. LOL

      • Thanks Melanie and guess what I was just offered a chance to interview her. Stay tuned!!

  3. I enjoyed this one too 🙂 Great review 🙂

  4. I really enjoyed this one as well. I liked the tone down Charley, the setting, the new characters, and you are right it was epsecially fun to see everyone tip toeing around Charley. I usually listen to these, but I got the ARC so I read it instead. I love Lorelei King’s narration for this series.

    • It was nice not having to figure out which body part was being named. LOL. I’ve never read a Charley Davidson story. I started out listening. I picked it up because I loved Lorelei King’s narration of Mercy Thompson.

  5. Exciting, exciting! I’m looking forward to listening to this one on audio. Glad you enjoyed so much!

  6. Everyone reviewed this today so I have a template comment as I’ve yet to proceed with the series:

Maybe this s the year I’ll get to finally catch up. lol

P.S. Loupe! Where are you?!?! I miss your sexy ass!

    • Hahaha. That’s what happens on release day (or the day before release day). I hope you get a chance to catch up. I will say that waiting for this one was hard. Tenth Grave comes out later this year too.

    • Haha! I’m still around, just trying slowly to get back. I miss all of you guys too.

  7. Definitely looking forward to starting this series! Great review!

  8. Oh yes it was nice to have a book like that! It’s more a transition book but it’s fun to see Charley discover everything and to see her hypothesis.

    • I don’t always mind transitional books, as long as the story is still good. Also, there can’t be a bunch of them in the series, but one every now and then isn’t bad. This was a fun story. 🙂

  9. I loved this one to pieces! I thought Darynda tied up even more loose ends for me, especially with her [blank]. And I loved how Reyes admired Charley so much and told her that, it was like a third POV. Sorry if I’m not making sense, I’m trying not to spoil anything.

    Yeah, I gave this a 5 😉

    • I know this one is so hard to review and to comment on without spoiling. Books like this should be reviewed as “Read it, trust me.”

  10. Great review. I agree 100% This was my favorite of the series!

  11. I heard good things about this series! I am not a fan of amnesia plot lines in general, but it sounds done well in this book and how it shows the character still being herself even without her memories and discovering her powers again, that should make for an interesting plot. I might have to add this series to my to-read list. Great review!

    • It is a fun series. Lots of snark. Cookie is my favorite character. I was worried that she wouldn’t be in this book with Charley being in a different town, but she was still there. I hope you enjoy it if and when you try it.

  12. WANT SO MUCH! I have been doing this series on audio and can’t wait to do this one on audio as well. I LOVE that you enjoyed this one, but then again, I think at this point I would totally squee over a not so perfect book in the series. 😀

    • I’m a huge fan and was all “Squee” about it before I got it. It was everything I hoped it would be. I hope you enjoy it too. I’m now very excited for Tenth Grave.

    • It is a fun series full of snark. Reyes is very bad boy sexy. It is Cookie, Charley’s BFF, who I love the most, but I have a thing for secondary characters and sidekicks.

  13. I’m so far behind in this series, Melanie… so skimmed your review, but very happy about your high rating! I need to continue reading this 🙂
    I hope you’re having a fantastic week.

    • I know how it goes getting behind on series. My goal this year is to get caught up on a bunch of them. This is probably the best book in the series. I’m very excited to see where this series goes from here.

  14. Awesome review. This series is just so much fun! I can’t wait to get my ears on this:)

    • I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I so loved it. One of my favorite in the series. I can’t say if it is my all-time favorite without going back to relisten to all of them again, but it would be up there.

  15. I haven’t read this one but it sure sounds like one I would like.

    • Charley Davidson is a really fun series. Full of snark and a sexy dark hero. I hope you get a chance to try it.

  16. Omg, I LOVE this series and I’m looking forward to reading this one. I have it from NetGalley and I’m gearing up to read it in the next few days. One day I’ll get the audios though if only because I need incentive to get on the dreadmill. 😀

    • This is a great series to motivate one to get on a treadmill. It will make you laugh while you’re getting those steps in. I hope you enjoy it. It was probably my favorite in the series.

  17. I can’t wait to read the first book of the series now that I have it and yes, the reader sounds awfully good 🙂

  18. I have listen to the the others in the series and enjoyed them very much. I have been looking for this one for over a year on audio so I can see if it was as good as the rest. From the sample it’s sounds promising

    • I love Lorelei King. She does an amazing job with this series. I just finished 11th Grave this week. Another great addition to the series.
